A simple question for CBJ doubters - replace Butch with:

so he gained 2 years in one?

Jake Bentley

Opelika, AL (Opelika)

Pro-Style Quarterback

Ht 6-4
Wt 223
Age 19 yrs 10 mo
Exp 2016 - ...

Fact, he was a high school junior in the spring of 2016. Are you saying as a 17-18 year old, he was older Redshirt Junior in Orth? Just for the record, lets get that straight? You still haven't answered that.

Possibly. Think Brent Venables and Jim Leavitt would also be strong candidates to replace Snyder.

KSU is Patterson's alma mater. I don't know enough about him to say if he'd go coach there or not. Some coaches dream of coaching their alma mater, but some go where the money is at, so who knows. Curious if anyone has any insight on this.

How many times has a Butch Jones team beaten a Muschamp team? I mean that SC team was terrible last year but what happened? They beat us with a HS QB making his first EVER collegiate start. Laugh at Mason all you want but he proved last year he is the better coach. You were probably one of those UT fans that laughed at Franklin as well.

Whats dumb about some Tennessee fans is the lenghts at which some will go to defend Butch Jones as a great coach. He has done nothing up to this point, to solidify himself as a great coach.

But hey, this is my opinion and you are free to have yours.

How many times did Spurrier beat Butch? He was also coaching a top 10 team that lost to a 5-7 UT coached Butch team. So you would take Butch over Spurrier? Interesting.

Mason has a losing record to Butch, applying ur logic Butch is better, stop being double minded.

Nope, I like franklin, did while he was at Vandy, would take him over Butch and nearly any other coach any day of the week. Nice assumptions though

Also, Bentley wasn't making his first ever start, he also was about to turn 19. He was held back in junior high because his dad was a coach and wanted him to develop more before Varsity. He made up extra credit to graduate "early", he was always supposed to be a Freshman in college last year, his dad just knew how to bend the rules. At least get it right, thanks.

My list in no particular order:

Bobby Petrino
Les Miles
Lincoln Riley
Bret Veneables
James Franklin
Chip Kelly
Clay Helton
Jimbo Fisher

He was a high school QB at best. We had 2 weeks to prepare for him and we knew who would be available on our roster to play. There is no defending that loss and blaming it on injuries.

Pretty good point. I would take Saban, Mullen, Malzahn and Smart over Jones. Crazy to think he is possibly in the top 3rd of SEC Coaches. I guess that explains the parity in recent years versus the previous decade of dominance

Pretty good list. Mullen and Saban for sure for me. Malzahn maybe, I need to see more from Smart, he's still a huge ?.

Sec coaches are definitely terrible as a whole, pretty crazy considering all the talent in the south. You would think elite coaches would be lining up at the door

When did I ever defend the loss?! I said he was wrong about Bentley, and he was... Just like you were haha

My biggest wish is that Butch has an undefeated season, wins the SEC, and takes the team to the playoffs. Then there is no need for new coach talk. But if it comes down to it and I had to choose, I would choose Chip Kelly. Or Jon Gruden :)

I know Petrino is considered a pos, but I wanted him 5 years ago and nothings changed. If he can win at Arkansas and Louisville, there is no doubt, imo, he can win bigger at Tennessee

I want Butch Jones to be ultra successful here. I wan him to win championships at Tennessee. I am just not sold on he can do it.

The whole point surrounding Bentley was that he was a high school QB making his first SEC start against us. And that's true.

I'm going NFL. Possibly new England's def coordinator. Possibly Rex Ryan. Give me more time and I could add many more nfl coordinators to that list. Bottom line, I'm not messing around with these college guys. I'm going NFL for UT's next head coach

Ok, so his dad was a coach that held him back a year to make him better. I gave you the link to his current profile on 247 that has his current age.

from GamecocksOnline:
http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/jake_bentley_1021392.html

PERSONAL: Jacob L. Bentley was born Nov. 23, 1997... is an exercise science major... father, Bobby, is Carolina’s running backs coach and previously was a highly-successful high school coach at Byrnes (S.C.) and at Presbyterian College... Jake’s step-brother, Chas Dodd (Rutgers), and brother, Schuler Bentley (ODU/Murray State), both have started at quarterback in college.

