A lot of truths...(ESPN article)

Here's some truths for you. Butch has two more years to make the bread. Whether you like it or not. Enjoy it.

People were saying in 2008 you can not fire a coaching legend with his second losing season in 4 years. If this thing goes south this year Butch will be fortunate to see next year.

The only thing I disagree with from the article is that Del Rio = Sutton, Kirkland, JRM (but JRM should be able to play, right?)

Regardless, we have to win this game. I have to say, I've felt a lot of enjoyment like I thought I would this season. We lose Saturday, and Tennessee football won't be the same for me.

If we lose Saturday, which I don't believe we will, in reality nothing will change. It would royally suck, but Team 120 and Vol Nation will have to get up on Sunday, put on our big boy (or girl) pants, and get back to work. A Florida loss will only define our season if we let it. Too many things can happen in the SEC over the course of the season for one loss to destroy our season.

I have seen a few of your posts vollygirl, and you bleed orange. Nothing can ever change that.

When CBJ was hired, his scouting report was a good recruiter, bad game day coach. Today, this is exactly the reality. We got who was hired. Why do we expect something different? CBJ coaches with emotion and relies too much on mental talents and coaching mental fortitude. He preaches being a mature competitor, resiliency, etc. He doesn't spend a whole lot of time on strategy, the fundamentals, etc. We're talking about college kids here. Teach them how to play, let a motivational speaker focus on the mental aspect. It is hard to teach a college kid mental aspects of anything. But they can learn to tackle, block and catch a pass.

Cuonzo Martin was a good coach? I must be remembering wrong. Also when he knew he was leaving, he waited just long enough for Pearl to take the Auburn job so we'd be further screwed. That was an ass-hat move.

IMO he was, most people I talk to had a problem with his style and therefore gave him even less slack on his record which wasn't bad. He always recruited well and get this he took us to an elite 8!

I love Pearl but first year was a dumpster fire despite excellent recruiting. Not saying he wont turn it around, but geez enough with the revisionist History

Blah blah blah. Jones better win this game or else. I've read this same thing before. Didn't think there needed to be a 20th thread stating the same thing :horse:

I really don't think Butch realizes how bad it can get here. He was unhappy with the grumbling after Arkansas last year. Failing to live up to the hype this year, and being downright stubborn about the infallibility of his system are not going to set well with many. Losing to Florida will set the tone, failing to show up after that will mean the bloom is off the rose. Mark my word....he will not respond well to it.

I hope he wins....it's best for the program. I hope if he loses he keeps his ego and temper in check and takes his lumps. Snap and clear. He'll dig himself a hole he can't get out of if he doesn't.

He should call Dooley for his feedback

Stop, I dont consider myself a negavol but what you just said is down right ridiculous. This is a championship caliber team and if he doesn't get it done this year, he never will here. Plain and simple its time to put up or shut up for Butch Jones and team 120

Most thought 97 was our year, but it turned out to be 98.

what I got from the article is we just go out and play like it's a bowl game...carry on...:salute:

GO VOLS!

It's put up or shut up time for Butch - didn't need this article to tell us. If he fails against the Gators again, the wheels will likely come off and could be some serious crash and burn times ahead. We could easily go on 4 or even 5 game losing streak if we consider what's coming up (yes even against SCjr on the road if we lose 4 games prior to that - unfortunately even Muschamp has Butch's number so far).
However, all these dark thoughts will disappear with the win on Saturday and in that case we could easily have that great year everyone has been waiting for.

Sweet mother of God.

Regardless, there is strong medicine in that article. Not everyone will want to swallow it.

Yep let's go through another uninspiring coaching search so you dolts can moan and groan about who we didn't hire again while creating lists of coaches that are never going to come here. That sounds like a great plan while we flat out ignore the fact that Jones completely rebuilt the entire roster and has us competitive again something that hasn't happened in a long time. You and the rest of the dolts on here can continue to suck your thumbs and moan 24 hours a day.

Any time a poster agrees with an article like this, other pollyanna posters have to come up with the straw man arguments of "be careful what you wish for in wanting Jones fired" or " you aren't a true fan if you don't pull for the coach".

Few if anyone that spend their time on here wants to see Jones do anything other than to succeed at the highest level.

A 3-13 record against ranked opponents isn't succeeding at the highest level. Not even close.

Time to put up or shut up this Saturday.

Butch needs to find a way to win this game by putting his players in position to win, preparing them to win, coaching in the game to win. He needs to be creative & unpredictable and get TN over this HUMP. On TN first offensive possession come out with something the Gators have not seen on tape yet. Surprise them, catch them off guard-I don't care what it is so long as it works! Butch has a tremendous opportunity the next 4 weeks against 4 teams currently in the top 20. Start this Saturday by beating FL handily.

