Chris Dortch of Blue Ribbon Yearbook discusses Vols basketball on 104.5 The Zone in Nashville on 12.19.19. He also discusses Vol signee Santiago Vescovi's skill set.

At this time it's about 8 podcasts down the page.

As a bonus you can listen to the Phil On The Hill Christmas segment which is absolutely hilarious. It should be the first podcast as of this moment.

Doesn't sound like we will get to see him play this year

if Vescovi can't play I hope the NCAA's File 13 Committee gets huge chunks of coal in their stockings...

Dortch who is an experienced expert said Vescovi can do it all at the PG position and UT badly needs PG help. He is a true PG that can shoot. He won't be taking anyone's spot but he would make UT instantly better because there are holes at PG and in the post. It would help the slashers like James.

Cliff notes please

Why can’t he play?

Dortch doesn't state the kid won't play. This was apparently before Barnes quote about not playing this year. He basically called Vescovi no ordinary freshman. He said he's watched plenty of tape on this kid and he can do it all offensively. Dribble, pass (play maker) and score at all 3 levels.

Barnes says he won’t play?

Sorry been out of the loop today

Edit. I see the other thread now. Not surprised I said from the jump I’d expect him to rs

If I were Barnes (other than being a multi-millionaire ), I'd do everything possible to play this kid. We need a real point guard and if he's really good, he's leaving early anyway. Why screw with a redshirt? CRB can dumb down the offense enough to get him some playing time. Turner's better as a shooting guard or even a sixth man anyway, especially with his medical issues.

Anyone who's taken the time to look at this kids films and can't see he's immediately better than anyone on the current roster at PG probably needs to stop drinking.

I don't understand why Barnes wouldn't play him.. That makes no since to me.

He'd rather have him for 4 full years after having 9 months of practice with the team rather than 3 and a half with only a month to prepare. If he was certain to leave early for the NBA then playing him ASAP makes sense.

Dude if you're too stubborn to admit this kid could bring immediate improvement to the teams lackluster offense I don't know what to tell you. I'm seriously laughing my ass off at you.
So, I have to ask this question. If SV is instantly the best option at PG on the roster the second he steps foot on campus, then why do you think Barnes is so bearish on the idea he will even play, much less contribute much of anything this season?

Do you really believe Barnes is either woefully stubborn or just inept?

The NCAA isn't requiring Vescovi to sit out 2019-20. It would be a coaching/player decision.

thanks TGO...wow...now I'm more confused than ever...we need him like...right now...:D

PS. still say it's the NCAA's fault...makes me feel better anyway...;)

I should've read further...well, at least there's some sense to that...thanks again...:D

Most recent Barnes interview I saw, he said it takes time to learn how to play PG effectively in his system and it is strictly a Barnes decision on his playing or not. As stated by other posters in this thread, Barnes probably does not want to waste an entire yr of eligibility learning on the job when he can learn in practice. I agree this teams badly needs a PG but we are going to be loaded next yr and having a good PG to lead that team can make a huge difference. Take the lumps this yr and move on.

If you are judging a kids impact based off his highlight tape that is all I need to know about you...but yes you’re correct, I’m sure Barnes just doesn’t like winning and even though this guys would win them an additional 4-5 games just wants to sit him on the bench for no apparent reason.

I believe he's a bit stubborn. You can see this during games when he seems a bit disinterested, you Know letting the boys learn a lesson.

Pretty big difference between letting guys learn a lesson for a few minutes or potentially even a game and using half a season to prove a point?

Every coach does that at times, though. Every. Single. One.

Sometimes, especially with a team that isn't doing what you've asked them to do as Barnes alluded to after the Cincinnati game, you have to let them figure some things out on their own. Let them struggle thru their own way of doing things until they see it isn't working. We do the same things with our kids, sometimes.

And I never think he looks disinterested. Maybe you are confusing disinterest with composure. He isn't freaking out and flailing thru his sweat-soaked jacket like Pearl does, but that is just differences in coaching style and personality. Both work for each coach.
