If Schofield keeps playing like this the rest of the season, he could make the SEC First Team along with Punter.

Admiral Schofield seizing moment for Tennessee Vols basketball

After arriving this summer tipping the scales at approximately 260 pounds, Schofield seemed to ace the eyeball test. According to first-year Vols coach Rick Barnes, though, he failed it. Barnes told him the two wouldn’t even talk about basketball until Schofield looked more like a basketball player than a football player.

Schofield, a former star at Zion-Benton High School in the Chicago suburb of Zion, Ill., took those comments to heart because he said he could tell Barnes was 100 percent serious. He started running more — a lot more — and he drastically changed his diet.

A lot of salad and a lot of grilled chicken,” he said. “Fortunately I love a good salad. I just had to be careful with the dressing and other bad stuff.”

Schofield also stretched so much with strength coach Garrett Medenwald that his wing span became four to five inches longer. That’s how muscular and wound up he was the day he arrived in Knoxville.

“I mean, turn around and look at him. He’s huge,” Tennessee senior point guard Kevin Punter told GoVols247 after Wednesday’s win over the Gators.

Natural size and athleticism give Schofield natural advantages, but his attitude and work ethic have left an even bigger impression on coaches and teammates.

If anyone in the program is surprised by Schofield’s success — he scored 16 points at then-18th-ranked Butler in his first career start — they’re really good at hiding it.

He's been the biggest surprise this season, a lot of posters on here didn't think he'd play much this year. Makes me wonder if he was a hidden gem all along or if Rick has found the perfect role for him.

He has definitely surprised. I thought he would be a non factor this year.

I posted it in the Shembari thread, but I think using Admiral as a SF/point forward instead of strictly a PF has made a world of difference. It has allowed him the freedom to use entire skill-set that I saw from his high school tape. He is a versatile Armani-type player who could probably play all 5 positions with some level of success. I think he is further along as a freshman than Armani was at the time. That is a big compliment.

Long-time reader and first time poster here....

Schofield was just named SEC Freshman of the Week! He's got a great shooting stroke and he uses his strength to get separation for the post moves...a truly lethal combination. Great find by Tyndall and great coaching-up by Barnes. Really looking forward to seeing his career unfold. Go Vols!

I agree. Barnes giving him minutes at the peremeter has allowed 3 things to happen that I've been really impressed by. 1. He runs the baseline well and knows how to get good inside looks, 2. He's a good passer and good at finding an open man down low and 3. He's shockingly good at handling the basketball when the defender applies pressure.

I like having him in the flex because it allows us to see him in the low post AND in the peremeter because his skill set is so versatile.

Agree 100% about being further along than Armani was as a freshman, I think he's further along than Armani was as a sophomore too.

I'm really happy that he is playing well. He has had a high motor since at least 9 years old, at least that's when I first met him. lol. Great family, and you can bet that he will put forth the effort and max out his ability. I could easily see this kid doing a Gates and playing football at some point. That's if HE wants too. His brother aint too shabby on the football field.

What position does his brother play? Should Butch be recruiting him?
