Active Shooter Training at Work

Why even "Train" if there isn't anything else to do? It seems to me this "training" is natural human reaction (for most).

The drills are pointless, to me anyway.

"Is that a shooter? Let me resort to my training. We've drilled for this, I'm ready."

Just doesn't seem legit. Haha
I want them to get out of the way before the intruder realizes they are gone. Then I want them to get into another secure building and put as many locked doors bergen them and the shooter. We have silent alarms and coded announcements to alert everyone as soon as we see a problem. I don't want them hiding under desks and being easy targets.

that's how our training works. We wind up behind 3 separate card coded access points. Most people only have access to certain points, so it all depends on where the shooter steals his card from I guess.

Yeah, let's let joes have guns in the barracks, brilliant.

We released the company at 4 on a Friday. I had staff duty. I completed my checks and told the staff duty NCOIC I would be back around 1 to check on the boys, but to call me if he needed anything. Got to my apartment at about 5 to find my girlfriend (now wife) had driven in from Knoxville to surprise me.

530 phone rings. "Hey sir, it's SGT Ferry. We've had an incident."
"What happened?"
"PFC so and so was at the off post pistol range and shot his own hand."
"I'll be there in fifteen minutes."

Long story short, worst weekend with my wife ever as I had a DUI that night as well. But yes, let's let the guys have weapons in the barracks

Yeah I'm screwed. I'm in a little building and there's really no place to go. Haha

My question is legit. I'm the security manager at a vaccines plant. We've done a lot of planning, training and hardening of entry points at our site. We train the run, hide, fight methodology, but if there are betterrible ideas out there, I'm all ears.

York,

If your question is strictly addressing the “work place shooter” scenario, then it seems that you have taken the correct initial steps to educate and prepare your staff. My next step would be to understand potential scenarios, identify risks and actual threat levels. Once I had this information, I would need to educate and coordinate with our operational management teams. This would be an ongoing agenda and would need to become part of daily operations.

Here are the basic scenarios that seem to be constants:

1. Relationship Based – Ex-spouse, stalkers, spouse of adulterous staff member, relationship gone bad between co-workers.
2. Disgruntled Staff – Issues at home, bad work relationships, stressful work environment, disciplinary actions and separations from the company
3. Terrorist/bad guys – This maps to more of a physical security posture, beyond the duck and cover training.

There are other things to consider but it would require insight into your workforce, operations and specifics concerning potential variables.

Off the top of my head, here are some options for next steps:

1. Evaluate work/life balance and management approach to staff
2. Craft staff support services if practical
3. Evaluate and improve lines of communication (staff to management + management to management).
4. Implement and manage daily use of process and procedures. This will address how to manage the handling and coordinating communication for work relationship issues, reported "outside work" concerns, work stress response and disciplinary/separation actions.

You may have this covered, but I just had a cup of Cuban coffee and 3 rum balls…. and wanted to add some insight and possible options.

Be Safe,
