A Serious Concern

I'll send money to help...even the obviously biased CBS announcers (Unbelievably unprofessional) talked about how our DBs were playing "soft". Good grief, I could have completed passes the whole second half with the yardage our DBs were playing back off the ball!

The announcers (who I agree were totally pulling for UK) actually commented a number of times during the second half about how soft the UT D'Backs were playing. UK receivers were wide open all day long. Why is it the entire world, or at least Vol Nation can see it plain as day, yet our coaches can't. Do they not look at films? It doesn't take a genius to figure out where we are getting killed. Tennessee D'Backs...DISGUSTING, INFURIATING!

I'm not going to defend the secondary, but, using one school of football logic, here is why our DB's cosistently play soft, and yes, they are TOLD to do it. AS you know, Berry has proven himself this year as a Freshman. The rest of the secondary.... hmmm. Very young, except for a disappointing Hefney. So, what do you do as a defensive coordinator? You certainly don't want to give up big play after big play. So, you have your inexperienced guys stay off the line so that the receiver will be hard pressed to get behind them. Then you pray like hell that your d-line can get back to the QB and if they can't get a sack, at least disrupt him. Unfortunately, like in yesterday's game, once the d-line is gassed and can't even get a little pressure on the QB, it's 10-15 yds at will. With a good QB like Woodson it's almost like would you rather him pick you apart 5-15 yds at a time, or let him do it in 30+ yard chunks. What gets me is out lack of depth in the d-line department. If you are going to have our guys play soft to defend against the big play, we need to substitute on the D-line more to get fresh legs in the game in the 3rd and 4th quarter so we can get the needed pressure on the quarterback.

Personally, I would like to see tighter coverage, but I understand why it is being done the way it is...

I think both the defensive calls and the offensive strategy focuses on playing not to lose rather than playing to win in the second half. By not "going for more" we allow the opponent to stay in the game, or to inch ever closer and the next thing you know, we're up to our eyeballs in it.

I would like to issue a personal plea to our coaches to just go balls to the wall in both halves Saturday and send LSU home while we order Southeastern Conference championship rings!!!!!!!

I agree 100%.. I dont get why the coaches cant see this.

Apparently Fulmer sees it because he made a comment about it earlier in the season. What I dont understand is why he hasnt done anything ti fix it ?

If I see one of our DB's in Atlanta playing ten yards off when they only need five yards for a first or worse a score, I am going to have to run onto the field and grab a face mask.
Maybe Volnation can raise my bail money. Any help is appreciated.

When I see our db's backpeddling 2 seconds before the snap after they have already lined up at least 10 yds off the ball, it makes me want to put some pads on myself and hit chavis at about 100 mph with a form tackle. Every freekin game we do this and I wonder how in the hell no one catches hell over it. Our db coach is the worst in the nation. obxvol, I'll personally run out on the field with you and we will closeline somebody and then catch Heffney with one too on the way back to our seats.

I didnt know he made a comment about it. This just makes me even more angry at the coaches. Is ingnoring the problem going to make it go away? Obviously not.

I think UT's defense matches up better with LSU. LSU doesn't spread the field as much as the teams that beat UT this year.

Should be a great game. UT needs to play better then it has the last 2 weeks vs Vandy and Kentucky.

I think Chavis's philosophy on defense is not to give up any big plays. That translates into the secondary playing off the WR's.

Someone on the radio brought up something Hefney said "keep the play in front of you" which the radio commentator got upset with a few weeks ago.

If the opposing team can just throw the ball right down field using 5-15 yard passes, then they don't need a BIG PLAY! The short ones work just as well!

The defense plays with a "bend but don't break" mindset, and the offense has a "keep away" mindset. If the players don't execute, which is commonplace in the 2nd half, then those schemes don't work. When the players do execute you have UGA games.

good explanation. imo it is not all on the D backs -- if we had better D line play it would make a big difference. and if we had some improvement in D coaching our pass D would not be our achilles' heel year after year.
