Aaron Hayden likes hire

Would think he’s referring to hiring Garner and Big Kat following him.
Garner is a good hire just for recruiting, gives Heupel an in with HS coaches in the SE.

That would be my guess, as well.

Does it seem strange to anyone else that Heupel hired a DL coach and still does not have a DC? Usually the DC hires his own DL/LB coaches or at least has input on them. If you are a DC and Heupel comes to you and says "I want you to be DC but I already hired your DL coach and there is this guy named Steele you are going to need to figure out what to do with him". What would you think?

Yeah, Henry T is gone unfortunately. Dad already said it was a mistake choosing Tennessee the 1st time. Would love for us to have the last laugh if he goes to Bama. One of these storybook endings has to go our way eventually.

I actually hope for the best for the kid. Came here under a band of (largely) morons, was told to drop weight, then not taught how to drop into coverage.

Without Slingblade et al, I bet Henry T grows into a fine LB. just wish it could have been here.

The DC should value this hire and be confident in his own abilities. Almost seems like Steele would be the DC though.

I see your point. But I also understand that Garner is regarded as an absolute take for any staff with an opening. So, it should attract a DC rather than the other way around (hopefully).

Multiple people have talked about this. Garner wanted to be here and it seems like he was. Ok’ing regardless of who the DC is. I would be shocked if either Conklin or Rogers would say no to someone like Garner.

I get what you are saying and if it was some run of the mill coach then I would say no. But Garner is a seasoned vet in the SEC. He brings instant credibility and a ton of high level experience.

Not so sure that report was accurate. The report came from Bama writer initially, then was just regurgitated by local “journalist”

I'm sure Heupel, given the choice, would have rather had the DC hire wrapped up by now as well. If the media reports are true though, his first choice wouldn't commit one way or the other dragging out the process.

So flip your question then. If you are a Defensive Line Coach, one who is well respected and would be welcome at multiple programs and Heupel comes to you and says, "I want you to coach my DL Coach but I haven't hired my DC yet and need to see if he wants you too or would bring in someone else. What do you think? Do you wait around or the opportunity to interview or do you take a job elsewhere?

In a perfect world, yes, hire the Coordinators first and then assistants. But you don't let a great hire escape just because it doesn't work out exactly that way. I've no doubt that Garner was told the type of DC that Heupel wants and probably even who he's talking with. Likewise, the candidates that he was brining in Garner and each side is fine w/it. There's still other staff openings to put your mark on the program.
