I had a husband-wife combo of tech fans sitting by me and my father (38 and 59 years old, respectively). They were very obnoxious, but it was good natured. Their team was handing our butts to us and they were enjoying it as fans. After the game the husband came over and shook hands and told us to be careful heading out.
There were two vol fans sitting right next to us. Right before kickoff the guy gets up and leaves. At the end of the first quarter I go to the bathroom and there is a guy on all fours puking in the stall. When I got back to my seat I asked other folks if they knew they couple and they did. They said he drank too much and was passed out puking. He never came back.
I was in section 113. It was mostly VT fans but had no issues from them. I only noticed one who was drunk. The only closest thing I got in the form of smack talk was from him when he was making his way to his seat. He was excusing himself then got to me then said "I would say excuse me but you suck, youre from tennessee". The look of fail on his face was great when I told him I was from Virginia.
I'm having a tough time believing these stories considering all the articles and comments that get sent to our school for our sportsmanship and hospitality.
Response from Nebraska fans has Tech administration happy with Hokies Respect campaign

Well I didnt see a single attractive hokie co-ed, I would have been pissed too if my school had no hotties![]()
Is Va Tech the only school with fans so bad (to the extent that they have fans) that the administration had to launch a PR campaign to teach basic sportsmanship? I couldn't imagine Tennessee ever doing a "Vols Respect" campaign, because we don't need it. I've never heard of any school doing that, and it doesn't seem to be working for Va Tech. You can't really teach class, you either have it or you don't. Va Tech fans don't have it, and some PSA on the jumbotron isn't going to fix it. Once a trashy inbred hick, always a trashy inbred hick.
I'm just glad Tennessee has a much larger fanbase and outnumbered them 8 to 1. I can't imagine how awful they'd be if it were more evenly distributed.
I hate a drunkard. One reason I seldom have a drink anymore is it always seemed to boil down to me babysitting a drunk or drunks, men and women alike. I ran out of patience a long time ago with people who ruin everyone elses' time because they refuse to be responsible. Total jackasses! I have seen numerous UT fans at Neyland that fall into that category and UGA fans at Neyland as well.
The perceived obnoxiousness of the other team's fans is directly proportional to the butt whipping you're receiving.
The Tech fans were bad, but I still think the Clemson fans were worse the year we played them in the Chick Fil-A Bowl. One Tech fan was singing as we were leaving "Rocky Top you'll always be last in the SEC". Pretty obnoxious.
Give the Hokies a break...First of all "What is a Hokie"? Secondly...When your band has nothing better to offer than the "Hokie Pokie" during halftime...and lastly, most of them spend 16 hrs. a day in a coal mine and marry their cousin...I would drink heavily too and hope for a heavy punch to the forehead to end it all!
First of all...According to US News "Best Colleges 2010" Virginia Tech ranks 71st in the nation....where does UT fall? 106th, I doubt very many Hokies spend alot of time in a coal mine. As far as coal mining goes, whats wrong with it? Do you enjoy your electric heat during these cold winter months? What about the electricity you use to run your home? Well guess what none of that would be possible without coal miners. Also, the average coal miner makes $21.57 an hour that totals up to be approx. $45,000 a year, not to shabby if you ask me.
