Aeration and seeding time.

Whenever you are applying these products with a hand-held sprayer, is the aim to saturate the ground and grass or just get them covered?

For example, with the Dimension, I measured out for 1000 sq/ft with 2 gallons of water. If I spent anytime on one particular spot, the entire sprayer would be gone in no time.

However, if I sort of walked at a slow pace and just lightly covered the grass, I could almost make it the entire 1000.

I don't want to waste it by using too much or not do an effective job by using too little.

What is the goal with how wet to make the grass?

Spray till wet.

A slow pace with a medium droplet will get you the desired coverage. Thing is, with heartier weeds you need to apply it a little heavier to them to make sure you get a good kill. If not the weed will yellow up, then come right back. Don't be scared to spike it a little and you can put some cheap dish soap in the tank too. ( do it last). This will act as a glue and the chemical will stick better to the plant.

Also if you want, mix in a little nitrogen ( liquid) in the tank as well.

How important is aeration? We're moving into year 2 of owning our house and I would like to improve our yard this year. I dont really have any bare spots but I can tell I have 2 different types of grass.

Any tips on how to get one to overtake?

What are the grasses?

Aeration is more for over seeding than anything.

I would wait and aerate in the fall

Just curious, what is the product you are spraying?

So since I put down the crabgrass preventer/fertilizer down and the temps were pretty warm all week the grass is growing again. I'll easily be cutting it in a week.

I'm not even going to pretend to know. I just know that since half my lawn is green through winter and half is brown that I have cool and warm season grasses.

Both grasses look good. I just don't like the look together during spring/summer or winter.

Fescue and Bermuda I'd wager.

I don't blame you with not liking it. I hate the look myself.

The fescue ( which is green now) is it under trees or just scattered in patches throughout the yard?

Bermuda grass is spreading like wildfire over a lot of the lawns in the neighborhood here, mostly because people simply don't take care of their lawns. I even found a small patch in the backyard last year that was like maybe a foot wide by a foot and a half long. I never did spray it to kill it but crowding it out with aeration and overseeding seemed to do the trick.

Question? What is your opinion on zoysia plugs? I'm going to put down some sod after we are done building in the back yard but don't have the cash to carpet the whole 1 1/2 acres. So I thought I'd sod the area we tore up then plug the rest.

Any suggestions on where to buy/order the plugs from?

Best prices on Tennessee Sod | Nashville Sod | Sod Chattanooga | Palmer

Im pretty sure I sodded the meyer zoysia variety. Mine greens up about Mid-late April here in East Tennessee.

My wife got this crazy idea off pintrest to spray the yard with vinegar to kill the weeds. (did it without my knowledge) Granted I also sprayed weed be gone but dang her portion that she sprayed is really brown vs the weed be gone only.

Anyone ever spray vinegar on a yard? It hasnt killed the grass (yet), just the weeds. So I am impressed

Even if it works never admit it
The yard is the Mans domain

I've sprayed several products on my lawn back in the day when I was trying everything to get grass to grow for the first time, beer, ammonia, etc. Got those ideas from some crazy book. Not sure I ever used vinegar though. You should be very careful with vinegar as at higher concentrations it can kill grass. Plus she shouldn't be treating the lawn with any chemicals if you recently treated with Weed-B-Gon.

Tell her to get back in the kitchen. :)

is your sod going to be zoysia ? if it is just let it get established this year and then make your own plugs,it shouldn't be hard to find the plugs,I would look to be planting them late summer, just be sure and keep em watered

I haven't heard of that but there are two household items with many uses, vinegar and baking soda. if it works it is a money saver.

This or make your own plugs from the sod squares. Thats what I did and it worked really well.

that is a very good idea jp1, there is no telling how many plugs you can make from a sod square,I just got mine growing from a couple of buckets full :)

and just how big is a sod square ? I'm just interested in knowing

It can vary depending on the company but usually 16"x24" or 18"x24". So technically not a square.

I put down crabgrass preventer/fertilizer in my sisters yard exactly a week after I put it in my yard and mine is very green. Given that and the warmer temps her yard still has barely greened(mostly dormant still). Could that be the difference between having winterized my yard and not hers this past fall or is something else going on?

For what it's worth the majority of the lawns in her neighborhood are consistent with this. Also most of the lawns were sodded as far as I know, her's for sure. Not sure if it being sod makes a difference after a certain point.

384 square inches ,the small size, that means you can cut out a crap load of plugs, spread em out about a foot apart and keep em watered well the first year

then start busting them apart after they have started growing good ,if you want to do it cheaply, takes time, but once it gets established,it grows pretty fast
