A "Pac-16" Impact on UT's Football Future

I think florida state is a real possibility too if the sec expands. Virginia tech, ga tech, and clemson make sense geography wise. I think Texas would rather be in the new sec, if there is one, than the new pac-10

Erik Ainge is from Oregon. Arian Foster is from New Mexico. Peerless Price is from Ohio. Jayson Swain is from Illinois. Robert Meachem is from Oklahoma. Mark Jones is from Pennsylvania. Kevin Burnett is from California.

We've had plenty of luck getting recruits from PAC16 and the new Big 12 territory.

Agreed, there is enough talent in the South alone to fuel every team we have, it will come down to recruiting and coaching...........um TN looks.......mediocre at best.

Great attempt at turning this into another coaching staff debate.

im hoping VT is NOT an option. VT has nothing to contribute to SEC other than what some may argue on the field preformance; however, remember how terrible VT was just only about 15 years ago before the older vick got there, they have a relatively smaller fan base compared to other options on the table and they bring no big tv markets with western va being so sparsly populated and the rest of the state being split between UVa/VT/completely apathetic to college football. They have no traditional rivalries with any school currently in the SEC. If the SEC was to expand i'd hope theyd take schools that would be better fits in tradition and fan bases like texas, florida state, and clemson.

The Pac-10 and the Big 12 are both power conferences. Though I agree that at present time they do not measure up to the level of dominance possesed by the SEC, I dont think the kids that attend these schools factor the strength of the conference into their decision for which school to play for. Point being, in either conference they have a chance to play for a BCS Championship and I think for the majority of athletes, it's about staying close to home, while playing for a team with a chance to be No. 1.

If the dominoes continue to fall the Pac 10's way I would find it hard to call any other conference superior........believe me it pains me greatly to say that.

Actually, I think it will be better for the SEC. Because these teams will be playing better teams throughout the year. Which means none of them will be having perfect seasons as often and making it to the BCS NC, which was already hard for them with cupcake schedules.

These recruits are going to see these teams having a harder time now, and they will see the SEC still dominating and they will choose the SEC. As they should.

You would be surprised at the TN to VT fan ratio in NE Tn then. Who is TX rival in the SEC?

Also, VT is in SE VA not western Va. Also, their success stems from Frank Beamer.. Vick was just part of it. Also, they consistently sell out Lane Stadium which holds 66,000 people which is more than Ole Miss and Vanderbilt, and just a few shy of Kentucky.

Tennessee and Virgina Tech could be a heated rivalry within a couple years.. Especially if they keep spanking us like they did in that bowl game.

For the record; I do not like Va Tech whatsoever, but your entire argument was flawed and I see no real point that says we shouldn't take Va Tech if we could.

This will hurt UT since we do not have a firm recruiting base and have to recruit nationally. We have already been impacted with the development of the directional programs in the state of Florida. Some of those players at those schools fell to UT in the past.

Also, the revival of USCjr and UNC with have also cut some of our recruiting advantages of the 1990's. Unless we can politic successfully in Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama our program will continue to slide. And you could argue that we have not won our own state for the last five to ten years. Alabama, Auburn, and Georgia have gotten their share of top talent out of our backyard.

You might want to correct this.

Blacksburg is on the state's western boarder.

There are 3 towns named Blacksburg in Va and the one that holds VA Tech is in SE Va. I have several friends that go there and it is only 2 hours away from my hometown.

You might want to check yourself before trying to be a douche.

Come on, really? Tennessee is way too established to just fall off and we're still recruiting very effectively. Plenty of elite programs have been through far worse and recovered.

Texas has a historic rivalry with Arkansas.

Virginia Tech would add a little to the SEC.

However, there's no comparing the impact of Texas to the SEC

No, there isn't, because Texas isn't walkin' through that door.

Behind FSU, VaTech is the best football program the SEC could realistically add IMO.

you must have failed geography.....VT is near the WV border in WESTERN Virginia....i live in Southeastern VA and VT is 6-6 1/2 hours away from me....before you start calling people a douche you might want to try a simple wikipedia search and look at a map to make sure you arent the one looking like an idiot

This Pac10 expansion is stupid the schools in Texas and Oklahoma arent even in the Pacific coast area. If anything they should add Boise State, Utah, BYU, Nevada, etc. solid programs that are on the rise and are close to the area. Can you imagine being UCLA or USC and having to go to Oregon one week then going back to So Cal then the next week going to Texas to play a game and then either go back to Arizona, Washington, or Oregon to play another game. That is going to drain the players out.

they don't have to keep "pacific" as part of the name if they don't want to. the conference could be renamed.

Look at it this way...

Being in a 16 team conference sucks. Only 1 champion out of 16 teams. Only 2 BCS invites. The SEC has it all divided amongst only 12 teams. Our trips are shorter - Baton Rouge is MUCH closer than Seattle is to Texas.

This means USC, Texas, and OU could never simultaneously go to the BCS. This means if there were a playoff, these 16 teams would still only get 1 automatic bid. The teams in a 16 team minor conference are fine, a 16 team major conference will end up screwing themselves.
