According to Tony Basilio, we met with a QB

Especially with them bouncing around like they are with little to zero development.
Why is it a forgone conclusion that Tennessee would have to pay 4 million.....The talent level at Qb in portal currently will definitely not have that price tag....More like 6 figures only.

I hope they don't drop for 4mil for what is currently sitting in the portal.

I listen to Basilio fairly often, but I think it’s a stretch to think that Tenn is sitting there waiting for a QB to hit the portal in a couple of days so they can pay them $4M. I could see them adding one for depth possibly, but I don’t think it would be one of the top QBs in the nation. And that’s what it would have to be to even think about $4M.
You do realize the QB would come into the portal right? And if they're making $1.5 mil now and TN is willing to pay $4 mil ... you don't think they'd entertain that?

Where is it said that TN is willing to pay $4 mil. They turned Nico down for that. We are not getting a top quarterback from the portal that is worth $4 mil and we have established that we are not going to overpay.

That’s going to have to be a really special QB entering the portal tomorrow to get $4M. I don’t think THAT type of QB will be hitting the portal this go around. They spurned Nico asking $4M. Who’s potentially entering the portal that’s worth more than $1.5M to $2M?

Tony is always big fishing.

But we aren’t.

Heupel builds culture first. He wants to home grow his team. He will not transfer in and start over Merk.

It sends the wrong message to GMAC and future HS recruits

We will find a smart, accurate, mature backup with good study habits.

Source: can’t disclose
Evidence: Tony’s track record
Evidence: Heupels loyalty

I think Basillio said it, so take it with about 100 grains of salt. However, I think the gist of this situation is that UT has the money, but they were not willing to pay it to Nico because his current skill level and they were getting tired of working with his chaotic dad and agent. In business sometimes it comes down to who you like, and UT no longer liked him and his camp.

Baseball is a completely different sport. Its disingenuous to compare Tony and Heupel. Other sources are saying they are absolutely looking for a new QB.

If we roll into the fall with Merklinger as the starter, IMHO we are looking at a disaster.

Not a negative on the kid. He has a very bright future, but from what I have observed he is not ready to start.

If he IS the starter, to me that says that Heupel was caught flat footed and even then did little to nothing in response. And that would greatly surprise me.

Time will tell.

It's harsh to say Heupel was caught flat footed in this. He's obviously known it was brewing but what were his options?

You'd have had him go recruiting for a QB instead of other positions. So he should ignore holes we ACTUALLY have and recruit for a hole we MIGHT have?

Tell me, what should he have done? Should he have told Nico to walk after the championship run? What would you have done?

Hooker and Milton were both transfers, not "home grown."

"Disaster" seems a bit strong. Can't imagine Merk could do much worse than three passing touchdowns against Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky and Oklahoma combined (as Nico did). Those results sound like a recipe for disaster, but turned out not to be.

I think for Heupel to be clean in this one he had to let Nico kind of show his true nature to the fans. Fans and the collective have invested a lot in Nico.

I don't care if the only QB we had on campus was was 80 yr old Dewey Warren. Heupel did the right thing to move on far away from the cancer that is Nico.
