? about Crompton and ratings

How in the hell could he be rated as high as he was???

And is that not what a coach is supposed to do take a HIGHLY rated QB?? We took him...And he was HIGHLY RATED!

I have asked myself a hundred times. Did we only look at his stats in high school?!?! High school players have so many variables to whether they will become good college players or not. Crompton does not look off his receivers, EVER!!! I have seen Jr. High QB's play mechanically better than Crompton. I would love to see cromptons HS videos and review his tapes to see why he was such a coveted player.

Ratings are inherently flawed...It's up to the coach to recruit based on what he sees in the player. Mechanics, god given skill, and mentality. I know others recruited the cromptonator, but it's still on fulmer that he couldn't recruit a QB that is capable of throwing a 6 yard slant.

Some people just cant translate their skills to the next level. He was second behind Mark Sanchez in his class I believe. He had raw talent but it just didnt pan out, atleast not yet. I still think he has a few good games to be had this year.

Don't understand why he was rated so high. I remember 2 NC guys laughing to me the week we signed him. They had watched him play in HS often and didn't understand why TN wanted him. In one's words: "I know you guys are happy about getting Crompton but you will soon see he is not a starting QB in the SEC". I just laughed and thought it was sour grapes because a NC school didn't get him. I was wrong and they were right.

I remember watching volquest.com everyday for updates on Crompton just hoping we would get him. Now I find myself hoping he will just quit and go start his life after UT.

Crompton is not a bad qb, he just plays bad in games because he has never gotten comfortable at this level. It is all mental with him, he just can't seem to get past it. He psychs himself out before he even sets foot on the field. It's not entirely his fault. He is somewhat a victim of circumstance but he does lack the mental toughness to overcome it.

Ya and if we hadn't you would have blamed Fulmer etc!

I am just saying if someone is rated that high you have to take him!!!

Guess we shouldnt take Tyrik Rollison if he wanted to be a Vol!

This. I really think Fulmer thought they were set at QB after Ainge for the next 2 years due to his performances in practice and the LSU appearance. I don't blame Fulmer necessarily for this except that he did NO recruiting after getting Crompton. Stephens didn't get recruited hardly anywhere else and Coleman wanted to come here since he was 3.

Not so sure about that. There were a lot of coaches after Crompton. Steve Spurrier made a major push to bring him to SC right after he got the job.

He has all the physical traits and mechanical skills, it is just that he has had is confidence rocked somewhere along the line, which causes him to fold when the play busts. A great coach will reinstall the necessary confidence in a talented QB. Crompton could take us to a winning season with some surprising victories if CLK nurtures him quickly, but his chance at legend status is long gone.

Probably more than one highly rated quarterbacks are a bust in any given year. Our mistake was highlighted the last two years because we had to play him because the quarterbacks competing for the job were no better or worse.
