A Shot of Jack

I have a personal tradition, I bet at least a few of you share it with me: drink a shot (or two) of Jack just before kickoff of every Vols game.

Then, if the game goes badly, I tend to drink several more shots during and after the game, heh. We can call that a tradition too, I guess. :)

Anyway, I know we're not playing today, but we might have. And so I'm sitting here before a dark-screen TV, sipping some Jack neat, in honor of the lads who are headed out to practice, something they believe in, Tennessee football, after an afternoon marching for something else they believe in. Proud of those young men, and our coaches.

If you're drinking tonight as well, salut. Slanche. Prost. Cheers. Go Vols.
I do the same, but with Ole Smokey Whiskey!!

I have a buddy of mine who purchased a bottle of Pappy when Tennessee won the national championship in ‘98. It is still unopened as he promised himself he would drink it the next time Tennessee won a national Championship. As you can see here a 1998 vintage Pappy Van Winkle goes for about $20,000 a bottle now: 1998 Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year Old Green Tint bottle 750ml. I love my Vols and all but I would be selling that bad boy .

Played football and basketball. Gave up baseball when I was a sophomore, even though that was probably my best sport. Trying to think of some the guys' names I played against.......Warner Tomes, Tim Turner, Dwight Peppers, Terry Moore, Richard Whitaker, and a slew of others that I can't remember. Seems like there was a Crutchfield as well. Maybe a Frankie Johnson. Dated a couple of T-town gals as well........
Yeah, man. I saw Warner the other day. He's doing fine. The rest, I haven't seen in a long time, but I know everyone you named. Well, except Frankie Johnson, I don't remember that name. We did have some Crutchfields in town, but I didn't know any of them well.

Small world. *salute*

What year did you graduate Tullahoma? I graduated FCHS, class of 1978. Play sports? I played several sports against some really good athletes from Tullahoma back in the day.

Yes, Dickel and Sun Drop was and still is...........a classic. Down at the Blue Gill Grill on Tims Ford Lake (the old Awalt Community on Little Hurricane Creek) they sell "Dickel Drops." Frozen slushie made of Dickel and Sun Drop.
i used to crappie fish around the boats at Holiday Marina. No boat, just fish in the corners. There was a guy ( Marv Charleston?) That ran the shop. He would buy fish and keep them on ice for guys to swing by and purchase to prove to their wives they'd been out fishing. 😊 My wife can hardly believe my Tennessee tales. But, there is no need to make up stories! Any of you guys old enough to remember Joe Ricco's?

Joe Ricco? That wasn't the guy that lived right off the main boulevard and sold moonshine out his house is it?

Never forget the Memphis State game of 1984. A friend and I sat in the 2nd half downpour and drank a pint of Jack, straight, and then ran out onto the field after the game. No one gave a damn because almost everyone had gone by then. Fun times...until I rolled up into the Fort and saw that my car had been hit while parked....

Just one shot five minutes before kickoff. Then when we score or punt ...and whenever a play is over. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters are always available on DVR.

I was pretty young and only went into the joint one time to pick up pizza. I did hear those rumors, though!😊 Heavenly pizza as I recall. There was a story of his son, Joe jr., - an Eagle scout, who got lost in some caves beneath Tullahoma for a few days. (Didn't mean to imply I was a Ricco's regular! My brother-in-law was the designated pizza picker-upper) 😁)

I also am from Tullahoma. Little older than you guys. I was a Ricco guy at times. And worked at Holiday Marina for the original owners in early to mid 70's. Small world. And Sun Drop. I used to take cases back to Knoxville and sell for premium price because it wasn't available there.

I saw an interesting show about whiskey, scotch in particular. The CEO of Glenmorange said that after 12 years, whiskies typically don't noticeably improve. He said the reason they go up so dramatically in price is not quality, but the fact that there is just less supply of that particular vintage. I believe him. My non-scientific blind taste test with my friends/family resulted in Jim Beam finishing second to 5 other high-priced whiskies, including Blanton's, Angel's Envy, and Four Roses (can't remember the other two, but all but Beam were priced over $50). I prefer Jim Beam Black, but now drink premium tequila more often than whisky. No aftereffects and great taste. Preferred tequillas: Don Julio Reposado and Anejo, Casamigos Reposado and Anejo, and El Mayor Reposado are among my favs.

Don Julio is the best on the market IMO. Working for Virginia ABC stores for 7 years that and Cabo Wabo and Casamigos are my top 3. A great midshelf tequila is El Jimador.
