According to Rivals, our class is ranked #3

It really is about filling needs...CLK was great at getting Stars, but he sucked at filling needs.

Right! He got the ones who could make a big splash, but couldn't swim after they got in the water. They would float and then drift away!

I'm predicting that we finish with these three players, assuming that we keep all of our current committments:

DT - K. Kirven
DT - J. Briscoe
WR - Q. Davis

I'll take what we have committed now and add those three and go to Neyland Stadium and dance ALL NIGHT!!! Any body want to dance???

in the SEC (to this point). I could definitely live with that. Especially with all the coaching changes we have gone through. I hope we at least stay at #3 in the SEC.

#3 at this point means nothing when there is still a week to go and you have schools like Georgia and Auburn in particular waiting on a bunch of highly rated guys that both are in very good shape for along with having a lot less current commits than Tennessee.

I think Tennessee ends up around 6th in the conference (I'm counting A&M in the SEC) with this class when all is said and done.

Also, it might be more productive to count the number of 4/5* players rather than looking at the ranking since some of the "depth" type 2/3* players pull the rankings down. Since DD arrived through current commits:

Bama- 54
UF- 46
Aub-39
LSU- 37
UT- 35
UGA- 29
USCe- 21
A&M- 18
UM- 16
Ark- 9
MSU- 9
MU- 9
VU- 5
UK- 3

I do not know the class size limits for the other schools but as we stand now UT is getting its share compared to most everyone else with the exception of Bama who is beating everyone.

One of the glaring realities of the numbers I just posted is that retention and development mean a great deal too. Arkansas was pretty clearly the third best team in the SEC and maybe a break or two away from playing for the NC. USCe may have been the best team in the East with UGA benefiting from a lighter West schedule.

Yep. And UGA will have the same benefits of their schedule again this year.

I believe B. Brown was our last 5 star recruit. Before him, when was our last 5 star recruit? I am not a stargazer. This a curiosity question. I do feel a player must have talent, but alot of the players success depends on developing the talent and how much drive to succeed the player has.

D Rogers was actually the last 5* signed by UT.

Janzen Jackson was a 5*. There were none in the '08 class. The '07 class was loaded.... with busts: Vinson (discipline), Donald (overrated), Martin (injuries), O'Neal (incredibly overrated),... Only Berry panned out.

Problem is the two ahead of us are our biggest rivals and 2 teams we have to play every season.

This to me is the most accurate measurement tool and the one I typically use. Did you back out the players who are no longer on rosters?

All I know is that in a week these questions will be answered and then we can finally look ahead to spring practice. I know how much recruiting wears me down, trying to keep up with it all and worrying if this guy will come here or if everyone will stay "true" to their commitment. Must be really wearing on the guys having to make the decisions. Players and coaches.
Overall I like the class. Santos needs to stay true, Kirven would be great to have, but so far not one OL in the class. That just really bugs me, but I guess CDD feels that we have an adequate supply. I hope they are right. I"m one that just thinks that you can never have too many guys ready to wage war in the trenches in the SEC.

No. I didn't take time to do that but believe that Auburns number may be inflated by JUCO's who are gone.

There was such a void when DD arrived that now there is somewhat of a logjam. I believe that Crowder, Kerbyson, and Posey all RS'd. Your true Sophs will be Jackson and Tiny. RS So is Pair I believe. Jrs will be James, Fulton, Bullard, and Stone (possibly Schofield). Anderson, Gooch, and Thomas will be Srs.

By class that is: 3, 3, 4, 3. More of a normal distribution of talent. Next year will need to be a very solid class of OL's.

Auburn and uga will likely jump UT. Whether we're 3rd or 6th on NSD this is an excellent class coming in and we should be excited regardless. The difference btw the 10th class overall and the 15th could really come down to one or two players. I'm sure there will be people disappointed if we finish 6th in the SEC but this class is solid and Dooley and Co deserve a ton of credit.

I disagree that ga and uga will easily jump us (who knows what will happen) but agree these rankings are a crap-shoot anyway. we could easily look back in 5 or 7 years and say the 10th ranked team in the rivals rankings was the best class by far. just too many factors like grades, arrests, player development, transfers, coaching changes...if we're in the top 10-12 and fill positions of need I'm happy. hopefully we can find some stability and get some key positions developed and get back on top. gbo!