PERSONAL: Brandon McIlwain was born May 31, 1998... is pursuing a degree in political science... hopes to obtain a joint MBA/JD degree... father, Roddy, was born in Columbia and is a South Carolina graduate... grandmother lives in Irmo.

you tell me

You said he was 17 and younger than Mcllwain. He wasn't. Again, he was never a HS QB last year. He was always gonna graduate early because his dad bent the rules while he was younger. He wasn't some 16 year old that had barely payed HS football at a high level. He was an 18 year old(soon to be 19 year old) That was always supposed to graduate at that time. Maybe you should re-read my comment to understand Bentley better and how it worked.
By your logic every college freshman is a Highschooler lol

Fuentes seems like a reasonable candidate, and a solid coach.

But hopefully Butch has great success here and this is all just conjecture.

TEE-CHIP-J GRUDAMANNING!!!!!!!!!

Butch couldn't scrub the stains outta his jock strap! Time to put a REAL coach up on tha hill!

The question is this:
If you could put any SEC coach at the helm at UT, with the exception of Nick Saban, who would it be and why? (The why is important).

My intent on this post is to show that we are not so much different than any other fan base in the SEC ( with the exception of Bama).

Candidates for discussion are:

  1. Arthur Gustavo "Gus" Malzahn, III - Auburn
  2. Bret Bielema - Arkansas
  3. Jim McElwain - Florida
  4. Mark Stoops - Kentucky
  5. Ed Orgeron - LSU
  6. Dan Mullen - Mississippi State
  7. Barry Odom - Missouri
  8. Hugh Freeze - Ole Miss
  9. Will Muschamp - South Carolina
  10. Kevin Sumlin - Texas A&M
  11. Derek Mason - Vanderbilt
  12. Kirby Smart - Georgia

So now you have a chance to quit B*ching and replace our coach with any of these guys!

Mullen.

But my real choice would be Fuente.

Dan Mullen, for sure, if I'm picking out of the SEC.

Kyle Whittingham or Justin Fuente would be my first two picks outside of the SEC

On my "notable mentions" would be:
Mike Bobo @ Colorado state
DJ Durkin @ Maryland

Annddddd....

Bo Pelini @ Youngstown state. (Guy never won less than 9 games at Nebraska in his 6 seasons there, won 3 BIG12 divisional championships and 1 BIG10 division championship, just went 12-4 at Youngstown state with an FCS championship game appearance in only his 2nd season with the team) He might be a peckerhead, but he can coach football.

I'm gonna go with dark horse here, D4H.

He's a coach that will never back track, has an eye for spotting talent, keeping reasonable expectation, and giving better interviews (I actually would agree with this part).

Based on results Mullen or Mason.

Cracks me up when people say anyone can recruit at UT. That's what Dooley thought. Anyone can recruit a top 30 class. An average recruiter gets a top 20 class. It takes a great recruiter to get a top ten class.

We all love Tennessee and see only positives. Recruits from other states see Tennessee as it is. Nice stadium when viewing from a players prospective. Great training facilities. Good looking campus but not the best. New dorm and practice facility. Good academics with wide range of career options. Best coaching staff in..uh wait don't look behind the curtain. The truth is if your NFL bound their are better places to go. If you want to be a Champion of Life UT us a very good choice. Credit Butch for adding this. Sounds stupid to most fans but it is important to families. Moms and Dads know most kid will not get to the NFL.

Butch has done an above average job recruiting here and with a name brand staff will do better. He knows what kids like and sells UT to them. Third down songs and trash cans work wonders.

Is there anyone on the list that could recruit better? Ed O for a while. Perhaps Sumlin or Mason.

Mullen, does more with less. It's the obvious answer!! Don't get me wrong I'm fully behind bUTch just speaking hypothetically.

GO VOLS!!!!!
BEAT THOSE Gators!!!!!

Yes Mullen and staff are developing better than Butch and former staff. But if Butch recruits better it can be a wash. Two ways to get to the same place.
