Adidas Contract with Vols

I don't really care what they wear personally but the last poster was right about kids actually choosing schools due to being sponsored by Nike. Not to mention, look at what Nike is doing for Oregon. Their facilities are ridiculous. They also use a bunch of different jerseys which a lot of kids like. I guess it's cool that they do that but I wouldn't want Tennessee do to that because of their tradition. I like the classic look. Some of the newer jerseys they have worn are kind of ugly. The all orange is hard to look at. I think it was smart for Oregon to do it because they didn't really have many traditions until now. I think the combination of jerseys has helped give them recognition and now it is their tradition. Yeah, kind of off topic there. I am pretty sure Nike played a role in them wearing all of those combinations though.

You do realize that a Nike Executive is the one who gave ALL of that money to them. Nike is based out of Oregon. They aren't going to come to TN and do the same thing they did in Oregon, period. I agree that Adidas seems a bit outdated, but don't expect the Vols to be walking around with diamond-plate on their shoulder pads anytime soon.

An extension with adidas will be announced soon.

good I always liked their stuff.

And if the best recruiting staff in the biz thinks Adidas is good enough then there must be a reason

It just blows my mind honestly. It never even occurred to me that so much stock was put into what freaking name brand your gear is! The concept of losing recruits because of the name on your equipment never entered my mind before this thread!

A few years ago at the school I was coaching, a bunch of athletic tape went missing. Turns out it ended up in the locker room, where kids who wouldn't see the field for JV were sitting there on Friday nights taping up their fingers and putting on those goofy armbands in anticipation of some serious varsity playing time.

I'm not sure at what point football became more of a fashion show all the way down to the high school level.

What makes you say that the school gives up control of their design? I know for a fact that this is not the case for a MAJOR college basketball team in the town that I live, that is associated w/ Nike. It was my understanding that maybe Nike or adidas will show different ideas for uniforms but the the final decision comes down to the coaches and AD.

I agree. There's no way in hell Nike has control like that. Maybe over some Sun Belt team, but not at a big school.

Why hasn't Nike changed Penn State's unis? Or Ohio State's? What about USC's? Such an invalid point. That adidas gear just has got to go.

It happened to two Big Ten schools, one of whom no longer uses Nike as a result. I'll give you a hint: they're rivals who usually compete for the conference title.

Nike originally rolled out their "Revolution" line a few years back. You may remember these as the ones where Miami, Virginia Tech, and Florida all had a dark uniform with one sleeve of the secondary color. They wanted to do the same thing with Michigan and Ohio State and were going to go to court to enforce the contract. In the end, Michigan agreed to allow yellow trim on their dark jerseys and Ohio State agreed to allow the sleeve striping to be changed.

And if you'd been living up here and had the chance to read the letters to the sports editor section of the Columbus Dispatch, you'd have thought that Bo Schembechler had exhumed Woody Hayes' remains and urinated on them.

That really sucks. Where did you hear this?

I agree, while I really don't think it matters all that much in football it is absolutely killing us in basketball when it comes to recruiting. The big time players like Nike gear and love to go to the Nike camps and they are held at Nike schools and when they become 1st rd. draft picks they sign multi dollar Nike contracts!

You may think it sucks, but it is a very, very good deal for Tennessee and its programs. It is far above, money-wise and support-wise than what any other company is willing to offer.

And that is all that matters. The quality of the equipment is the same, even if fan preference is subjective. Truth be told, 99% of all of the non-footwear gear is probably made in the same factories from the same materials, regardless of brand.

From my understanding, Adidas works well with the staff in all sports, from football to golf. They know the school and its needs. If their package is as lucrative or better than anyone else's, they are going to keep UT, and they should. They have been a good partner for UT athletics for over a decade, and I expect that the school will take that into consideration when it is time to re-up. It would be bad business not to do so.

i agree, i think nike jerseys tend to look a lot better than addidas jerseys, even when the jerseys are extremely simple like ut's.

i've heard, however, that the deal nike offerered wasn't even close to the deal that addidas offered. i'm pretty sure someone "in the know" posted not too long ago that nike did not consider ut a top tier program, therefore did not offer the kind of incentives that say a usc get. addidas, however, does consider ut a top tier program and provides the incentives that ut feels they deserve. what these incentives are, i have no idea.

Considering they would be sponsoring all of our teams, I don't know how we wouldn't be considered in the top 5 athletic programs in the nation. Men's basketball goes to the tournament every year now, Lady's always in the hunt for another NC, and then of course you have football. Who else has that much success with their sports? (besides florida- it pains me to say that)

Stop it, You sound ridiculous...Very few players get nike contracts in the pros...If nike was such a big deal then Alabama would have a great basketball program...Adidas takes care of UT.

According to the Director's Cup standings for last year, UT is tied for the 77th best athletic program in the country.

Got to say all the Adidas gear I have bought recently of the Vols have been awesome. Feels great and looks better.

I love the style too, and I know that they do an awesome job of taking care of all of our athletes' gear needs, including the income-draining sports. None of the brands out-perform the others cuz it's all the same tech. I like staying with adidas unless they give us a reason not too. Also, nike sucks

The jersey's this year are looking good to me. I hope they keep the Adidas contract. Just saw that Kiffin is getting a real good money from it.

not only do i want the swoosh on the jersey, but i also want the "TW" i mean why not... obviously we will be good if we wear Tiger's brand!

I agree I think its time we switch to Nike like 95 percent of the "successful" college football teams. For anysport for that matter. Nike is the more profitable. Most of the big time athletes that have made it to the professional level are sponsered by Nike. When you turn on the TV what do you see? I see a Nike commercial with Adrian Peterson. I see Lebron James commercials being sponsered by Nike too. What im saying is thats what these recruits and kids of today see and they strive to be just like the big time athletes..apparrel included.
