I hate to hear about all of the turmoil within the team right now. I honestly don't think Butch is "the" guy to take us to the promise land, but he's a decent coach and excellent recruiter. He's probably the best coach in the East but would be 4 or 5 in the West. He needs a new OC for sure and to take his hands off the wheel.
The players are largely upset because they fully bought into the hype in preseason and got their bubble burst by A&M. Some guys show maturity, others won't. The guys who need to leave should be shown the door no matter how many stars.
Above all things, we need stability. We need to stay off the coaching carousel and focus on recruiting and player development. If we don't have the right assistant coaches or trainers, then recognize it and fix it.

Well, I don't think you should keep anybody around just for the sake of stability.

But, I didn't think Butch should be fired before this press conference, and I don't think he should be fired now. He is owning this press conference. He is impressive.

I still think this has been a very poor coaching job this season, and mostly because he failed to nip the Hurd issue in the bud before it hurt the team. I also expect some needed staff changes in the offseason. But, I still think Butch can get us to where we want to go.

Stability? The team is in turmoil. His best recruiting class is in shambles as about half them left the team already.

He is not an excellent recruiter. He has done a good job finding some 3 star diamond in the rough types, but he has not stocked the team with 4 and 5 star quality. When you can't out talent teams, you have to out coach them and we've seen that is not going to happen.

I want Butch to succeed and supported him. Today shows he is losing the team, losing the fans, and does not even realize what the problems are much less how to fix them. He is too stubborn to do things that would help this team. Winning the next 4 games does nothing to restore confidence-- especially when he comes out next year and laments having to replace Dobbs and not having any one with experience -- only because he refuses to let one play.

Yep, people act like letting a crappy coach linger around for years is stability. UT will let another coach burn before we make a change. The university just isn't committed like other top SEC programs.

Best coach in the East? :blink:

Excellent recruiter? He had 2 great classes filled with legacies, playing time, and empty promises. The last class was average, this class is below average, and the future wont be any better because recruits can see through the BS now. All the clichés mean jack now. What WR would play in this offense? Tee is a great example... huge recruit, lifelong Vol fan, in TN backyard, and committed to Clemson because he knows there will be no success in this trash offense we have.

Player development? I'm seeing regression this year. There is no doubt talent on this team, but its not producing.

Stability? Keeping Dooley as long as we did worked out well. Keeping a coach who shows no sign of peaking any higher than mediocre is not stability. Get someone who can win with this talent NOW.

Burn the entire athletics department to the ground, go Div. III. Level Neyland and turn it into a riverside park. Re-purpose the "Dooley" athletic center for regular student uses. There won't be an end to 100+ years of Tennessee football, but, Tennessee will no longer be in the SEC or a bitter disappointment to its "fans." Look on the bright side, the Vols could play Suwanee again...

Butch Jones is a good recruiter, the best coach in the SEC east, not even close, sorry to say

The numbers speak for themselves. He can recruit. Keep in mind that the 2012 class was him picking up Dooley's prices.
As for any comparison to Dooley, that's a load of crap. Our team's record has done nothing but improve since Butch has shown up. Every year we've gotten better and better. For the first time in a decade Tennessee has been mentioned in the same breath as a national championship even if it was a long shot. We've got our problems right now for sure. But laying the entire blame for the program at the feet of the coach and thinking that firing him is going to solve all of our problems is horse****. Now go que up the Jon Gruden airplane sightings threads for 2016.

This failure of a hire should have been painfully obvious to people even as we announced it. Huge waste of 4 years and the legacies. Sad that folks will believe in anything if it makes them feel good about reality.

Stability argument is garbage w.r.t. regards to recruiting too. I bet if you did a study on coaches' first full class they would actually be better than their average class. HS players buy hope.

What is it with you people thinking Jon Gruden is the savior of Volunteers football?
Gruden hasn't coached football in eight years, and he hasn't coached at the collegiate level in over 25 years. His collegiate experience consists of
- Tennessee (1986–1987) Graduate assistant
- Southeast Missouri State (1988) Passing game coordinator
- Pacific (1989) Wide receivers coach
That's it. The remainder of his coaching career was in the NFL.

AND, some here on VN want the AD retiring in a few months to fire Butch Jones, eat the remaining term of his contract, and commit outlandish sums to hire Jon Gruden, leaving all of this at the feet of the incoming AD. Once the athletics department is stuck paying huge sums to former coaches who no longer work at Tennessee, finances are threadbare, and the program is in shambles, poison to any quality recruits, THEN, you are sure to want the blameless AD who inherited the mess to be replaced and to start all over again, absolutely certain that the new guys will have the Vols competing for championships in a couple of years.

Frankly, you're all better off speculating on land deals along the 38th parallel on the Korean peninsula.
