A lot of new looks on Offense

A few of my media friends have been telling me they are hearing a lot of changes in offense. A lot of 2 TE sets, backfield passing to RBs and a lot of under the center snaps. Some of this is function of new QB who are more polished passers (Dormady and JG) but also a lot is also Larry Scott putting his stamp on the offense.
It is still very early in the camp and no pads yet but I am excited to see new tweaks Larry will add to the offense.

erm.. more passes to the backfield is not a sign of a more polished passer.. That's something you normally do if your QB is LESS polished unless you have marshall faulk in the backfield. As far as 2 TE sets and under center snaps that just means they need to get the second TE more prep and under center is confusing to me do you mean less shotgun and more pistol or more actual I form/pro set?

We ran a lot more out of pistol last year than most probably noticed. In our offense its a lot more sheme flexible than going ot the I form because it offers most of the advantages without meaning the team has to take on a totally different mentality/blocking scheme)

Consistency is the road to success. If I can run a play in pistol that offers 80% of the advantages of running it in I-form but only 2 people have to change what they do (QB and RB) it works a lot better than switching to actual I-form and now 7 guys have to change everything. FYI its a lot easier for a QB or RB to react to changes and change what they do than an O-lineman. QB/RB messes up if the oline and RB/QB get it right it might still work out. 1 olineman screws the pooch and its likely game over on that play.

He didn't say more passes to the backfield is a sign of a more polished passer, you came up with that on your own. He said some of the new formations (Such as coming under center more often) came about because "Some of this is a function of QB's who are more polished passers..." Sounds to me like Scott's just opening up the offense. And what do you mean under center is confusing to you? What exactly do you think it means?

It could even mean that they are using the backs more in the passing game as a whole, not just behind the line passes. Context is a little confusing on the "backfield passing to RBs" part of the OP.

It's a screen and everyone uses them. Peyton even used them, good grief.

That's interesting. I'm fine with whatever wins games.

Dang that Dlineman made Richmond look bad

Thomas blocked the back side linebacker right into the hole. Wiesman also seemingly missed or barely got a piece of his man too while Robertson blocked his guy straight into the play, even though it was designed to go outside or at least off tackle. Then watch Kendrick's man straight run away from him in pursuit. Just a complete mess if you ask me.

But yes, if Richmond seals his guy the Rb probably gets outside.

You have to give the App State DE credit by turning the play back inside and the rest of the D for swarming.

Kendrick was at RT. His guy didn't even get to the play until the RB was on the ground.

I think we'll see more of the traditionally effective answer to that this year. Dobbs could run. Dobbs never mastered timing patterns or putting the ball consistently in a small window. As a consequence, UT could not go "hot" to slants, hitches, quick outs, and other plays that punish defenses for aligning to stop zone runs.

The Dobbs O worked. Scored lots of points and posted big numbers. But it wasn't Jones' O that he's run throughout his career. Dobbs rushed 12 times per game. That's about 3 times more than Jones has always said he wanted his QB to run.

QD and JG both looked good in the spring on timing routes and the kinds of throws that Dobbs seldom threw and was always late on.

IMHO, we will see the passing game more complimentary of what Jones wants to do with the RB. And we will for the first time see the O that Jones has wanted to run the whole time.
