We have some studs on the D-line, which makes it really disturbing how bad we have been overall on defense. We might have the worst safety tandem in the SEC with Turrentine and Farooq honestly. We lost Jakobe Thomas to the portal and didn’t replace him with anyone? I’m just not sure how anyone can watch our defense and not think Tim Banks should be fired. Once again i’m glad we won but it’s getting really tiring of the holes being wide open in our defense and getting gashed in the run game/ not containing the QB. From week 1 until now our defense has not only looked bad, but i would argue they are getting worse each week. Go Vols

It’s a good point that they aren’t improving. Actually regressing and it goes with an earlier post I said where they gave up chunk plays consistently and weren’t close to making a play.

Is that why they gashed us on the first drive of the game? If the defense doesn’t want to get tired, it’s up to them to get off the field.

I look across the conference, and there’s defenses doing a lot better than ours with less. We could take our pick of at least 10 DCs in this league and they would be an upgrade over Banks

It’s not the safeties. It’s the LBs.

Just not ready to call on Banks to move on yet. Not many are talking tonight about injuries, but I have seen more time outs for injuries this year than any year prior. My God!! A coach can only be successful if when he calls "Next Up", that a reliable replacement steps in. Our replacements are doing their best but, are not as good as our starters.

We are 5-1 and 2-1 in the SEC, which has the most parity in the history of the league. I don't believe that a change in DC would alter our future this year. Gonna be brutal finish to the season. Hope the Vols can fight hard and give themselves a chance to win every game.

Whether you like it or not-Heupel offenses are built to go fast. Whenever we try to drain clock-bad things usually happen.

A 15 minute drive with 22 running plays would have been Jeremy Pruitts wet dream though

It's both. We are more talent-deficient at safety though, and I don't think it's close. It also seems that the linebackers are playing back farther to try and help the safeties out rather than being able to play downhill. I'm very much a layman though.

Agreed. Hampering the rhythm of our offense to prop up a defense that is going to get gashed, tired or fresh, would get us beat. Anytime this offense slows it down, it becomes a lot less effective

Started last years game with a near 8 minute drive and this year with 5 minute drive and td.
Just wreak havoc and get off your heels. Deal with getting beat on a play. Better than getting beat anyway 6 minutes later while the sideline deflates and your offense has to sit and watch.
I already mentioned, giving up 30 first downs is ridiculous.

Up 34-24 and the ball at midfield we should have kept our foot on the gas. Nobody was stopping us but us. Heupel got to conservative that series. Heupel is a very good play caller, but with that much time left with a 10 point lead keep the offense rolling Heup! Way too early to play milk the clock. But great job Vols you kept battling all day. We just need to learn how to keep folks down when we have them down. Shut the door on our opponents. GBO

Our defense has created a lot of turnovers. Arkansas played well. Green is uniquely elusive, and their running back seems like a stud. We're playing with our 1 and 2nd string corners hurt. Defense won the game the 2nd half. I thought Heupel pulled screwed up not being more aggressive with the drive with 6 mins left. Got to be more creative on 3rd down and got to go for it imo on 4th. We end up punting there and they are back where they would have been in like one play and 20 seconds. You get a first down there, and it's almost game over.

We play a crazy fast offense. This forces our defense to be on the field more plays. I see an opportunistic defense that gambles. I think the finger pointing at our defensive coaching staff is ridiculous. They didn't forget how to coach after last year. We could use more quality depth/experience. In today's football, less teams can horde depth.
