A win is a win but I want to be brutally honest

Arkansas might have the best QB we are going to face this season next to Ty Simpson they also have two good hard running RB’s. They are perhaps one of the most snake bit teams i’ve ever seen over the last few years they play in alot of close games but lose most of them. It wouldn’t surprise me if they upset A&M this saturday in Fayetteville.
I wish we had their RB’s.

It feels like Banks is forced to play less men in the box to support the weak players in the secondary. Still, the receivers are wide open and the backs are gashing us. It reminds me of the Sunseri defensive era.
How short your memory is then. Maybe you forgot Troy carving us up for 750 yards in Neyland.

Nooooooooo

Whether you like it or not-Heupel offenses are built to go fast. Whenever we try to drain clock-bad things usually happen.

A 15 minute drive with 22 running plays would have been Jeremy Pruitts wet dream though
Ya know, I had to circle back to this comment because while they might be built to go fast, they really have not gone fast for the past 2 seasons, have they? Yes, there have been a handful of drives that were successful in under 2 minutes however, that is no longer the norm with our Offense, is it?

We have some studs on the D-line, which makes it really disturbing how bad we have been overall on defense. We might have the worst safety tandem in the SEC with Turrentine and Farooq honestly. We lost Jakobe Thomas to the portal and didn’t replace him with anyone? I’m just not sure how anyone can watch our defense and not think Tim Banks should be fired. Once again i’m glad we won but it’s getting really tiring of the holes being wide open in our defense and getting gashed in the run game/ not containing the QB. From week 1 until now our defense has not only looked bad, but i would argue they are getting worse each week. Go Vols
I don't think it is significantly a talent problem. There are teams across CFB that can run a zone D with much lesser athletes. That points to coaching and discipline. And that... falls right at the feet of Banks.

Remember that NO ONE thought UT's D was undertalented before the season. In fact, most predicted the D would carry the O to a 9 win season. Well... I still don't think they're undertalented.

To those blaming Heupel or the O... All Banks has to do is get off the field then depth and fatigue aren't a problem. Yeah if you continually give up 3rd down with terrible schemes and zone discipline then you are going to stay on the field and wear your guys out.

A fast running O has to be matched by a D that gets off the field. At this point, I'd rather see them go hyper aggressive and use the Spurrier philosophy. Just get the ball back to the O whether they allow a score or get a stop... just do it in a hurry. "Bend, don't break" just won't work with this O.

We went fast the first qtr against Ga,and then slowed down and you see what happened. Hype has a history of getting up on good teams with up tempo and then slowing down giving them a chance to get back in the game. Exactly what hapened against Ga.

This is a pattern all season not just 1 game. They are playing a prevent defense which they know will give up a lot of yardage. They think they can still get stops by applying periodic pressure. That has worked but just enough to win the game. A win is a win. They are going to need to let the secondary stand on their own if they want to make the playoffs. Hopefully that starts this week. The secondary has 6 games under their belts, they should be ready for prime time 7:30 night game.

Sometimes I feel like people just enjoy watching the games no matter the results. I’m not that person. I didn’t grow up in Tennessee, I didn’t go to UTK, and I don’t have family there. I guess I just don’t have the feel good gene.

I’ve followed UT football since I was old enough to understand the sport and never once bandwagoned the Tide even though I live in Alabama. I’ve seen the rough years when we were flat-out bad, but I could still find enjoyment watching a few players ball out, like during the Tyler Bray years.

In 2025, we shouldn’t be happy with a poor defense. UT is one of the top NIL spenders and the talent is there. I don’t expect perfection, but this year has been disappointing from start to finish. There’s been no real improvement, no signs of getting better.

If you aren’t getting better, you’re getting worse. It’s that simple. People don't have to agree with me, but I am free to have an opinion just as much as they are. We all want the same thing; but I just can't be happy with what we've seen so far. We have not played the tough portion of our schedule yet.
All that sounded good to you, but all any fan can do is watch the games and enjoy. You can't coach. You can't call plays or recruit. Just make your points and move on. Blowing a gasket on the internet won't change anything.

“All that sounded good to you” if it doesn’t sound good to you as well, block me. I don’t care if you agree or don’t. It’s the point of message boards…. Not everyone has the same opinion; but don’t be frustrated when a post doesn’t fit into your Echo Chamber.

Some people are just weird and expect you to blindly follow without thoughts and opinions. It’s like you’re gaslighting me, saying I blew a gasket for not being happy with below average performance?

Have a good day, go Vols.

On offense, you can hide weak players. If you have a poor OT, you can chip. If you are weak at RB or WR, you can design around that. If you have a poor QB, you can change offensive philosophy.

On defense, you cannot hide poor players. They get "red-dotted" by offensive head coaches. And what is happening is Tennessee is getting attacked because of two players, Telander and Turrentine. That's the main problem. In the run game, you scheme anything towards Telander, and you basically have a free 5-10 yards. In the passing game, you attack Telander and Turrentine (which is the middle of the field), and you feast.

Unless Banks makes changes with those two guys (and we did see Telander's snap count go down in the 2nd half), the defense will continue to struggle.

If you are hoping your corners can help stop the run; you obviously have problems elsewhere.
Whatever Lombardi...just saying that key pieces of LEADERSHIP on the Defense have been Out & about since Game #1...which most assuredly has an effect on the overall performance of the defense...but, you coach the way YOU want to coach there, Vince.
