Anyone can support a team that is winning - it takes no courage. But to stand behind a team to defend a team when it is down and really needs you, that takes a lot of courage.
-- Bart Starr

I think that Starr was referring to those of us Kentucky FB fans over the last 50 years.

Here are some gems from that great coach.

"It's easy to have faith in yourself and have discipline when you're a winner, when you're number one. What you got to have is faith and discipline when you're not a winner. "

"It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up."

"The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall."

"I don't think there's a punch-line scheduled, is there?"
Vince Lombardi

BTW, I love Calvin and Hobbs.

You left out "Show me a good loser and I will show you a loser"

A Quote I am going to start living my life by....<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Here's one that Chris Low borrowed from Tony Basillio/Beano...

But LSU coach Les Miles coaches the way we all should live -- in his hopes and not in his fears.

Whether it means looking for familiar people inside the Tennessee family for an OC (Kippy Brown, Cutcliffe, Sanders, Marrone), or playing soft coverage in order to not give up the "big play", or not having Gerald Jones actually throw from the G-Gun, or if it means not taking a chance/developing underclassmen when they could possibly compete with (or be better than) upperclassmen, or if it means settling for 3 pts. when you need 6, or if it means being reluctant to change up a staff in order to have one person concentrate on special teams... this all points to a guy that feels more comfortable with playing it safe rather than taking a chance/calculated risk or stepping out of his comfort zone.

Im trying to say I think a lot of people are getting away from cheering for our program. I was a fulmerite pre UCLA, and I has a fence sitter until last Saturday just seeing if he could pull of a miracle. Now I am a full blown "Negavol" and I want Fulmer OUT! But with that opinion I have, I still want the best for my team, and I want people to support our team, because we have A) one of the best Defenses in the SEC let alone College football, B) We have one of the better kickers in the SEC, and arguably all of College football, and C) Eric Berry is a Man among boys, and is probably one of the better Defensive backs to ever put on the Tennessee Jersey. I think there are a lot of positives, and we can all enjoy this year, but the fact is we arn't as great as we should be, that is obvious, but we can still back our program positively, rather than criticizing aspects of our program that shouldn't be.

I can only enthusiastically agree with C. I cannot imagine the anguish that Berry must go through daily when he receives texts and emails from his former comrades in Georgia.

You got the Berry part right.

I'm not saying don't criticize them. I'm saying you should still stand behind them in times of need. Using you example, If you do correct that child, and correct him you need to be there to support him when he feels down on himself for making a mistake. A kid (or the Tennessee Football Program as of right now) needs harsh punishment for being wrong, or not trying their best, but also need encouragement to get them by. That is all I am trying to say.

None of these quotes apply to our team or Philip Fulmer. The fans don't have faith anymore, the team has little discipline and Fulmer has had 9 years (or 7 since 2001) to turn this thing around.

I agree. It's time to circle the wagons and let these young men know that we believe in them.

now that's a sentiment I 100% agree with.

I need to figure out how to continue to show displeasure with Fulmer, but support for the guys strapping it on.

I think every Vol fan including myself need to stick to this. We can hate our coach as must as possible, we can blame and accuse as much as we want, but we should never tarnish the Tennessee legacy, and we should stand behind our University, our Program, and our players as we would in years past! I'm inspired how about everyone else?

It's one thing to support a team that is down, it's another to support a stubborn team that doesn't change it's ways and it's strategies through the years.

If it just looked like all of them were giving it 110% I would agree with this statement. Any football team starts with the QB plain and simple. His play and attitude make or break the team's attitude. We can see this on a game by game basis with Cromp.

this lame garbage about courageous fans supporting losing teams is just a cry from a loser.

The bottom line is that the coaching professions exists as a high paid profession because some are better than others and win more. Winning is the only measure of a football coach. All the other measures are for they guys that don't win.

Winning is the only reason you play the game, plain and simple.

Before anybody freaks out, I agree that Coach Fulmer needs to step down.

That said, some of you sound suspiciously like Bammers to me. Winning is all that matters? So if we win, paying our players is okay? Playing criminals and thugs is alright? Winning is not all that matters, and you should be ashamed of voicing that thought.

Yes, the coaching staff has done a very poor job this season, and, many would argue, for the last few. On the other hand, I can't tell that any of our players are lying back or not giving good effort. No, they're not flawless, but who is, day in and day out?

I agree with giving the coaching staff hell for making chronically bad choices. I even agree with firing coaches who aren't getting the job done. Players are entitled to the odd mistake or 2. In my opinion, only those players who don't give the effort and those coaches who don't care are to be derided.

This argument isn't matter of our resposibility to keep the team on the straight and narrow. It's about throwing off on the team as a whole because of coaching errors and the mistakes of individual players.

This is still my Team. And any Bammer, Tiger, Commodore, Gator, or even former-Vol fans who insult my team are the enemy. Go Vols!

My high school baseball coach used to tell us, "They say winning isn't everything?...See how many people show up to see a bunch of losers play." I hated my coach...but we won. :)

more excuses. Nobody said cheating is OK. I'm very simply saying that losing is not OK. All the pithy quotes to the contrary were uttered by losers as an excuse for having done so.
