Why would you make a hall of fame WR and current WR coach in the NFL move to DB coach?Lofton has no experience on the defensive side of the ball. He would be WR coach if he came.

Darren Perry is the name to watch for the DB coaching job.

I would agree with Perry, Lane was the one who hired him in Oakland for that position so it would make sense for a possible hire just not sure about the money.

I know there was some talk earlier about Joe Whitt Jr. I think he would be the best we could get. The guy is a hell of a football coach if you look at what he did at Louisville and now with the packers. Also I think he can recruit with just about anyone in the country. He had Louisville getting top 20 classes as their RC. But I haven't heard his name in awhile.

I don't know much about Perry. He doesn't have any college coaching or recruiting experience. So I am not sold on him yet. But we will see. I think Monte will have alot to say about who we hire on the D side.

Perry is a solid coach... I am like you though...don't know how he can recruit.

But then again if we get the likes of Coach O, and with Monte, I could sell the program on a recruiting visit.

cant see Norton or Lofton coming to Tennessee. just wont happen. Also, the jury is still waaaaay out on what type of recruiter Monte will be. yes, he has the rep, but can he relate to and build relationships with 17 and 18 year old kids?

Bingo, You have to have great recruiters on your staff, but at some point you have to make sure you have your bases covered with the best coaches you can get. If coach O is on board, plus what we already have, we have put together a solid recruiting staff now.

Lofton won't be a Vol. He is a Davis guy at Oakland. Never was a Kiffin guy. Perry seems to be a good name for DBs.

What kind of evidence was out there that Weiss could recruit? None, but the fact that he has NFL rings and coordinator experience from the league is enough for him to land top classes every year. Just because Monte is old doesn't mean that kids won't want to play for him.

Exactly...but I also believe a lot of people are selling Monte short because of his age. The man at the age of 68 puts in more hours than most people over half his age. He is a tireless worker and a tremendous competitor. I bet he hits up a few houses to talk to mom and dad during his tenure on the Hill.

His name alone is enough to get them to come...but if he invests time to go bust his butt recruiting...we may have to start fending off high school kids trying to get to Knoxville.

I wouldn't start counting players just yet. There are still some pretty good recruiters in the SEC. I know on paper it looks like it is going to be very good.

Also I wasn't saying Perry wouldn't be a good coach. I was just asking what happened to Joe Whitt Jr. He seemed like a good fit.

Nothing really happened to Whitt. I'm just not sure that Kiffin has even talked to him. He has talked to Perry to gauge interest. Monte and Whitt Sr coached together, so there is a connection.

I was just saying that if a recruit, especially one on the defensive side of the ball, is serious when he says he wants to play in the NFL...would be crazy not to have UT on the top of their list.

Hopefully, Kiffin cleans house and gets rid of all these coaches, who couldn't even get a winning season!

People talking about Monte's age need to consider that Paterno and Bowden are still pulling in talent and Mickey Andrews has to be at least Monte's age.

The thing I like about this transition is that we now will have coaches that can recruit and develop talent. Developing talent has been missing in this program for many years.

When I think of the role of the middle line backer in Monte's defense I have to wonder if we see someone who finally knows how to use a talent like Chris Donald. He looks like a natural fit for middle linebacker with the speed he has.

Bias is out the window now, everyone has a chance to take a spot.

Competition a building block for success.

I don't know about that. I could probably pull in some decent recruiting classes just because it's ND.

This kid has me really pumped for the 09 season. I naturally holler for an underdog but I'm really hopin this season he blooms. It's a perfect environment for a underclassman to excell with a new coach, new staff. If a 19 jersey is available I'm so gettin one.
