Advice on Knoxville

There is a very long thread about Knoxville restaurants. You may want to take a look at it.

http://www.volnation.com/forum/pub/192671-knoxville-restaurants.html

If you don't stay downtown I would recommend the west end somewhere between Cedar Bluff and Lovell Rd. There are also several good restaurants in that area.

As others said get to the stadium early game day catch the volwalk and the band marching in.

Have a safe trip and enjoy Knoxville

I've always thought mexican food east of Texas lacked. We have pretty good Mexican here. Maybe i'll try it.

Get yourself to a tailgate. Many posters get together. You are an appreciated member of VN even though you are a fan of USU. You will be ribbed but treated hospitably.

One of my friends started for the UCLA team that came into Knoxville in 2009. His family raved about how they were treated and are a big reason why I'm coming. I like some ribbing as long as I can dish it back. :)

Don't think you'll find any Mexican food here that compares to Utah or So Cal. I haven't. Most of the other places mentioned already are pretty good fare. If you can spare the time and money, I would arrive on Friday. That will give you time to get your bearings and check out a few places. Also, will give you time to enjoy the fireworks display on the River.

Calhouns on the river is great. I also like Copper Cellar on the strip. I always park on lake avenue at a little daycare. They charge like $25 to park but it's a good spot to tailgate and a short walk to the stadium. Usually a frat or two around there has a porta potty around that they accept donations to use. Enjoy your trip! GO BIG ORANGE!!

Personally, I like staying east of Knoxville vs west, if you're not staying downtown.

Traffic is a little better before the game and much better after the game. I recommend staying somewhere off of Strawberry Plains Pike, exit 398 if you don't stay near campus or downtown.

The Hilton Garden Inn Knoxville/University is a great Hotel. I stayed for the Vandy game last year, beside the final score, I had a great experience. I was a little put off at first becuase you can't park your own car on their property, you have to valet but they do have limited parking. It's probably the closest hotel to the stadium and the staff is really really good at their jobs. Trust me, when I go back i'm staying there. They're not expensive either. Check em out soon. I'm sure they'll book quick.

It is already booked, as are all of the hotels within walking distance of the stadium. Ya'll know how to support your Vols!

Those are all some great places to eat in K-ville. My suggestion to you is to walk around all the tailgates, walk up and down the river where the Vol Navy boats are docked. Tennessee fans are usually pretty awesome to opposition fans who aren't jerks. Be friendly, introduce yourself, socialize... I bet you end up with all the free food and beer your heart will desire.

This. Forget trying to fight through the restaurants (except for Littons). Get out and enjoy the town and atmosphere that only Rocky Top and Neyland can provide. It's still months away, but welcome to Knoxville!

A month and a half away actually! I'm sorry but I'm just getting stupid excited as every day passes by!

Have fun in Knoxville martigan! I'm pretty sure you are going to have a great time. I would offer some advice but I'm not a Knoxville vet like a lot of others here. I'll be at more games this year than I have ever been to in previous years. So I'm hoping to get it figured out also. :salute:

Not to discount any advice offered here. I agree with many of the suggestions. I would also yelp it if you're familiar with the app.

I wouldn't go to to East Tennessee to eat Mexican food. I would suggest Calhoun's on the river just for some local atmosphere and pretty good food. I would go there the day before the game. You can check out the Vol Navy and hang out with some good folks. On game day you should have no trouble finding accommodating fans to tailgate and talk football with. Get to the stadium early for the pre-game festivities. You could check out the Vol walk just to say you witnessed it but as an opposing fan that may be a little much for you.

If you stay downtown and want a casual meal, Barley's. I'm not a big Calhoun's fan, there ribs are dry IMO. On gameday I'd get to Cumberland Ave early, there's quite a few lots just off the strip if your lookin to set up and tailgate.

Stock and Barrel has the best burger that I've had in Knoxville. Suttree's has the best craft beer if you are into that, and if you are looking for good comfort food Tupelo Honey is pretty damn good.

I know you said you want to stay downtown, however you cannot go wrong staying in pigeon forge. It's about 45 minutes from the stadium, however it's a great spot to spend a weekend and get the full smokey mountain experience.

We set up our tailgate right across the street from the main entrance into Neyland Stadium - Big Ed's Tailgate - stop by as we will have lots of food and beer. Good ole Tennessee boys (and their girls) who love some UT football. GO VOLS!!!

I would try to stay at Hampton Inn & Suites.

Don't go to Calhouns for the food. OVERRATED. The view/scenery is awesome.
Ruth Chris is great food with the same view but your dinner will be $150 for 2 people.
Market Square has great food options for reasonable prices, but no river view.

Wander around to tailgate spots on top of G10 parking garage. Very friendly people.

Catch the Vol Walk. It is crazy. Happens 90 minutes before kickoff.

Make sure to watch Pride of the Southland Marching Band, form the T & team runs out. Best entrance in College Football.

Most importantly, Have a Blast & Watch the Vols get the W...

I cant wait 46 days....

I get my BBQ on game day from vendors set up across Manning Pass from the Torchbearer statue at circle park. One of them is run by the third generation of the family who are selling real East Tenn BBQ'd ribs the way their grand daddy made it. Mmmmm. Eat that before the Vol Walk down Peyton Manning Pass. Get there soon enough to get a shady spot on the wall where the checker board is in the road. The cheer leaders set up there & when they're done, if you ain't ready for sum football, you never will be.

Then ... eat some more from a different vendor because they are all good, and get down to the end of Manning Pass on the corner just across from Gate 21 (where "Will Call" is & they'll have a free schedule of times for the days events).
There on the corner is where The Pride will set up after marching down "The Pass" to perform Salute to the Hill. Half the band on Philip Fulmer Way & half on Peyton Manning Pass, and the majorettes right there in front of you, and you smack dab in the middle of a sea of orange as far as you can see. whew! nuthin like it anywhere!

After that, mosey over to the outdoor theater by Alumni Hall an listen to live radio VOL Calls for a bit, but get into your seats a little more than 1/2 hour early to watch warm ups, pre game stuff, The Pride's pregame show, surely they will have a short memorial for Bobby Denton our life long game day announcer, "Ladies & Gennulmen! ... Pay these prices and PLEASE PAY NO MORE" (started when vendors tried to rip off fans by charging more than posted prices), The Pride forms the Power T and "IT'S FOOTBALL TIME IN TENNESEEEEEE!

FYI, Pete's is great but the last time I went there it is cash only. But they have an ATM inside the diner.
