I haven't bought Madden in six years, but 2k5 is the most fluid football game I've ever played. Coincidentally, as overall packages I thought Madden and NCAA were at their best during the later part of the PS2/Xbox/GC gen as well.
With no competition the games are just stagnant.
NCAA 14 is actually pretty good. They ironed out a lot of the really glaring issues with previous versions. Namely psychic DBs/safeties that could intercept passes with their backs turned to the ball and linebackers that could jump 10 feet in the air and intercept passes over the middle.
The biggest remaining problem is defenders freezing in place on QB option runs. That has been an issue for a long time and they never fixed it.
And perhaps it's just because I suck, but I find dink-and-dunk passing offenses (like UT's) to be much, much more effective than true pro-style down field attacking offenses. There are 4-5 plays that you can rotate in the short passing game that are almost guaranteed to work, whereas going play action and throwing deep is much more difficult to pull off.
Any play that takes a couple of seconds to develop is also doomed to failure in many cases, even if you have an elite OL. Seems like a defender always gets through.
