About the zero sacks

If you can’t get to the QB through the Ball State pass protection, how do you see us defending against FL, LSU, AL, and UGA (or Pitt for that matter)?
How are you supposed to get to the qb in 2-3 seconds? They ran short routes all night long. I don’t care who you are, nobody will get to the qb in 2 seconds.

Alabama and uga play like when you turn off offsides as a penalty in ncaa and then move a defensive player to be right beside the qb before the snap. That’s what I’ve been told.

The notion that Ball State should have been dominated up and down the field for 60 minutes and lost 75-0 is a fantasy land. I can't think of the last time we beat an opponent, any opponent that badly from start to finish. Maybe Western Kentucky in 2009 or Tennessee Tech in 2016 but they are a bad D2 program. Every year this happens after every opponent Volnation feels should be beaten by 100 points, it doesn't happen and the gnashing of teeth begins. We are in no position yet to be beating a team that went to a bowl game the year before by a huge margin with total domination. We just aren't there yet as a program.
D line is pathatic. Edge guys are bad. Interior guys guys just bad. B St a bad team.

There were multiple plays where the QB had the ball longer than 3 seconds weren’t there? (Just going from memory, but my time perception could be off)

Bama & Ga will dance with our dates, steal our lunch money & sleep with our moms. When it’s going to stop?

Yes we rushed for 218 yards and the QBs were kept clean all night long

Correct, we could have easily scored 80 points. When is the last time UT ever threatened that against any team? It happens every offseason on here. People get all jazzed up about recruiting and Spring practice then throw out ridiculous expectations that fly in the face of reality and get upset when UT doesn't meet said expectations. This is a 6-9 win team who beat a team about as well as they could have.

Hard to get sacks when the QB gets the ball out of his hands really fast.

That was their game plan to throw our defense out of rhythm.

Not concerned about the defense. They did their job last night.
No they didn’t. They sucked. Ball St was a bad team which made TN look better. Pitt going to eat us up.

I would argue we’re closer to 8-9 wins than we are 6-7 with an outside chance at 10 wins if everything goes right. The only glaring concern I had from last night is #4 on defense. The pass rush is to early to tell. Had we got pushed around and ran on, then I would be concerned with the D line.

You can't play CB's 10 yds off the ball, give WR's a free release, and let the QB have a 5 yd hitch as an easy button and hope to get sacks.

They were too passive in playcalling and scheme. I try to wait and give guys time but Banks is really beginning to concern me.

UT's CB's in particular need to play physical at the LOS and get the QB's timing off. If UT did that at all last night, I didn't see it.
I understand what your saying but I’ve seen where banks calls the defense agressively and last night was the not the case and let’s be honest he didn’t have to. The game was never in question

Yes, overall I am very happy. That doesn’t change the fact that I am concerned about the dline. They did play fundamentally sound and seemed to fill their assigned gaps. But they have to be able to wreck havoc in the backfield when required. The Pitt game will tell us a lot

Completely fair and understandable

I know some will make a big deal out of us having no sacks vs. Ball State.

We played very vanilla on defense. I don’t recall us blitzing and Ball State was clearly using the short passing game to get the ball out quick. We also played a lot of players on defense.

We will see how the DL looks vs Pitt.
I’m not worried yet. However, if the don’t get pressure in the Pitt game, then I’ll start getting concerned.

It wouldn't surprise me if we purposely didn't show too much on either defense or offense to not give Pitt too much to look at.

Heupel has played Pitt the last 3 yrs. There’s some new wrinkles I’m sure they’ve added this yr but most of this game is coming down to who makes big plays. It did LY & Pickett won.

We had 2 TFL and 7 QB hurries and 3 turnovers. 1 interception was on the only long ball they threw all game. You’re being hysterical.

It's amazing how people don't notice how many times we were cut block during this game, as well.

That is not impressive against a P5 team, let alone Ball State.

Edit: Jaylen Wright did average 6.8 ypc though. I get the concern with how many times they were meeting us at the LOS or in the backfield though.
Outside of the 33 yard run that Wright had our RBs averaged 4.7 YPC and they had to fight for every bit of them for the most part. The fact there weren’t many running plays where the first defender to touch them was a LB is concerning. Because if we struggled to create holes for them against Ball State it’s going to be even tougher to do so against Pitt and Florida’s DL

We were vanilla on offense because we chose to be not because Ball State's defense forced into being vanilla. That is a ridiculously bad take and we have no idea if the defense has improved. We played a ton of guys on defense who likely won't see the field very often this year.
We played a ton of guys...... in the 2nd half. Our first team D should have bullied their 1st team D. The talent/coaching gap is that big. This game should have been a shut out. Their scoring drive carved us to peices. Sure....it was one drive. But against Ball St.....at home......they shouldn't string a drive like that together. A play here and there is going to happen. But for that drive, they made it look easy.

They did pretty well in the second half running the ball. Let's be honest, Tennessee could have scored 80 points if they wanted to. We aren't a dominate team so to expect overly dominating performances against anyone is setting yourself up for disappointment. Are we improving? Absolutely, especially on offense overall but the defense is and will continue to be a question mark simply based off of our style of offense. Time will tell whether or not this style of play can win 9-10 games in the SEC but right now no one knows the answer to that.
From last nights game I don’t think the offense has improved at all from last year and our defense seems to have regressed

One thing I know. We have Players returning Thomas inside several others inside. Young and Baron on outside that did have sacks and tackle for loss last year so we know they can do it and should be better this year. 2nd the strength of Ball St was OL and receiving core so they played to their Strength with quick throws and trying to run the ball. Yes I would of liked few more plays in backfield and I know Coach G will have a discussion with his group. So let's see how things go starting with Pittsburgh. We Won 59-10 and we did this while still trying to rebuild this roster back to the days we had NFL caliber kids dotting our D. In CHRIST Alone
