GAME 3 – Georgia

After losing the last 4 home games against Jawja by an average of 41-10, to lose like The Vols did last night should be regarded as a “moral victory” but the way we lost it felt much more of a “heartbreaking loss” to me, but it is important to remember it is only a game especially in the light of the tragic events regarding Charlie Kirk this week,

I try not to read others’ opinions on the game until after I write my report so as to keep my initial thoughts authentic. Well I hope there is not too much criticism of Shamurad Umarov and Max Gilbert. Umarov’s false start was just about the dumbest penalty I have seen since ‘I found’ the Vols in 2009, but please remember it will hurt him so much especially after he played so well. Gilbert’s miss will haunt him for some time as well and I thought at the time leading up to the kick the moment might be too big for him and sadly I was right. But I did think he showed he has a pair of Kahunas the way he nailed a replica 42 yarder in O/T, well done young man, keep that head up, there are more big moments coming down the pipeline..

QUARTERBACKS A

The concern that Joey Aguilar has never faced an SEC team was put to bed with 371 yards 4 TD’s and 2 INT’s. I have repeatably written this guy is a “baller” and so he is. Yes Negavols will highlight the INT’s but firstly Braylon Staley slipped on one and the only bad one was throwing into double coverage (that was my concern that doing it last week against an FCS team it might encourage him to think it’s OK) but this type of QB takes chances and the two jump ball TD’s would never have happened under a more cautious QB. I’ll take the rough with the smooth any day.

RUNNING BACKS C
It has been almost universally thought this season that Star Thomas was the best back we have with Georgia being the acid test and he passed it. Whilst I like the DeSean Bishop story and he is dependable, one of the biggest failures of the coaching staff last night was that Bishop had 15 carries and Thomas only 9, Furthermore Bishop was trusted to gain a few extra yards for the fateful kick and maybe Thomas would have got Gilbert closer? Peyton Lewis doesn’t quite look ready at this level yet, however I still think he will do well on Knoxville before he leaves.

WIDE RECEIVERS A+
Chris Brazzell will get the headlines as you would expect when you have 177 yards and 3 TDs against the Dawgs, and he was a revelation, so much so I wonder if Rick Barnes might want to sign him for Rebounding. But I was more impressed with Staley, he is someone who hasn’t garnered the publicity of others in the WR room but he made play after play last night and to think he is a R-FR there is no need for Boo Carter in the slot. Mike Matthews also had a good game although I believe he might have got banged up at one point.

TIGHT ENDS C-
Good old dependable Miles Kitselman came up with 3 catches and 33 yards, but Ethan Davis failed again to register a catch and from the one target he had he failed to corral it even if it might have got the faintest tip, he needs to win these battles.

OFFENSIVE LINE A+
What another great performance from the O’Line. The stats that Aguilar was Sacked only once and QBH only once is testament to what a wall they put up thus also providing the time for those long fruitful bomb routes to mature. This is all in the absence of the talisman David Sanders. This is another reason why I don’t was Volnation to castigate Umarov, he contributed well to this department on the night. A special mention to Glen Elerbee, we have all read how he can’t develop Offensive Lineman and no scholarship players signed by him have started before this season, well you can put all that in the bin.

DEFENSIVE LINE B

I was most concerned that with the lack of bodies we would not be able to stop the run and 198 yards are a lot, but it was from 55 carries at only 3.6 y.p.c. Bryson Eason (already banged up) and Dom Bailey might struggle to bend down and put there socks on this morning due to the amount of playing time they put in. Possibly the player of the game could be awarded to Caleb Herring. Now he was highly regarded in recruiting but he has been overshadowed by the likes of James Pearce, Joshua Josephs and even Jordan Ross during his time on Rocky Top. Well no more, after a stat line of 1½ sacks, 2½ TFLs and 1 QHB. To quote John McClane in Die Hard “welcome to the party pal”

LINEBACKERS D
I might even mark this lower. Arion Carter, whilst he has all the measurable s to be an All American he just seems to be running around but not really delivering, added to an INT that went through his hands it was not a good night. The promise people keep saying he has, but when is he going to deliver all that undoubted potential? But Jeremiah Teleander worries me more. His job is to fill a great big hole in the middle, plug gaps where there are in front of him and deliver crunching tackles, he seems to do none of these at this level. He is another who is lauded but this was our biggest weakness area last night for me

DEFENSIVE BACKS C
I know Ty Redmond had a tough night (I thought the Georgia WR pushed off for the game trying TD although Brazzell did the same to be fair) but he never hid and produced a couple of big plays late on. This was a big learning curve night for him, and he will be better for it going forward. I still think he has NFL Draft Day One potential. They never went near Colton Hood which shows the reputation he has garnered already. A mention to Edrees Farooq who continues to “lay the wood” in the secondary, he has become a nice surprise this season.

