I realize that recruiting is the lifeblood of good teams but something doesn't add up.

Take Virginia Tech. I never recall seeing them have top 5 or top 10 classes but they have been consistantly good for 17 years now.
The majority of their players come from Virginia. They tend to be local guys.

We all know that Fulmer decided to recruit kids he could be a father fiqure to instead of how good a player they were but generally speaking the classes were at least top 20 (I know we had the class a few years ago that was like 34 but that was just one class).

I guess I am asking what the "intangibles" are that makes VT so good and us so pitiful.
Are the class rankings just BS?
Are they not properly motivated? Only interested in the NFL?

There has got to be something more than just recruiting that is the reason we stink now.

Thoughts?

You're overrating VT. The only time they've been competitive for a national title was when they were starting Michael Vick. Other than that, they have a few Big East titles during Miami's down years, and they have a couple of championships from the bad ACC. They may have done well with what they have, but we all want UT to be at a better level than Tech.

But you saw what they did to us a few nights ago, right?
I know they have not won a NC but they aren't stinking up the ACC and getting blown out in bowl games.

Whatever they are doing is better than what we have been doing.

Another thing to consider, VA is loaded with HS talent... LOADED. No it's not Florida, Texas or California; but so many players from VA go to the NFL its not even funny. I can't understand it, but VA doesn't get enough credit for its HS talent IMO!

There team was simply far better than UT's was.

This raises another question, why doesn't the state of Tennessee produce more blue chip talent?

I can't figure it out?

That is exactly what he is talking about.I'm sure VT has not out recuited us in the last four years but they develop their players.

Heres the deal...our depth is low. There were too many walk ons and freshman playing. There is a gap in our recruiting right now. We need 2 more classes of recruites.

fulmer's classes were ranked high, but very few of those players actually participated in the chick-fil-a bowl or are even on the team now. and stop over-rating virginia tech. we weren't that good this year. believe it or not, beating us isn't a big deal. if va tech plays florida, ole miss, lsu they lose. and they'd struggle with arkansas and auburn.

Everyone keeps missing this point....We are down 20+ scholarship players due to dismissals, players leaving the program, and injuries. All in the last year. Name one BCS school in the country this year that has that many missing players???

Star rankings are overrated. Getting guys that fit your system well and being good students is far more important. What you see at Tech is a system that's been in place for a very long time and they know just what athletes fit it. Beamer is a good coach and he has a good staff around him. Complacency is the enemy of coaches who have been in one place a very long time. Some combat that with refreshing the assistants from time to time. Most of a head coach's job is being a manager, a organizer. Tennessee is a classic example of a team that gave their head coach too much control over the program and his blind loyalty to his assistants is what done him in. He was also a micromanager and that never helps. Tennessee is where they're at because the coach got complacent and the AD wouldn't pull the trigger soon enough. Lane has been left to pick up the pieces. It's going to be a few years before we see if it's going to work or not. I know Hamilton wants it to work, his job depends on it.

Well a lot of Blue chip talent comes out of Memphis, problem is we compete with Bama and Ole Miss, both schools are closer to Memphis than we are. But as far as the overall state talent is concerned, your guess is as good as mine.

Personally the way I see it is this way.. Since you used Virginia Tech as an example so will I.. Ryan Williams was a 4* recruit that not many recruiters were aware of due to where he played (Stonewall Jackson) in Manassas Virginia. Virginia Tech recruits locally so they found the gem. I think that the stars represent popularity of the prospect rather then skill. For instance Ndamukong Suh was a 4* recruit when he was coming out of high school. But my theory could also be debunked by the Sugar Bowl in which Florida which is mostly 5* recruits demolished Cincy who is mostly coached up 2 and 3* recruits. I don't know really its a crapshoot.

Percy Harvin cam out of VA..and we saw what happened with that when he was "there"

This list is old, but look at some of the names VA has produced that are in the NFL.... This doesn't count the players who weren't born in VA but played their HS ball in Va. Also don't forget Allen Iverson who could have played in college/nfl had he not played basketball!

I wonder is Fulmer had stayed we keep some of the guys that left.

Would they be worth keeping?

I thought EJ Abrams Ward was going to be the next big time receiver. Wonder why he left?

recruiting rankings are not overrated imo. every program that had #1 recruiting class this decade won a national championship this decade, and consistently competed for national championships.
Bama was #1 for the past couple of years, Florida was #1 before that. higher recruting ranking= most likely high chance of success.
looking at past 5-6 years or so, Tennessee and Florida State is like the only exception.

TN high school football is pretty much a joke when compared to other states, even Mississippi. It's not much better than KY.

VT overrated??? They have a SOLID football program under Beamer.

Hokies have had 6 straight 10 win seasons. The only program in the country that can match that is Texas (9 consecutive seasons).

your right. TN has no clue how to organize anything when it comes to high school. we have the worst education system. i dont understand how a school like science hill doesnt become a power house and produce
D1 talent. they have all those athletes but no one to motivate them into playing football
