I'm just as upset as anyone about the woodshed beating our defense just took. I thought I would give my positives and negatives as well as some quick grades to the units.

Negatives: Secondary, Defensive front, Wide receivers, special teams
Positives: qb, offensive line, rb's, wide receivers.

Grades:
QB Erik Ainge- A-
Erik did a great job of finding the open man and not forcing throws. His first half was spectacular minus the fumble. Give Erik the receivers he had last year and we put up 50+, but this is not last year.

Running Backs- C+
The running backs played ok. Foster was the highlight and although he did show great strength in breaking a number of tackles along with 86yrds and a 6.6ypr, he was caught from behind several times. The running game was rolling and would probably have been much better had the next group done more.

Wide Receivers- C
Although receivers did a decent job of catching the ball, there was absolutely ZERO long ball threat. Some may say this was Ainge, but I attribute this to our WR's youth. Taylor played well early with 106 yrds total and 17.0 ypc...pretty impressive.

Defensive Front- D
6.2 ypc and 231yds total are an embarrassment. The defensive front was pathetic tonight. I'm willing to forgive the pass rush a bit, as the secondary was pretty bad in its own right which reduced the ability to blitz.

Defensive Secondary\linebackers-D
I'm bunching these together because they played about the same. Allowing 240 yards passing is bad, but not as bad as allowing running backs to pass through you like a highly efficient toilet is worse. The tackling was terrible, and the early pass interference call was very costly. we looked like cal last year.

Offensive line-B
For the most part Ainge had plenty of time to run and the rb's were able to get past the first line. Good by the O line to hold back a blitzing cal team.

Special Teams-D-
Only the long field goal keeps this unit from an F. I was puckering so bad our special teams came out that I'm planning on opening a jewelry store later this week. The punt on the runback was placed perfectly, just defended like a bunch of school girls in a three legged race. pathetic. Kickoffs went for long yardage several times. I know the kickoff line has been moved back, but the tackling was very poor.

Coaching-C
Cut seemed to have a decent game plan and for the most part executed that game plan fairly well. Chavis on the other hand came in with a play book that was set up like a "memory" game, and his memory was lacking. The lack of a pass rush allowed longshore to sit back and survey the field for what seemed like an eternity. The call to not run it on 4th down early inside the 5 was unforgivable. The run game had been great up until that point and we gave away those 7 points.

All in all I come away with mixed emotions. Our wide receivers will improve and if we can get a vertical threat to develop then this offense could be special. On the other hand, the defense looked worse tonight than I have seen it in years, and the SEC is all about defense. If the defense does not improve then Tennessee will be Kentucky a la late 90's. let's pray X is ok.

All I had to do was scroll down and see that you didn't give any defensive unit an F and I knew that I didn't need to read anymore...

QB=A(Ainge was poised and had a really good night)
RB=B(Foster shined tonight)
WR=C+(Did pretty good, but not good YAC)
OL=B-(Better than last year)
DL=F(No pass rush, no run stopping)
LB=D-(Terrible tackling, couldn't stop run)
DS=D(WR open way too much)
ST=D+(Too many big gains)
Coaching=C-(Why the heck do you throw 3-5 yd passes on 3rd and 12?)

QB Erik Ainge- B+
Played solid. He could have been great with better playcalling

Running Backs- B
Arian Foster looked good. Lennon Creer was in the game for some reason. Hardesty looked the same as in 2006.

Wide Receivers- C
Lucas Taylor did well. Austin Rogers was pretty dependable. Josh Briscoe looks confused and surprised when he catches the ball.

Tight Ends - B
Chris Brown gets an A. Luke Stocker looked nervous. He had a dropped pass and a false start. Cottam didn't do anything. Shocking.

Defensive Tackles- F
Justin Forsett basically was Tony Hunt.

Defensive Ends - F
No sacks. No hurries. Let's try a 3-4. I really hope Xavier Mitchell is alright, though.

Defensive Secondary - D-
Hefney didn't even look very good. I think he might have been a little hurt. The corners were unimpressive. Parrish didn't do anything. It seemed like we gave the receivers big cushions to avoid the big plays. Naturally, we gave up tons of shorter and intermediate passes. Additionally, they got big plays anyway.

Linebackers-D
Get off your freaking blocks.

Offensive line-C
Not bad against Cal. You're dead meat again in SEC competition.

Special Teams-F
We looked like we didn't even understand the rules of special teams play, which leads me to...

Coaching-F
Months of preparation should result in a much, much better gameplan. I'm tired of our defenses getting extremely soft in the fourth quarter. We get run all over.

Why did we go away from the run in the 4th quarter? Cutcliffe got all pass happy!

We were not a top 25 team tonight. Football observers across the nation will be furious if we do not drop out of the top 25.

I disagree. we lost to a pretty dang good cal team, I think we all underestimated them.

Lennon Creer was in the game because he will by pass all the rest, he just need some playing time and Fulmer knows it. You guys should.:rock:
