I just wanna start this off by saying, I believe god hears our prayers, even in this case when it’s written on volnation.
God sees our prayers to him, and I believe no prayer is to small, or to big for our God. AMEN
Father god, thank you for giving us our breathe today, thank you for giving us peace in our life so that we can enjoy the sport we love. Thank you for your grace, mercy, and love that gives us our ability to be able to have the sport of football.
Father god, I ask that you penetrate the minds of our coaches, give them insight, Knowledge, and peace of mind this Saturday. Be with them and their families father God.
I ask that you even be with all members of the AD of our program father god, give them vision into the future and a clear path of where we need to go with our athletics. We ask that you be with them in all their decisions and touch their hearts, so that all decisions are made in the best interest of the program and not for one’s self gain.
Last off father god, be with our young men this weekend, give them protection father god, I ask that no Tennessee or Pittsburg player be hurt this weekend, give our vols the strength, endurance, and speed father god, lend our program your Holy Spirit and let it penetrate all of our players for this game. After it’s all said I’m done father god, I hope this young men understand it’s because of you that they get to play the sport they love, and that it’s you that gives them the abilities, and they give all the glory to you God.
I love you father god, and I thank you for hearing me and being with me in this prayer. Amen!!!

Thank you for the prayer.

As some know, I went to the same HS as Heath Shuler years ago. A few years ahead of him. In between us one the program was still really good and made the playoffs all but one year. One of those years a local pastor was asked to pray before the game as was the practice then. He began much like the prayer above but toward the end the fan in him took over. To a loud chorus of boos from a down state opponent... he said, "And Lord, please help our boys tonight. We pray that you would let them beat this team". (Paraphrase but really close)

Needless to say he wasn't asked again.

Yes. IIRC, JohnnyBuck Mitchell ran roughshod over them. For a long time the downstate teams couldn't match the toughness of the Mountain teams in NC. The quality of football has gotten better across the state now.

I'm kind of old now... during my "era" you had the Streaters, Bryson, Shulers, Pickens, and a few other really good players come out of the small schools west of Asheville. A guy that got away from UT was Sam Gash. He was a pretty good player for Penn State.

Interesting story about Pickens and Murphy. He wasn't the best player at that school during that period. They had a RB a few years before named Tony Colbert who was dominant. He wasn't very good in school and chose to sign with the Cubs out of HS. He washed out in just a few years. Other than hating school I never understood that choice. He was great in the field but couldn't hit anything except a low fastball.