The last 2 games against FL have shown Butch' game plan to play conservative, not to lose, clock management etc have proven ineffective. He needs to come out his shell this Saturday, put it all on himself and cut his guys lose, I think he will and I think he will beat FL by 14 or more Saturday. He doesn't need a bunch of trick plays, just the right plays:clapping:. The great coaches turn momentum in their favor with brilliant and sometimes just gutsy play calls, often times when their opponents, announcers and fans least expect it. JUST DO IT BUTCH-BEAT FL!!!

Butch needs to coach to win, not preserve a lead.

I'm a reasonable guy, but I realize Butchs weakness is his conservative nature.

Big time programs have to play to win.

Very good observation. I can not recall a time we were not conservative. This year, with all of the talent we should be a team that should excel and kick butt for 60 minutes and don't look back. The object is to score. You have to have that mentality if you want to win. If not, we will never get over the hump. This is the year we have to beat Florida and the rest of the SEC East to be successful. We have the tools but the coaches have to do their part.

You forgot to add... Find every negative about new coach and repeat it to exhaustion.

Seriously I can't believe our fans are this big of babies on a 9 game win streak. Some concerns yes but the odds of winning 9 games is very very low. Many seem to think a good coach is going to come here. I think our fans sour attitude makes us damaged goods.

If we get another coach it will be our 5/6th option and they won't be happy again... but it will be who they deserve.

That is truth .... like it or not.

Again with the top 5 talent non-sense?? We aren't on the same planet in terms of talent as Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State, Clemson, LSU, etc. after that you have a lot of teams who are talented like Tennessee but there are problem two dozen teams who are similar to UT in talent: UGA, UF, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Auburn, A & M, USC, Texas, Notre Dame, Oregon, etc. Any one of those teams is capable of getting on a run and having a great year but to suggest that we are somehow far superior than most teams we play in talent is a bit of a stretch. You could argue that after the loss of Cam Sutton UT is probably the 5-6 most talented defense in the SEC. We certainly don't have the talent on defense that Alabama, LSU, Florida, or Auburn has. We may have the talent that UGA, Ole Miss, or A & M has but neither of those teams is going to be the next coming of the Steel Curtain on defense. Our oline is flat out atrocious probably ranked in the bottom 3-4 teams in the conference and Dobbs may be in the top 5 in SEC quarterbacks but that isn't saying a whole lot. Hurd, Kamara, and Malone are good/great players but you wouldn't put them ahead of UGA or LSU in terms of talent at the rb position. Malone is probably a top 5 receiver but Calvin Ridley at Bama is on a different planet in terms of ability. After Malone you have a bunch of guys who are inconsistent. Opposing teams refuse to kick to Berry and Maybin can't stay on the field so I am not sure where this top 5 talent non-sense keeps coming from other than recruiting analysts who like to keep their jobs.

Yep, they will tell us how "they knew UT would settle for a cheaper coach" and will complain about wanting someone else after day one. Then the recruiting will fall off again, and someone else will have to rebuild the roster. It will be another 3-4 years before we are competitive again. The same crap we have been through since CPF left.

Why is that 9 win stretch such an accomplishment? Who shouldn't we have beaten in that time period? South Carolina...barely. The weak sisters of November? Northwestern is arguably the most impressive win....think of that, NORTHWESTERN! App. State....no comment. VT, Ohio.....either could have gone the other way.

I'm thankful for the streak.....but it's just beating the teams your supposed to beat.

I've not asked for a coaching search. I don't want one. Butch succeeding is the best thing for the program and the fanbase. He has that opportunity....right now. All some of are saying is it must happen now, or the next year and a half are going to be difficult for him. He'll lose a large part of the fanbase, recruiting will inevitably drop off, and he loses many key players that should make team 120 successful. Platitudes, catch phrases, and selling himself won't be enough. He has to at least split the next 4, with one of them being Saturday. Nobody wants to beat Florida more than me. I promise you.

We can disagree without being disagreeable. We all want the same thing ultimately.

It is alarming that a head coach in his 4th year after 3 games into the season appears to have an oline that is flat out atrocious

No.

No.

You don't ever, no matter how good you are, get to the point where you "should've beat" all the best teams on your schedule.

Saban's not there. Meyer isn't there. Even those two guys, the best in the business, shouldn't be expected (by any rational fan base) to go 12-0 every year.

What they should be expected to do, is compete well, and win at least their share of the games, against peer competition.

Did Butch do that in 2015? Not quite as well as we'd all like. So sure, throw some shade on him.

Hope to win them all, yes. Cheer and shout to win them all. Just don't ever become the rabid Bama-fan type who expects to win every peer-competition game. College football ain't made that way.

Saying we should have won those individual games is not the same as saying we should go 12-0. We were better than those teams, we lost, and it keeps happening over and over and over
