A less costly fix and one that might work out better

Butch has had 5 years to upgrade his staff and gone from bad to worse especially on the offensive side. what makes you think he can ever put a winning staff together?

Hiring people to do what you want done the way you want it done isn't the same as hiring someone to do a job. In fact, it hamstrings someone who knows what he's doing. It just doesn't matter who you are; fatally flawed plans can't be made to work.

Butch could be an excellent program administrator - if he left the football to people who know what they are doing. But why pay the CEO big bucks when it's the other people who get it done?

I still think they should give Butch an office for the remainder of the year (March 2018?), and give Hoke the job as interim and maybe a year contract if he can effect change in the last games. Stabilize the bleeding and them look for a new head coach if Hoke doesn't cut it.

Agree. If not Hoke at least someone as the interim - certainly not Scott though.

Firing Butch Jones is a 20 Million dollar deal. You have to buy him out, buy out his assistants, hire new at market rates to get what you want. 20 Million might not even cover it.

Phillip Fulmer's problems started when Coach Cutcliff left. The key is good coordinators and assistants. Butch hasn't had that since he's been here. It's been a constant revolving door and it's evident that Shoop can't teach them how to tackle and the Offensive guy has a major problem with the offensive line.

I think the University would be dollars ahead going to Chief and offering what's necessary to bring him back as Defensive Coordinator. Hire the best OC that can be bought and do some serious work with the position coaches. Specifically the Offensive line coach and the QB coach.

We would have Butch the Recruiter with qualified coaches to develop the talent and coach the game. We wouldn't be out 7 or 8 million trying to match Alabama for a head coach and then out of money to hire the assistants he needs.

Seems plausible. I can't believe this hasn't been discussed.

How about digging up some dirt on him so you can fire him with cause like they are doing sharkhumper? Then come to a compromise on a MUCH LOWER buyout.

No good coordinator is going to come work for a lame duck coach.

Why not get Bob Kesling on the Coaches Show to ask him if he would just walk away...No Buyout...just like Gary Anderson did at Oregon St. I mean if he loves the program so much he wouldn’t want to hold it hostage would he?

That works in math only.

1. He is completely incompetent as a head coach
2. He is stuborn, will not let his assistant coaches make decisions.
3. Nothing would be accomplished by this plan but more losing!!!!!!!

Omg, NO! Fire Butch now! Find a cause in the contract and fire him for cause if you are worried about the money. We don't have anything to lose by firing him for cause. Let him sue us if he wants to. Orjust fire him anyway.

Butch recruits exceptionally well. He's bad at coaching them up and retaining his signees.

Really? "Exceptionally" well?

Where are the LB's? There are 4* LB's on the roster. Why aren't they any good? Same for OL's... DL's and to a lesser extent DB's.

He is bad at coaching them up. He's bad at attrition. But he's not good at recruiting to need either. His recruiting leaves holes that his other failures turn fatal.

Oh, you can throw in the fact that he for 4 straight years now has had extraordinary numbers of injuries. One year... it happens. Two years... there's a problem in the program. Four years... there's a problem at the top of the program.

FWIW... what demonstrates that Jones is an exceptional recruiter? NSD rankings?

In year 5, UT does not have quality depth at LB. Does not have depth on the DL. Has yet to produce an OL that matched the talent supposedly present on the roster. Has no experience and questionable talent at WR. And apparently does not have a QB that can run the system or be trusted to run it.

Fulmer recruited with a strategy. In alternating years, he would go after the best players he could get at whatever position then in the following year he would focus on filling the gaps in that class with the best players he could get at particular positions. That's why you would see him with a top 5 class one year then somewhere between 10th and 25th the next year.

Jones has done a very poor job of filling in those "gaps".

In short, Butch was star struck. He recruited for rankings instead of kids who fit the system he was trying to run.

Butch wants a coordinator that will run his (Butch’s) offense. And that’s is a major problem.

Absolutely. Add back all that have been injured, quit, or were kicked off the team. Retention is different than recruiting.

Bama has went to...what 8 BCS BOWLS?

15 million a pop on average.

120 million. Net gain i don't care to calculate.

That's just bowl games. Not even calculating the other 13 games.

The 20 million "transition fee" is a fraction of what will get in return if we spend the damn money we need to spend.
Not to mention this is not something to be paid off over night.

Money is not an issue, you only live once, bust the bank and take care of business.

Coming from someone who probably finances a happy meal on a credit card. Money is always an issue. Somewhere someone has to foot the bill.

Where's the guarantee that someone any better than Butch is going to take the job. How did Tennessee get Butch? Dooley? We had money then too didn't we? Aren't we paying Butch over 4 million a year?

During his time here, Butch has employed 3 different OCs and 2 DCs. Each of them he has hired. We cannot hire coordinators for him. Not how it works.

Or just raise the cost of a cup of coffee up five cents at every Pilot..
That should cover the buyout, and Gruden’s salary for the next trillion years.

They have tried that, Butch won't give up control. So he must go.

Maybe he could "fall on a helmet" or some other such tragedy. Then he is still the HFC, but just not able to screw this up anymore.

Actually his contract does explicitly state that if Butch is unable to coach, then TN is no longer on the hook to pay him his salary or his buyout. Butch's attorney is responsible for advising CBJ to obtain suitable LT disability coverage. So there are probably lots of random helmets lying all about the Anderson Training Center.

The whole lot of them need to be shown the door except for CRG
