A triple down the Memphis line

Great players don't go to Ole Miss, Arkansas, or Mississippi State, in general.
Knoxville Linebacker DD Lewis was a 2 time All SEC 1966-1967 and was SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 1967 for Mississippi State. DD Lewis is in the College Football Hall of Fame. DD Lewis played for the Dallas Cowboys from 1968-1981. Jackie Parker from was from Knoxville ,played for Mississippi State and was All SEC 1952-1953. Jackie Parker is in the College Football Hall of Fame. General Neyland didn't recruit Jackie Parker because he was married.

It's a numbers game, Memphis/West TN has a larger population than does East Tennessee. It's been double dumb to NOT make recruiting there a priority. Demographics alone say there are more D1 players in West TN than East TN.
Always been that way til maybe recently it's maybe evened out a little more in middle Tn. They've move here in droves. Plenty of Highschools being built as we speak and more coming. Not sure i like it all that much, but the talent pool is increasing all over the state due to the influx of new people. My property taxes are stupid now..

In my opinion, and I have been watching Tenn football since abut 1959..............the most dominant players from West Tenn without a doubt for Tenn was Running back Johnny Jones from Munford Tenn (right outside of Memphis) and linebacker Al Wilson from Jackson Tenn.............However, Cedrick Wilson wide receiver was mighty good too, from Memphis Tn.

Because in '59 if someone went into your house uninvited and you shot them, you did exactly what you were supposed to... Now days you might go to prison.
............Wrong.........because I worked in the second largest prison in Tennessee for 18 year !!!!! I know what I am talking about !!! Doubt you would go to prison now days if you could afford a big time lawyer !!! But don't come in my house uninvited. Nor do I have the money to hire a big time lawyer !

What was the great linbacker from Jackson Tenn..........Al Wilson ??? Doesn't sound right but close ...........Trey Smith from Jackson Tenn. Several good Vol football players from West Tenn...............lots more if they would be recruited. However, everybody thinks all the good football is played in the East Tenn area..............WRONG ! Greg Emerson who plays now is from Jackson Tn.
Marsalis Teague would have been a game changer for the Vols...but coach put him on defense. One of the most prolific offensive players in Tennessee high school history.

TN had no married student housing then. A friend’s Dad transferred from ND to TN and was an accomplished OL. Unfortunately he fathered a child his junior year, got married and was booted from the program - ended up at MTSU. The child was my friend, this was 1957.

Vonn Bell wasn't a Vol because Dooley didn't recruit him. Just that simple. I remember an article in the Times Free Press about him right before signing day. He publicly had narrowed it down to Ohio St, Alabama, and Tennessee. Butch had just taken over and was recruiting him hard. They asked him what he thought about the previous staff, and he said he hadn't communicated with any of them.

That kid really, really wanted to come to Tennessee, but Dooley + staff didn't show a lick of interest in him.
Actually Dooley offered when he was a sophomore which was his first big offer. Dooley just didn’t give him mad love which was his way with everybody and bell fell out of love.

To all Vol fans in the Knoxville area........Memphis is from the extreme western part of the State of Tenn all the way to the extreme eastern part of the state. It takes me literally all day to get from Reelfoot Lake (Lake County Tenn) to Knoxville. This is why all the players from West Tenn go to Ole Miss, Memphis, Arkansas, Alabama, Miss State..............they are all closer to West Tenn than is Knoxville !!!! ............For example, I can be in the States of Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, and nearly Alabama within 45min. to an hour from my home at Reelfoot Lake. I am literally 30 mins. from Kentucky. Missouri, as a crow flies, right across the Mississippi River about 30 mins to cross the river. So........yall have an idea why we lose players to other schools. I can be in Starkville Miss much quicker than I can be in Knoxville Tenn. Ole Miss and Miss State are in Memphis Tenn backyard. As a matter of fact one would never know when he leaves Memphis Tenn and enters Southaven Miss. or Memphis Tenn and enters West Memphis Arkansas , which is literally across a bridge.

Way off the mark Sissy Post. Grow a set..

Patrick Willis out of Bruceton begged to play at UT even reportedly willing to walk on if just given a chance. Powers that be told him to take his less than up to snuff West TN football skills elsewhere. He did, became an All SEC, Consensus AA Linebacker at Ole Miss. Became a 1st round draft choice to the NFL's SF 49ers where he reaped All Pro honors as well. Those little schools in West TN just can't produce players can they? How about Al Wilson?
Willis was offered the opportunity to walk on at ut for a year and then get a ship. Patrick was a foster child who needed a full ride and Fulmer called cutcliffe and told him to take a look at Patrick and the rest is history. It was by far the best move for Willis because the environment at ole miss was better for him than the large school one at ut

Not close Doug Atkins from humbolt was one of the top 50 in both the NCAA and the nfl.

I went to high school with Ronald Davis (Bartlett) he was a straight up baller. He was our best football and basketball player. Trey Teague from Jackson was another very good vol from West TN. Had a nice pro career as well.

I also went to Bartlett with Ronald Davis.....

Earnest Fields was from Milan.

Chad Clifton was from Martin.

Two pretty good ball players right there.

Not surprised one iota !!!

But there are exceptions.
Yeah, that is what they said about Patrick Willis from Bruceston Tn. who played for Ole Miss.............just because he played on a Single A football nobody thought he was any good. That is why he was All SEC and an All Pro. Lots of single A players who have gone on to play in the Canadian Football league from Tenn.............several From Humboldt Tn, Lake Co. Tn.....Ronald Hopkins who played for The Calgary Stampeaders was one of the best to play the game. The NFL tried to get his from Canada and he told them to forget it because he could not afford to take a pay cut.
