I can sympathize with CPF to an extent. Many times I have been blamed for arresting someone's kid. But I did have the law to fall back on. Kind of takes the pressure off!

Do the service academies have these issues? what about BYU? just curious.........
not that i know of, but i haven't seen a service academy or BYU in a national title or BCS game lately either......

you take the good, you take the bad..........and hope like hell it works out in the end.:)

Just wondering what disciplinary model they follow. Maybe we could borrow from them.

if you want UT to discipline like the service academies then we'd better apply for membership in the WAC asap

Take it from someone that has taught at a Service Academy. Discipline does not start on the Football field, it starts when they enter the gates or better yet when they sign their contract to enter the school. You cannot do this at a College other than a Military oriented School where there are so many restrictions and rules.

Example would be a DUI. Not only would you lose a scholarship you would also lose officer Candidacy with a 4 to 6 year obligation to serve in the military (as an enlisted Soldier) and then be possibility forced to pay for expenses accrued to date.

But in the past, I have always thought Phil did everything he could to try to help these kids get on the right track.
While trying to help a kid who's made a mistake right his life is admirable, doing it at the expense of the University's reputation and the football team's cohesiveness is not. I think Fulmer has in the recent past been unable to admit some individuals (particularly starters) are just trouble makers and need to be cut. He is responsible for a football program, not a reform school or 12 step program.

But they know that going in...right? Thats my point! I don't want or expect that type of discipline. What I would like is something more than the "lets see what we can get away with" approach our players seem to be taking. Lay down some ground rules...live by them and at the end of the day it falls completely on the player and the coach is only the enforcer. Just my two cents.

I certainly admit that your position is reasonable. I can honestly see it both ways, but I think I ultimately come out more or less where you are... which I think I said in my post.

I just imagine that it is tougher to do Phil's job without the benefit of hindsight, so I've been willing to cut him some slack. You just can't know what these kids are saying to him behind closed doors...

Just checked and the lead article has been changed and there is no link to the article either...Maybe CBS realized what a piece of garbage this was....

Big fan of the caps button are we?

probably a thread about this already but if not you may want to post a link to what you're talking about. Welcome to the board :hi:

Quotes from the article.....

Tennessee is the Microsoft of runaway programs.

The motto of the Tennessee football program: If the players commit, Fulmer will acquit.

Again, the transgressions listed are all solely from this year. Fulmer's track record in this area is extensive. He leaves a trail of player arrests, DUIs and serious crimes in his ample wake yet suffers no significant penalty for running the 21st-century version of The Mean Machine.

can't imagine what it takes for Fulmer to toss someone off the team. A meeting with the Taliban? Eating someone's liver with fava beans?

boy, arent you proud of our program?

These are the irresponsible, unintelligent sports writers who should be banished from our country. They spew word vomit all over the place with no basis of fact and complete bias. This idiot doesn't know anything about our program, he needs to chill out.

this is what he knows about our program....

On Jan. 21: Campus police arrest freshman tailback Daryl Vereen for public intoxication and underage consumption after responding to a call of a fight in progress outside an on-campus residence hall.
On Jan. 26: Police arrest All-SEC lineman Anthony Parker for disorderly conduct at an off-campus apartment complex, the paper says.
Public intoxication, drunkenness, and fights seem to be a main theme when it comes to rules breakers in the Tennessee program. If only the Volunteers had that kind of fight in them when they played Florida.
Feb. 2: A walk-on defensive back, Vince Faison, was arrested for DUI after police found Faison passed out behind the wheel of his truck in the parking lot of an on-campus fast-food restaurant with the engine running, the paper wrote, and his foot on the brake pedal with the vehicle in gear.
Well, hell, who hasn't passed out after gorging on too many burgers and fries?
So judgmental, you people.
Feb. 13: Fulmer dismisses two players, the paper reports, for an undisclosed violation of team rules. Both players were arrested within the past 18 months.
I can't imagine what it takes for Fulmer to toss someone off the team. A meeting with the Taliban? Eating someone's liver with fava beans?
Feb. 17: Police arrest the Vols' punter for DUI and leaving the scene of an accident after he allegedly struck a parked car causing more than $400 in damage.
The punter allegedly bolted from the accident. Who says punters aren't real athletes?

He's still a tool and I don't appreciate what he has to say. Is that ok? Thanks for the reminder of our problems. I'm one of those people who doesn't think that all these things are Fulmer's fault (although I have wanted him gone for awhile). Kids will be kids, and we have had a bad month. Don't even act like these problems aren't going on everywhere else, we are just dumb enough to get caught or not cover it up before it gets to the media. I really don't think it's any of our business to judge these players that none of you know anything about (well the majority at least).
I mean everyone whines about winning all the time, but the truth is the best athletes coming out of high school these days are obsessed with the gangsta mentality.
So you can't have your cake and eat it too.
Do you want to compete for championships and have a FEW off the field problems, or have a team of all saints that make Vanderbilt look like the New England Patriots? It just can't happen both ways these days.

"we just had a bad month"?????????????????????
