erickson happened to the unlucky coincidence of arriving there after some academic problems and the chancellor vowed to clean up the mess. not that asu is now stanford or something, but let's just say they haven't been able to recruit the "quality" athletes like they have been able to in the past. there one advantage in the pac-10 used to be that they could take every 4 or 5 star guy with academic problems that USC and UCLA could not. now they can take one or two of those guys per class.
