It’s the time of year known as the “quiet period” so I thought I would write a light hearted article about things I would LIKE to hear and NOT LIKE to hear in the fall. Please feel free to add your own thoughts or you can e-mail me on londonvol55@gmail.com if you want me to comment on anything. So here goes:

LIKE TO HEAR

Guarantano excels at Washington State – Whilst I’m glad he is not the starter anymore for the Vols (he amazingly had 32 starts) I still wish him well. Like Chandler, he gave his best for Tennessee even if they both came up short in my opinion. Good luck chaps

Hyatt beats To`o To`o on a slant – If I was the OC I just couldn’t resist calling this play against Alabama. In fact I would keep calling it until Saban chokes on his cigar.

The opponents defense are looking anxious as they wait for the call to come in from the sideline - I was continuously shocked during the Pruitt era how the defense were always looking for guidance on what cover they should take and this was from a defensive guru. Oh dear, the signs were there, weren’t they.

Jeremy Pruitt, the ex coach of Tennessee – the word “ex” is short but very important in this statement.

Herby Kirkstreet says "Tennessee have started their long slow climb back to relevance" – safe to safe not our biggest supporter but what fun watching him suck on a lemon.

The Vol Networks Bob Kesling saying “Its football time in Tennessee” – I know people have different opinions on Kesling but for me he has given me access to the theater that is gameday at Tennessee. Many thanks Bob.

There one thing I would like more than to hear Georgia have lost and that is Georgia have lost again. – There is absolutely nothing I like about this lot. They get ridiculous recruiting classes for some reason (cough cough) then they fail to fulfill all that potential, the colors are awful, Smart is anything but and even the dog is ugly. I cant wait to sock it to erm, even if its another Hail Mary.

NOT LIKE TO HEAR

Our first play is a lateral – If you look back over the last few seasons the very first play of the season was always a disaster and the lateral was a common 1st play, after 8 months of building myself up during the summer with “this is the season” the disastrous first plays each year burst my balloon every time. A run straight up the gut against Bowling Green for a gain of 5 yards will be fine for me.

It’s a 3 year rebuild - I’m too tired for that phrase. to be rolled out I know its not fair on “The Huep” but the last 3 Head Coaches have more than used up all my patience. I don’t expect an SEC title or a Play Off Place but I want to see progress this season, however small. We really should win 3 cupcake games, Vandy, SC and Pitt so one of Ken, Ole Miss or Mizz would get us to 7 -5 and that would be fine for the 1st year.

Anything at all from NCAA – We are more than capable of handicapping ourselves, we don’t need help from this lot, especially when what we did is no different than most others, apparently.

The Vol Network: What the heck is “Termite protection”?

We are the underdogs when we play Kentucky – This phrase must stop.

To`o To`o, Morris, Crouch and Lawrence doing well – I know I should be more kind but whilst I do not wish any of them harm such as an ACL tear, I find it hard to wish them well. To`o To`o was a Freshman All American mainly due to the play of Daniel Bituli (what an underrated player he was). Morris and Crouch never delivered close to their potential and Lawrence is a complete mystery. At least Guarantano and Chandler gave their all (see above) but these other guys are a part of the reason where we are on and off the pitch, instead of helping correct the mess they have ran off to further their precious careers.

FINALLY WHAT I WANT TO SEE

Fixing your post - The Vol Networks Bob Kesling finally is fired and is replaced by Mike Keith or the guy who does UT baseball John Wilkerson.

Yeah bowl eligibility would be nothing short of the coaching job of the year considering that this is a 3-7 team that lost a TON of talent.

Some good thoughts and comments.

I would be satisfied with:

1. An exciting and disciplined offense.

2. A defense that's better than expected.

3. I record that's a little better than anticipated. I'm not delusional and not talking about 9 wins or anything of that nature. I just mean one more win than anticipated.

In sum, signs that we're moving in the right direction enough to get fans excited and the media talking.

The Tennessee mods at 247 did a break down comparing the recruiting rankings of this team versus Pruitt's first team. In the majority of the position groups, Pruitt's first team (2018) was higher ranked than the 2021 squad. Hopefully Heupel is a much better coach, and we catch some breaks. Maybe then we can win 6 or 7.

Stopped reading when you mentioned wanting to hear Kesling.

I probably didn't explain myself. In England we get 3 live games each week and usually the only time The Vols are on is the Florida, Georgia and Alabama games (and they have been real fun recently) so during game time I can only get The Vol Network commentary (hence Kesling and Street) and the Box Score on UtSports. You Tube usually load the full game a few hours later. So its Kesling or nothing, now you may understand me better.

I do agree with you that is why I only want to see improvement in year 1 and that can be little or large, just improvement.

Even with the defections, Pruitt left the team with better than average SEC talent.

This year the schedule is a plus for us.

2022 schedule looks good too except for trip to LSU and the usual F/A/G gauntlet of games.

If CJH recruits well then we will probably have some 7-6 to 8-5 seasons the first few years.

We've really been hit harder than some want to believe, like I said above, the 247 mods recently did a breakdown of who we have left and on paper, this team is less talented than Pruitt's first team in the majority of position groups. Heupel is going to need time. We are in a hole. 6 wins would be great this year.

Here is an excerpt of the article from Patrick Brown at Vols247.

"[A]ttrition has hit Tennessee hard, and first-year coach Josh Heupel is inheriting a roster that's without (1) two of the four highest-rated players from the 21st-ranked 2018 class, (2) four of the seven highest-rated players from the 13th-ranked 2019 class, (3) the top-ranked player in the top-10 2020 class and (4) three four-star signees in the 2021 class who were granted releases from their National Letter of Intent."

I can't post the whole thing but it's pretty sobering if you've got a subscription, definitely worth a read. Unreasonable expectations followed by disappointment are part of the vicious cycle we are caught in. I agree with people who say as a matter of course, we should never lose to Kentucky as a program, but we might this year based on who is suiting up for both teams and where it's being played. It is what it is. We can get back to national relevance but we've got to get to consistently decent first. 6-6 would be a good start, considering what we've been through in the last 9 months. If we get more wins, great, but no one needs to be disappointed with 6-6. We can do worse.