FINAL THOUGHT
If you want to sum up how good we were last night just replay Kirby Smarts interview immediately after the game, he was absolutely shell shocked and was struggling to explain what he had just witnessed, he knew he got out of jail. I fear we just may have missed the playoffs last night as Tennessee can only afford to lose 2 games and with Alabama, Florida and Mississippi St away and Oklahoma (maybe the SEC champions this season) at home, its gonna be tough to get to 10-2, but that aside, what an amazing game American Football is, there is no other sport to rival it on this planet.

Well, LV, you're spot-on with your summary of this game. This might be the most painful loss sice 2001 (though all of 'em suck). Anyone who thinks GA isn't a top 5 team is blind, as are ones who think the Vols don't belong on the same field with other elite teams. I really feel bad for Gilbert; he makes that field goal 99% of the time. 😎

I think we needed that win last night. You're right, we can only afford two losses to get into the playoffs and our schedule is looking much more difficult than last year. In addition to the teams you listed, Arkansas and Vanderbilt both look tougher than they have in the past. It will be a brutal challenge to go 9-3. I think 10-2 is very unlikely

That might have been our best shot at a marquee rival win this year. We just never beat Alabama or Florida in their house, no matter how bad they are. 9-3 would be a good year based on our initial expectations but it would feel somewhat hollow without beating at least one of those teams.

Seems to me the linebackers have too much field to cover. If the cornerbacks could land a tackle, we would have beat Georgia by 30.

Great write up London Vol. I feel so bad for the team and fans. We gave max effort but needed a few more plays/stops. One comment on RBs I think it’s time for Star to be RB #1. Bishop is a great story and a good runner but he cannot catch a cold out of the backfield. We needed those swing passes to be positive plays, and it’s been that way 3 weeks. The rest of the year will be very competitive and we need more for the offense to be its best.

One of Joey's int's was on 3rd down and luckily the defender went to the ground, effectively just making it the same as a punt. Not a great punt, but a punt nonetheless.

I don't think we lose another game in the regular season if people stay healthy. UGA is the toughest team we're gonna face and we let victory slip through our fingers. We may yet get another shot at UGA.

Bama at Bama will be a tough matchup and even though we should throttle UF, we just struggle against them on the road. But I still feel that we are solidly better than every remaining team. And luckily we get OU at home.

Offense, the run lanes finally opened in the second half. I dont think the o line was as good on run blocking as they were on pass protect. I would like to see more targets on the TE when we need some 2nd and longs conversions.
The offense did its typical disappearing act in the second qtr, but I was excited that they shook it off (they didn't in previous games GA getting run over after the 1st qtr.). That offensive response alone gives me hope. We responded to georgia in the 2nd half in a great back and fourth and should have won. As many figured, BoBo was holding back play calling but I respect that he kept running the ball. Full credit to QB gunner making a great throw for that last TD.
Defense
I dont understand how we can have so many starters out and many tn fans act like we should have killed them. My issue with the defense was tackling. If they tackled better then we get more 3 and outs. Agree the LBs had a rough game. They had some strong moments. The stat on less than 4 yds a carry shows that they were holding them but they would give up a chunk run and then hold them to no gain only to give up another chunk run. That was very frustrating. I believe that as we get healthy we can get stronger on defense.

Coach owned the conservative play call so I'll move on. I wish Star would have gotten the carries at that moment so I fully agree with you on the only 9 carries as being criminal.

The little things added up to loss. Up 8 and we should have won. Oh well, just keep getting better.

I did find it odd that evey time we made a play on defense they talked about their hurt players but didn't mention our hurt players beyond corner backs.
Just keep playing with a chip on your shoulders. Get healthy and we can make a push.

Great recap, agree on almost every point. I did think the RBs graded a bit higher but Star is exactly that.

D line was a C for me although given injuries they held up as well as you could have hoped. Just not seeing the control of the LOS we saw out of last years group. We are going backwards at the point of attack vs. holding ground or getting penetration. This could also be on the LBs a bit too. So interdependent I’d have to re-watch.

LBs - spot on. Poor tacking. Bad angles. Not what I would have expected, even against the talent UGA has.

On one of the interceptions the receiver slipped down making his cut. And who wouldn't be nervous trying your first ever game winning field goal and it meaning you also end an eight game losing streak to a team.

SPOT ON !!!
1000 percent agree with everything you wrote.
I too still scratch my head at the lack of RB play especially when our OL was pushing like they were.
