(My first thread created on VN. A fake letter from a fan. Figured its not the worst first thread ever)

Dear Mr. Dooley,

I would like to take this moment to first say thank you. You stepped up to the plate during the turmoil caused by the sudden departure of the previous coaching staff. You put your blood, sweat, and tears into this program. That is the kind of person we expect to lead the University of Tennessee.

However, we also expect the leader of the football team for the University of Tennessee to show results on the field. We expect there to be some improvement from year to year. While there has been some improvement in some aspects of the game (Offensive Line), there has been some regressions as well (Defensive Secondary). We put one foot forward but the other takes a step back. This has become evident by our consistency of now starting 0-5 in SEC play the last 3 years now. That is not direction that fans are wanting their team to move in.

No one questions your determination. No one questions for effort. No one questions the example you set for our players. You put yourself out there as a confident and charismatic face of the Tennessee football program. However, the product on the field is lacking in the tradition we have come to expect at the University of Tennessee. We know that you can't go out there and throw the ball. We know you can't catch it. We know you can't make or break tackles. However, as a leader, you are accountable. Just as in business- the man at the top must accept ultimate responsibility whether the product is good or bad.

While we appreciate the dedication you have had to the program- we also must say farewell. There is no doubt you will be leaving this program in a better state than you found it. For that we can be grateful. However, your lack of noticeable progress in achieving the historical excellence we come to expect at the university forces us to turn to another direction.

Thank you again for your time. Good luck wherever the future takes you. You may not have the best stats in the W/L column, but you are a man of integrity. Hold your head up high. Giving your all is nothing to be ashamed of despite the results.

Sincerely,
A Fan.

---------------

tldr: While I appreciate Coach Dooley's time and investment in the program, it is clear we need to go a different direction. He gave it his best shot but it just isn't enough at this point in his career to return TN to excellence.

There is no doubt he is a man of integrity and as that type of man he does deserve that much respect. He has been a great moral leader for the program. However, his lack of results (or even progression of achieving those results... 0-5 SEC start 3 years in a row. Progression of one aspect of the game but regressions in others, etc) is a clear indicator that he is not the future of the program if we want to be as relevant as we once were.

I have nothing against Derek Dooley as a person. I wish him no ill will. I just don't think he can turn the program into a National Contender on the field. And ultimately- that is what he was hired to do. People defend him saying it is the player's fault for their performance on the field- unfortunately for Dooley, being the HFC comes the responsibility of being accountable for the player's actions on and off the field.

I'm sure Dooley would appreciate more a post it note with "You're Fired" attached to a $5,000,000.00 check.

I feel like this is every level headed vol fans mindset. Derek Dooley is a great person, maybe not the best football coach. I feel for him. I really wanted him to succeed, but its just not going to happen. I think he should be remembered as the glue that held our great program together for the next guy to step in.

Why? He is going to fired. He is going to get paid.

People can want to crucify him now and want to hate on me for respecting what he stands for.

But the fact is: He isn't the answer when it comes to the on the field product. And he is going to get paid to go away.

He didn't help that much but it was destroyed before he got here.

I'm just saying you're going to flamed for your letter. I agree that it's what most level headed fans think but this place, well, we're not the most level-headed.

Dooley is a great guy, I would have loved to had him lead us to atleast a couple of SEC wins. I know he has tried hard, but he just doesn't have the it factor we need to get over the hump.

I just think Dooley would rather have success than a 5 million dollar buyout. I dont think hes going to run out all "la la la Im rich" like some like to imagine.

yea except for the fact that kiffin won more sec games in his one year than dooley has in his 3..just minor details i guess

I can't argue that fact. Also can't argue the fact that less than half of his recruiting class is still here. Would his other classes have been any different? We'll never know.
