Adidas Contract with Vols

just curious, where has CLK ever said he wants Nike? I've never read that and bashing your current sponsor doesn't sound like a very smart thing to do

I don't think it was ever really public...It could have been a rumor around campus, so I guess that ruins that post; however it is pretty well know if you ask most of the players how they feel about the adidas gear they will tell you the cleats are too heavy and most just prefer the nike gear.

I hope Adidas sticks around because some of the schools they represent seem to stick with tradition and not crumble to the demands of the weekly fad (blackouts, eccentric designs, etc.).

Besides Tennessee, Adidas also sponsors UCLA, Nebraska, Michigan, Kansas, Arkansas, Indiana, Louisville, Mississippi St., Notre Dame, Texas A&M and NC State.

That might not be the greatest list of NCAA teams but Adidas is obviously a big part of college athletics. I just think it's silly to say Tennessee is at a disadvantage because they don't use Nike or someone else.

What would Nike or Under Armour do to the jerseys that would make them that much better? As far as recruiting, I think the staff has proved that Adidas is not hurting them at all.

It's probably been mentioned, but just wanted to throw my two cents in. To me it's not really about what they'll do to our uniforms. Our uniforms aren't changing, sans the little things like adding or taking away the stripes on the pants, or tweaking the thickness of the helmet stripe. Nike brings the possibility of summer camps that all the elite high school athletes go to. That's a free look at the school for these kids vs. us having to throw our own junior day. And like it has been mentioned, kids these days are looking at the brand the school wears, although I think that is still mainly a basketball thing right now. Its obviously a money thing and as it was said, Nike doesn't consider us a top school like Adidas does. My personal preference is for Nike, I think the stuff the offer for fans is better than that of Adidas, but I'd rather have them mainly for the benefits other than apparel/uniforms.

Also not 100% sure since I graduated and I'm not really around the basketball team anymore, but I know they had some major problems with the basketball shoes for a while there. The adidas shoes were constantly coming apart and having "blow outs" during practices/games. Not saying Nike's dont do that, b/c I haven't been around practices/teams that use them regularly.

We need to get back to NIKE if for nothing else but for Hoops. We will keep losing studs like Selby in the future if we stick with adidas. If Under Armour had any presence whatsoever in Hoops then I would be 100% all for them but since they do not, it has got to be NIKE.

Selby can lick 'em for all I care. If you are gonna decommit because of a brand, that's pretty stupid IMO. You go to a school because of what it can provide you and because you want to win. He's just worried about what comes next and wouldnt have been a good asset anyway.

Man it's not just Selby. Ever heard of Sonny Vaccaro and his influence on AAU basketball? Most of the good AAU teams have contracts with the shoe companies, it starts there. People like World Wide Wes don't help the situation either(obviously).

Then your wife must not be at Michigan anymore, because they dumped Nike for adidas before last season.

adidas offers things that Nike does not. The biggest, most important thing is that adidas has a full-time employee that works on-campus and only for your school. They handle all of the ordering with the coaches, they are there to handle the problems that come up from time to time. They can make emergency orders. They're on-call and in-town 24/7.

Nike offers you a rep that you share with a couple of other schools and is based in a central location. That's worth a ton right there.

adidas also considers Tennessee to be a top-tier school in their world of collegiate schools. We receive everything that Notre Dame, Michigan, UCLA, and Nebraska receive. They make us a priority, Nike indicated in the last bidding process in 2004 that they would not. Nike offered a "B-level" contract, where the money was around the same amount as adidas, but the amount of product was far less, meaning we'd have to spend a chunk of that money on additional product.

Another area where adidas is superior is in uniform design. When a school signs with Nike, they give up control of the design of their uniforms. Nike has elected to keep some schools traditional, and they've gone the other way with others. Football designs have school input, but for the other sports, you pretty much get whatever template Nike is using that year. With adidas, the school and coach get to preview the designs a year in advance and make changes.

For those of you that say the adidas uniforms look "cheap" or "K-Mart," I hate to break it to you, but the adidas uniforms are made by Ripon, the same company that manufactures NFL on-field jerseys for Reebok. What we wear on field on Saturdays are the same materials and made in the same factory as what is worn on Sunday in the pros. Uniforms don't get any better than Ripon, anyone that knows anything about football and basketball jerseys will tell you that. They've manufactured the majority of NFL on-field jerseys since they were known as Sand-Knit in the 60's. They're good enough that when Reebok signed their NFL deal in 2002, the stipulation was that they had to get their on-field unis from Ripon.

Brilliant post!! :good!:

I just don't like the designs of Adidas. My wife went to Southern Miss, Nike AND Under Armour do theirs.

I would love to see some orange/white Under Armour stuff.

Meet our Rep by chance at a local resturant with my kid (12) in March. We were watching the NCAA tourney and talking UT basketball Thursday afternoon eating wings, after small chit chat, he gave us two tourney passes for the 1st and 2nd round in Dayton. Really good dude.

I dont mind Adidas but IMO if we switch to NIKE gear that may be what it takes to bring in the Orange and Black!!

Just ordered a boatload of the new adidas sideline gear and it can't get here fast enough. I think their stuff is sharp - especially those new practice unis. I wish those were for sale.

What makes you say that the school gives up control of their design? I know for a fact that this is not the case for a MAJOR college basketball team in the town that I live, that is associated w/ Nike. It was my understanding that maybe Nike or adidas will show different ideas for uniforms but the the final decision comes down to the coaches and AD.

best teams have nike

Nike is not the best. You are looking at it incorrectly. Nike chased down these schools, not the other way around. Tiger Woods wins with the inferior Nike products on the tour because Nike pays him. Nike wants to be on the winners, not the winners wanting Nike.

bolded portion is absurd. The guy uses hand ground forged irons, lower COR woods by design, hand made wedges from the tour trailer and a Cameron hand made putter. He's not even close to using inferior equipment. If anything, he's using his own and allowing Nike to stamp it.

actually tiger has it in his contract he plays with whatever he wants...if nike's product sucks and he doesnt want to use it..he doesn't have to...they were talking about that on the sports animal two days ago

I agree. There's no way in hell Nike has control like that. Maybe over some Sun Belt team, but not at a big school.

Adidas has a negative stigma in football. Personally, I love my Superstars, but UT should go another direction.

Why hasn't Nike changed Penn State's unis? Or Ohio State's? What about USC's? Such an invalid point. That adidas gear just has got to go.

LD....i've seen a lot of similar posts from you, but have not ever seen a good reason (or any reason) why you think that?

Oh it's not just from me looking at the gear. I've worn both brands and Nike is more comfortable, fits better, feels better and the cleats are worlds apart. Also adidas gear seems to feel a bit heavy. Maybe it's just me but that what I've gotten from a few of my buddies who've worn both brands too.
