A united fan base

I'm sure we've all heard you can't please everyone all the time. The reality is you are going to always have people with unrealistic expectations and lack understanding of the challenges when it is based off false pretenses like "recruiting rankings". On the flip side you will have some with low expectations that don't demand more.

To many in the fanbase have the battered woman syndrome, are just naturally negative or don't like the staff to begin with. Losing early provides an opportunity for them to say "I told you so".

There were several of us that saw the talent level at the end of last year and knew it is going to take some time. Jones recruited some really good players over the years but he also ran off many of the better ones or they left early. His rankings we based on quantity. Something was off with his staff's evaluations. He didn't recruit enough speed on defense especially at CB, pass rushers or size in the middle.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you but are you saying battered woman syndrome is like the other two descriptions? I don't mean this in a SJW offensive way, I mean are you saying battered woman syndrome is being negative?

Those are three different reasons. What I mean is we have been a losing program for so long with bad hires that people automatically push the panic button like here we go again. The reality is every coaching change means we are starting over. I'm sure playing a game against the sisters of the poor like most SEC teams yesterday would've made many feel better but I think yesterday's game against a quality opponent gives the staff a chance to really evaluate who can help us win.

The reason I asked is I don't associate "battered women/spouse syndrome" with the other 2 or being negative. If anything, I would associate it with sunshine pumpers because those with battered spouse syndrome make excuses and defend those that are hurting them.

But I agree with what you're saying.

Got it. Makes sense.

What will it take to unite our fan base?

I look at teams that have made strides toward championship level football, and it appears everyone is pulling in the same direction including the fans. Why is our fan base so fickle?

I see so many post about we suck, our coaches suck, players suck etc...why? Because a new coaching staff, and a new system didn’t win its first game? I am not sure about the rest of you, but I feel that is totally unrealistic. We were a bad team last year and that can’t be undone in 20 practices. Learning to win is a skill, and it has to be taught. It is learned in games.

What will it take this season for you to fully support this team and staff? They have my support because they “ Give their all for Tennessee”. Am I happy we lost? Absolutely not, but I am also aware that knee jerk reactions do not help achieve a goals.

Maybe I am just too much of an optimist, but I saw plenty of things to look forward to.

If you ever study impromptu plays, acting and such, the main key to success is constant agreement. It will be difficult to have a united fanbases when people either
- cherry pick stats to try to prove we are good when we are clearly not.
- base arugments of future prosperity based on nothing more than Go Big Orange.

We simply are not good and people will disagree as to why we are not good.

However, we only give the appearance of not being united in online discussions and such. For the most part, the large major of this fanbase has stood by this disaster of a football program. Packing neyland and BMS, mid teir bowls etc. Buying gear and donating money. I live in Alabama and saw at least 4 people wearing vols gear where i was at last night well after the game. We all want the same thing. So to unite the fanbase will only be done by..

-winning
- not fielding a team of horrible human beings.

I understand what you're thinking. If you and I are thinking of the same schools when discussing programs where players, staff, administration, fans and boosters are "all in", the uniting factor is pretty much universally a home run hire at head coach. With all respect to Pruitt, UTAD did not make a home run hire. UTK has the money, but won't spend it on the one thing that could unite us all. It makes me wonder if the administration really is "all in". Pruitt faces the same chicken / egg conundrum that has faced other head coaches. He needs us to be all in in order to generate the enthusiasm and momentum that it will take to contend for the division, conference, and maybe more, but a lot of us are not going to go all in for another uninspiring head coaching hire until we see some big wins. Personally, I don't see any way that he can possibly succeed here, nor because he's a bad coach but because the burden of the past 10-15 years of our history imposes an urgency that he simply lacks the gravitas to quell.
