A tailgating journey through the SEC

The Vol Navy doesn’t get enough credit.

Folks around the SEC know how to tailgate. Someone’s tailgate will be over the top at every game. It’s an awesome part of sport’s pageantry.

There is a lot of class and sophistication about Athens

Before the first expansion it was UK for me. The game was always at night on Breeders Cup weekend. We would go to Keenland, bet the ponies, get liquored up, then head to Commonwealth for the game.

I’ve been to every SEC stadium except Missouri, Mississippi State and Arkansas. The best looking women in the SEC are from:

1) Ole Miss
2) Tennessee
3) Kentucky
4) The women on both sides at a Florida-Georgia game.

Mizzou and State are 12 and 13 IMO (only ahead of Vandy). Arky ain't bad...

LSU is always an interesting tailgating spot and they're friendly until they enter Tiger Stadium.:D

I have to agree, LSU is probably the best. You can go walking through the tailgating areas and someone will yeah out "Hey Tennessee, come over heah and git sum gumbo." (Sorry, I can't type that Cajun accent.) South Carolina was OK. Auburn is ok if you know someone with a close-in parking spot, otherwise you have to walk past those apartment buildings they have instead of men's dorms and all the drunks want to yell at you.

Ole Miss is all about having that great area for tailgating, not so much the people if you're a visitor and they think they have a chance to win. Who the hell would want to go to Starkville? Cowbells! Would imagine A&M could be pretty good. At Vandy I just hit a bar on the way to the stadium and besides it's all Tennessee fans there anyway. With Kentucky, except for the rare win, we've so dominated them in football that they just don't have the energy to give you a hard time and just figure to wait until BB season. That's why it so kills them when we do win at Rupp.

NFW I'm going to a game at Florida, not unless they allow me to take my S&W with me. Those people are pigs.

Not going to Tuscaloosa, mainly because I just don't want to set foot on that campus. Will never forget this story. A couple of decades ago the UT/ Bama game would be played in Birmingham at the old Legion Field when Bama was the home team and since I had friends in Birmingham I would occasionally go to that game. The neighborhood was older, working class homes and by the late 80's had gotten pretty run down. I couldn't go the year Peyton Manning broke an extended losing streak for us so I gave my tickets to a friend. A lot of homeowners near the stadium would let you park your car in their yard for $20 so he did that and was walking to the stadium. Some 70 year old woman is sitting out on her porch and sees him in his Tennessee shirt. She stands up, flips him the bird and yells "F--- Tennessee." Total class. I can imagine what her grandkids were like.

I've said for several years now that if I found out I had a terminal disease, I'd rent a twin engine plane, fill it up with gunpowder (since I don't know how to buy dynamite) and fly it into the Alabama bench while the game was going on. I know, not very classy either, but it would give my death a purpose.

The best I've ever been treated at an away game was at Alabama, and it's every time I've been. I don't hate Tuscaloosa or that campus. Ole Miss was great as well. LSU was treated pretty bad same with Georgia and Kentucky. Non-SEC Virginia Tech has a nice game day experience and good size tailgates.

Does your tailgating include strippers and stripper poles? If not, meh.

Oh wait, I was thinking about the after party. Nevermind.
Plenty of food and drinks, and laughs. This may be the year I break out the poles though. Think we could do that g10t?

Hey WBO - I forgot to hit + quote when I was cutting your quotes not relative to Birmingham & Tuscaloosa so that’s why the quote format looks a little different .
2 funny / cool story bro’s about Birmingham. I will say that I attended the ‘07 game which was a total shocker as we were heavily favored but from the opening onside kick recovery by Bama until the final whistle was complete domination. Other than that we had a great time & everybody was really cool, much better experience than Birmingham although much more sterile & with less personality.

I remember going with my grandparents to the ‘89 game, which possibly cost Volnation & The late-great Coach Majors a NC. We did the ol’ “$20 park in my yard “ and if we weren’t disappointed enough by the game outcome the fact that somebody had stolen my the hubcaps off of my grandparents brand new ‘89 Brougham rubbed some more salt in the wound. My grandfather & I were also @ the ‘95game to see that streak end. This time we parked in a huge field that was a little more closely supervised . It took 2 hours to get on the road but we didn’t care.

Last cool story bro is that I think this same grandfather of mine may have had an encounter with the mother or grandmother of the classy old lady who dropped the F bomb on your buddy. In 1969 my mother was within weeks of giving birth to her firstborn child/ my older brother . My grandmother who went to basically every home & away game with my grandfather from 1964-1995 did not want to leave my mother behind alone as my father was serving in the Army overseas. He sold his tickets . Early that morning as he started seeing people heading out to Birmingham he decided he couldn’t miss this game &so he called a buddy & they went down ticketless. No tickets could be found but he bribed a ticket taker & he let them in , told them they could attempt to blend in on TN sideline & if anybody said anything that they were on their own. They just acted like they belonged & so nobody said a word & they got to witness a total TN beat down of Bama to the tune of 41-14. At the end of the game everybody from TN was whooping it up leaving the stadium and some classy old dentally challenged lady Gump says “ Go to hell Tennessee “.... my grandfather , ever the quick wit said “Ma’am it appears as if we have already arrived. After all are we not in Birmingham?”

That was also the day of some of Steve Kiners most infamous chit talking about how they should be ashamed of themselves for letting down The Bear. I have some funny direct quotes that my grandfather heard Kiner say to both the Bama players & to coach Bryant himself but this post is long enough as it stands 😁. I’m sure most of the older guys have already heard most of them but if anyone wants to hear alleged direct quotes I will gladly share.
