GAME 5 – LSU REVIEW
8TH OCT 2022
Well, 5 batters faced and 5 outs (sorry, wrong sport). Tennessee’s amazing season just got better and better as we just beat our 3rd ranked opponent this season and two of those games were even on the road. But there was also something different about last night’s victory compared to the other two. The wins against Pittsburgh and Florida were absolutely great and we all celebrated accordingly but I also experienced a feeling that though we beat these foes, the games should not have been so close, as we made many unforced errors which stopped us beating them easily. I then told myself: “Don’t be greedy, we just don’t beat these type of teams easily, just be thankful that we won”.
Last night, we not only won, but we also whipped LSU and yes, our performance was that good. I then came to the conclusion that, for years we HOPED to win these games, but now we believe we CAN win these games. This mentality is hard to quantify, hard to coach and hard to implement, but it is real. Look how many times Alabama keeps winning games it has no right to win (last night was the latest example). It is probably because they believe they can win. If one really wants to reach the next level, the component of believing that one will win is vital. And lasts night’s performance showed that we may have found this ingredient.
Let’s highlight in detail some of the reasons why we were so dominant in last night’s game as in truth, the game was not close at all.
Comparisons Let’s review three of the important positions from last night and you will see how much we outplayed LSU. Both Quarterbacks are duel-threat Quarterbacks: Hooker rushed for 56 yards at 5.4 yards per attempt, whilst Jayden Daniels had only 38 yards at 2.4 yards per attempt. The two No 1 Wide Receivers going into the game: Bru McCoy had 140 yards, whilst Kayshon Boutte only had 33 yards. The two nationally regarded Defensive Ends: Byron Young 2 ½ sacks (one of these on a critical 4th down), BJ Ojulari 0 sacks. Just these three comparisons indicate how dominant we were last night.
Defense We all know how good our Offense is and they did not disappoint last night. However, when it comes to our Defense, one gets a little more nervous, not last night. LSU, despite throwing for 300 yards, only scored 13 points and I believe there were four main reasons for this a) we again implemented a policy of ‘bend don’t break’, which usually gives up yards but hopefully not points b) our Run Defense gave up only 2 yards per carry, which was outstanding again c) 5 sacks confirmed how often we got to their Quarterback d) we stopped LSU on 4th down. Kamal Hadden combined for the first stop, Aaron Beasley burst through a gap for the second and Young came up with the 3rd. Each of these were game changers and they all went our way, for once.
Will Brooks. Sorry Will, I have never heard your number mentioned before and as a walk-on you probably also understand that you will not normally be an integral reason for many winning SEC showdowns. But, your recovery of the opening kick off will be shown for years and it should mean you will not be buying beer for some while. As Andy Warhol said: ”In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes”, bask in the glory young man.
The last memory I will keep from this win is not, what I saw, but what I could not see and that was, that from the middle of the 3rd quarter, I could not see many LSU fans. The queues for the ‘Exit’ signs were longer than at the concession stands. I don’t believe anybody predicted that before the game, but that’s what happens when your team is whipping the opponent in their own back yard.
A View from Big Ben always enjoy your comments and observations.
