I hesitate to make this post because I know I take the risk of sounding like a sore loser with thin skin, but here I go anyhow ...

I went to the game on Saturday. Does anyone else think Cal fans showed less class than the fans of any winning team in recent memory? I've been to quite a few away games, including losses at Georgia and Alabama, and I've never experienced as much outright hostility as I did on my way out of the stadium and through campus to the BART in Berkeley.

Granted, I've never been to Gainesville.

I know there are always a few idiots who give everyone else a bad name (we have them ourselves), but it just seemed like there was an abundance of them at Cal.

Perhaps it was worse because I had the misfortune of walking down frat row, or perhaps they just aren't used to winning big games and don't know how to win with a little class. Just wondering what the others who went thought.

I found them to be gracious and pleasant overall, but the young kids were really hyped about this game. The classless behavior happened inside the stadium when they continued to cheer while a Tennessee player was imobilized on the field for well over 5 minutes.

Frat row is vicious to visiting fans, mostly because they've been drinking beer all day, they're dumb, and they're more interested in failing in picking up chicks that night.

For the most part, our student football fans are generally pleasant folk who go to the game, cheer, and then go party/celebrate/clubbing afterwards. They're a pretty affable if apathetic bunch. You're probably isolating a section of the student population and placing them in the majority because the majority of our fans couldn't make noise. (And I'm not saying all noisy fans are classless, but a considerable portion, particularly frat brothers, can get really obnoxious. God I hate frat boys.)

Trust me, if you thought it was rough Saturday, wait until the Trojans come to town. We HATE USC.

Like I said in another thread - I was only truly offended IN the stadium. A few drunk frat boys tried to sling insults from their windows, but overall, outside Memorial, they were good.

I am glad someone said it. My wife and I went to berkeley and met my brother, who is a UC grad. He actually admitted that while hey get rowdy for sc and ucla they were humiliated to lose to UT given their overall opinion of us. I was right by the players entrance and even after the game the fans (none of which were current students 40yrs+) were saying terrible things to the players about moms and and other family. Many of the players family were right there. It was truely sad. However. The players were not very excited when the entered and never got fired up consistantly during the game. This was a poor job of coaching and preparation on our fault and opened a door that never should have been opened. The Cal fans, in my opinion really didn't think they would win..Thus their reaction..It sure sucked for us too.

That I get. Fans of many programs can get nasty at the games when the program's chips are down.

Said it a million times at The Nation.

If you get more than 1,000 people together there's bound to be some jerks out there. So you get 70,000 together............

i must have told you guys 30 times to not walk down frat row.

And we definetly have fans that need to know how to be gracious winners. Unfortunetly I hear these reports a lot. I don't think it's much better otherplaces unfortunetly.

no place on earth can match Gainesville, by the way, the programs that have never won before are the worst, it's like new money, you can buy the house, the car, but you cant buy class.

I have been to Gainesville with wins and losses...Gators fans will give you what you give them. In a win or loss if you smack at them, they will you, but if you give them respect in their wins and losses, in general, they are respectful. They are one of the most passionate fan bases in the nation, especially in Gaineville. You have to understand, for years, they were in the basement...they just started their tradition only 15 years ago. They are on the height of their program in history..maybe Cal is at their height, but they have a few things ot learn. Was there and understand your grief. Never go down any frat row after the opposing game....you may not find much dignity even at UT after a win on frat row. Been on both sides of that spectrum.

I thanked every Vol fan I saw in LA or San Jose for coming out and I know my friends who actually went to the game did the same. We all wanted to return the hospitality we received in knoxville. Personally I base my opinion on a teams fanbase on those of legal drinking age. Hopefully for those who less than a great experience in berkeley, the rest of the trip made up for it.

But there weren't any "UT Sucks" chants or other derogatory remarks that have been commonplace at most Southeastern Conference venues. In other words, the home-crowd fans were just as nice as the weather.

"This is my first time in Berkeley," said Franklin resident Mary Alice Coon, 26, a UT grad.

"It's a good vibe. (Cal fans) are nice and don't seem to be as competitive. They're saying, 'Good luck,' and, 'Have a good game.' We would never say that. That's because they're probably friendlier than some of us."

I'm glad to hear that hat. As someone said in another thread. . . Cal has way to many freshman fans who probably have never been to a football game. That's what happens when most of your student body was the class nerd in high school and is just finding booze for the first time.

Absolutely fine before and after the game. In Memorial, at least in the Blue Zone, not so hot. Still, I give Cal fans an A overall for general hospitality.

The coolest part of the Saturday was walking to Memorial and about halfway there, the pep band/cheerleaders/Smokey were in some sort of commons area (other side of Bear's Lair building) playing Rocky Top and leading cheers. A lot of Cal fans watched, too. It was neat.

What did you guys think of the stadium/campus? We are very proud of our campus.

Fans were gracoius outside..no problems walking back to Bart.

My only problems were inside:
* PA systems pumping in growls and Godzilla stomps while our offense was at the line calling plays
* Students cheering and doing the gator chop while our player lay motionless

Overall, a very good crowd compared to the harassment I get at SEC games
