We are 4-1 with a good chunk of the starting defense out and we have a bye week coming up. The defense struggled at times but still came through when it mattered. Our receivers didn’t help Joey much today but still did just enough when it mattered. I’ll admit I was frustrated at times and honestly questioned whether we could get a stop when we needed it. But guess what, we got that stop when we needed it most and our running game came through in crunch time. I still really like this team and staff. They’re obviously not perfect. Timeout management was suspect today but we got the win. Celebrate it instead of getting yourself worked up and convincing yourself that they’re not good enough. Why follow the team if you constantly think they suck and don’t like watching them?

Good analysis. Level headed and balanced post.
Pretty much sums up how I felt during/after the game.

Here’s a few things that make me nervous - and not based solely on just this game.

- Huepel has got to get better with his execution at the end of halves. It’s egregious some of the calls he makes.
- Our teams under Hype do not travel well. We are sloppy, undisciplined, and make uncharacteristic mistakes during road games.
- He can coach scared at the worst times.

Overall, happy with the staff, but I do think this will keep us from winning a title.

Nice level headed post. Nothing wrong with calling out the obvious but most importantly, you can’t ignore Heupel and company getting a huge road win.

Exactly. they had every reason to sh*t the bed today but they kept scrapping and got over the hump. Heup proved some doubter wrong today

I’m not saying never question the staff but there’s a point, for me anyway, where is it even fun to watch anymore if you’re constantly questioning the staff on every single play and yelling at the players? The staff has evolved too. The offense this year has new wrinkles in it that we haven’t seen since they’ve been here. They’re willing to make changes.

Defense had the onions to bow up when it mattered the most. You know those guys were exhausted but they got it done in crunch time.

Just watched the highlights and looked at the stats.

The sky is not falling. We had 3 uncharacteristic turnovers that set up 17 points for them.

Thankfully the D balanced that out with with a couple scores.

Also had a long TD called back for O PI which it was not.

Miss State’s floor is 8 wins this year. They will be in every game.

As the saying goes: Good teams find a way to win.

This is a 1990s type of vols road win..

Whole team Did not play Not perfect.

Refs give em 14

D made MASSIVE plays

Offensively figured it out in crunch time.

Vols win!
Exactly. That 98 team had a one score road win against an Auburn team that won 3 games. I'm pumped on this team's resilience. How many times have you seen a Tennessee team give up after the other team has a big play. We literally scored a touchdown on defense the play after they converted a fake punt in the fourth quarter. That's mental composure.

Exactly. Any road win in this league is a good win.

The things that usually happen when the underdog wins happened today - deflected INT's, a fake punt, a couple of ridiculously brutal calls by these hideous officials that cost us two TD's - and despite playing a sloppy game offensively, being gashed on the ground all night, gifting them points on a fumbled punt, and some horrid clock management, we found a way to get it done when it counted.

Expect the usual suspects on here to say the sky is falling, we stink and won't win 8 games, etc., etc. Every game is different, this one was always going to be herky jerky and a struggle, but I'm proud of the guys for hanging in there and making plays when they had to be made. Now let's get healthy and get ready for Arkansas.

It’s close to home for me because I used be the kind of fan who was overly critical. I just reached the point where I could either try to enjoy watching the team play or constantly criticize the players and coaches every week and eventually stop following the team. The former is the way IMO.

People expecting flawless play with the level of competition are never going to satisfied. The key is for both offense and defensive units to be be capable of complimenting each other. Limit penalties and mistakes. No team is perfect, but the Vols have talent on both sides of the ball. And the good thing is this team can get a lot better. GBO!
