The former Top247 prospect emerged on special teams as a true freshman in 2015, playing the role as the speedy road-grader carving out the holes that helped Evan Berry return three kick returns for touchdowns, lead the nation in average yards per return and become an All-American.
And believe it or not, Abernathy insisted Tuesday that he, Berry and everyone else on the kick return team could have and should have been even better in that area last season.
I knew that if everybody did their job, 11-for-11 on the field with Evan back there I mean, I thought we could have done even better, really, Abernathy said after Tuesdays practice on Haslam Field.
Abernathy, who has become a factor on Tennessees defense with a strong winter workout period, strong spring practice, strong summer workout period and strong start to preseason camp, bought into his special teams role from Day One last season, serving as the secondary kick return specialist whose main job was to make room for the electrifying Berry to make plays.
Thats a job Abernathy said hes more than happy to repeat this season.
