On my long drive back from visiting my fiancee this weekend, I thought a lot about the game yesterday and this year's team. The bottomline is that we had no business competing with LSU. They are superior to us at every position. However, our guys absolutely went to war. Credit needs to go to the Staff for having us prepared and even more to the players for their effort. What we saw yesterday, gentleman, was a team and Staff that gave every ounce of energy that they had in winning that game. The inexperience showed, both in our players (offensive line) and in our Staff in the final play. But the takeaway from this is that this team has some serious heart and is a team that we should be proud of.

I'm also not nearly as down on the staff as some on here. The last play is on them, clearly. But I felt we outcoached LSU for 4 quarters, honestly. Though I'm certainly not claiming that Dooley's on his way to National Titles, the effort yesterday gives me hope for the future.

 I agree, with a lot of preparation and a little Les Miles magic we had a chance to win that game. Their overall talent is FAR superior to ours.

Exactly!! Spot on post, lawvol. It takes time...yesterday loss was gut wrenching, but there was definitely no lack of effort on ANYBODY'S part.

I was proud of them yesterday!!! GO VOLS!!

hahah go ahead.

Hatvol's new insult is "hallelujah chorus" and he is still going to the well for "sheep"

His position is that Dooley and Wilcox are terrible coaches. He broke his self imposed football ban to poke the bear that is hurting Vol fans. It is odd to watch...

When your greatest joy comes from watching the coaches and teams you claim to be a fan of get demolished you have to wonder what kind of a miserable loser in the game of life you are.

If TN ran off Mike Hamilton and Derek Dooley and hired Urban Meyer (a guy I cannot stand) I would root for them to win and I would not spend time denigrating the coach of the team I cheer for. When we lost I would be sad and not happy.

I'm positive about several things from yesterday's game. I'm not thrilled with Wilcox up to this point in the season though. That could all change if he somehow figures out how to scheme against a 3rd and 10+. I would almost rather see this team defend a 3rd or 4th and 2 than a 3rd or 4th and 10-15.

.

Hat's stated his position numerous times. He didn't agree with the Dooley hire and doesn't think he will be successful. He may very well be right. I just reserve my judgment until I see more play out. The LSU game, despite the end of game blunder, left me feeling better about our staff's ability to build something, but it's definitely still too early for me to say one way or other whether I think Dooley will ultimately succeed. He'll continue to get the benefit of the doubt from me this season.

This season? He will need 3 seasons to determine how he will "turn out." This is not Saban at Bama bringing in the #1 recruiting class and getting 150 players in 5 years. This is a team down 15 scholarships with a signing limit of 28 and a head coach who is very hard working but who has to convince kids who hear from rival coaches negative recruiting that:
1. He can win in the SEC and
2. That TN is headed towards greatness and they can play a key role in that on their way to NFL $$$$.

Wilcox does not have the horses to stop teams on 3rd and long.

I am glad we do not play Washington or Boise State this year because with our lack of pass rush they might score 70+ on us. South Carolina and Alabama should crush us, but we have a very strong chance of winning the rest of the games...

I enjoyed watching our guys, they played hard, caused turn overs, had few penalties, looked better on special teams. I was proud of our guys. It was not like the games under a former coach where we would win but we looked bad doing it. I think we have a great future to look forward to. I just hope I live long enough to see it.

If you watch the replay on the 4&9. Wilcox is bringing the house on the blitz but LSU has a delay of game penalty. So just like in basketball when a play is about to be inbounded you see how they line up and change it. So when they got the delay of game. Wilcox had to change the play.

I am like everyone else thou. I would have liked them to blitz everyone they could. If LSU scores the O. has time to get a FG or TD.

Could not agree more with the OP. I personally think we have a good coaching staff but are facing a very steep mountain to climb. Hope we give them the time they need. Let's face it, the past two coaches left this program in complete turmoil and these coaches want to be here. I cannot say that for many as it is not the ideal time to be a Vol coach. Time will tell.

I'm starting to come down from the ledge. I wanted to Donald Trump his ***. I now realize what a Herculean effort it was to even be in the game. I don't like touting moral victories but the kids fought their butts off for four quarters plus.

I think that after 5 games, most reasonable fans expected to be 2-3. I did not think that we would struggle with UAB, but we did and we won. LSU opened as a 16 pt. favorite, at Baton Rouge. We took them to the wire and had a freak mistake beat us. I cannot understand for the life of me some folks who want the team to fail, so the coaches and AD will be ran off. You're either a VOL FAN or your not. This team needs support, fans in the seats, it will get better, WE'RE TENNESSEE. Anybody that can't do that needs to go buy them an UGLY red hat with a white "A" on it. ITS GREAT TO BE A TENNESSEE VOL.

I liked the effort of everyone involved. The only thing I would have changed is better clock management when the offense had the ball. Better management and LSU would never have been in the position to win on the final play.

Listen here Vol fans. There is something I've been wanting to say on this board.

As a Texas alum and current citizen of Knoxville, TN. I have many, many (including my wife) friends that are UT graduates. When I first moved up here (1996) I hated it and I hated the Vols. Y'all were world beaters; we were happy to make it to the Sun Bowl. Things have changed a bit and that leads me to my point.

You will return. The road to the top is much, much more fun and exciting than the road back down. I know the current situation sucks and it's painful to watch the Vols struggle in certain areas and at certain times (UAB); however, I see many similarities between the current Vols and the 1998-ish Longhorns.

You've got a coach with total class. Give him time. He's cleaning up quite a mess (like Mack Brown in 1997). He runs a clean program. The recruits will come. As y'all struggle a bit this year and then get better next year and the year after, just enjoy the ride.

So, as someone who supports a team that has been near the top for a few years but is underachieving at the moment just let me say this again. It is far, far more fun to go up than down.

Good luck Vols. Enjoy the ride.

Yeah, Dooley is not walking into near the situation Saban walked into at Bama either. There was much more depth for Saban in his first season on the job. The same was true for Meyer at Florida.
