I took my 6 year old son to his first basketvols game tonight and he loved it. Really glad we pulled it out in the end.

My thoughts:

Well, we didn't run the tempo anywhere close to where I thought we would but still landed in the 80's. Our movement seemed poor at times and there didn't seem to be many sets we ran.

Punter killed it tonight. I don't know where he went for a portion of the 2nd half, but we lost momentum when he was out. UNC-A went to a half court trap and we had no sufficient ball handlers and squandered our lead. That was a little disappointing.

Reese was surprising on offense, but got iso'd on D with Weeks multiple times and got embarrassed. Our defense overall was just embarrassing too. Poor communication on switches early on and a lack of help D. Not having a true big hurt us and we relied on outside shots or driving to the basket.

Really liked what I saw from Hubbs. He reminds me a little of Scotty with his demeanor but was flat out explosive at times. His key block saved the game or us. I hope all is well with the leg. It'll be fun to watch his development.

Seeing Turner and Kasongo in street clothes was frustrating because they are exactly what this team needs. We had no rim protection and gave so many easy buckets either from the post or off the drive. We needed a good ball handler to spell Punter at times too.

In the end, Our freshmen looked like freshman. McGhee shook off a lot of rust. Mostella still looked timid and passed up several open looks. Hope his confidence isn't shaken. I think we will surprise several good teams and will be exposed by some bad teams. UNC-A's half court sets made us look a little silly sometimes. I do hope this was all first game jitters.

If we can shore up a few of the defensive issues and get the 3 ball to fall with some consistency, we can be competitive with most teams. If we can't do that, it will likely be a long season. I suspect that we will improve a lot, how quick that happens remains to be seen.

Good win!! Wasn't pretty at all, but I'll take any win we can get this year! Punter will need to continue to score each night to give is a chance. I'm not expecting 31 a night but 15-20 would be nice! I'm just glad Tennessee basketball is back! I may be one of the few Tennessee fans who actually like Tennessee basketball more than Tennessee football, don't get me wrong I love Tennessee football, but the basketbal team holds a slight edge in my heart lol.

Anyways go vols! Good win tonight! Need a football win tmrw afternoon then a BBALL win at Georgia tech to make it a nice couple days to be a VOL!

Yeah you're definitely in the minority there. Football is #1 but I love and actively support both teams.

Excellent post man. I hope you take your son to more games this year (and they're the cheapest tickets have been since Buzz Peterson). Please do yourself a favor and keep with these write ups, it's great to see an unfamiliar face post here :)

Excellent assessment. A lot of film to watch on what we didn't do.
On a side note, the SEC Network + streaming was pretty good. Would rather have streamed it on the big screen, but the wife had to watch UK, which is nauseating.

A win is a win, good news is there is room for improvement. This team is going to struggle but hopefully with some tough play they will steal a few.

I, too, am one of the minority that love the bball team more than the football team. Always have growing up.

Thanks, Krag. Your boy, Reese, looked good last night on offense. You could tell he spent time in the weight room in the offseason. He didn't really roam too far from the paint either which was surprising.

His D just needs to come along a little faster. Wish he could have fronted the post more often. Also, I think he was waiting on his weak-side D for help too much and it just wasn't there. Overall, I see improvement from him though.

Edit: and, yes, I'll be takin my son to many more games. He's caught the basketvol fever it seems.

I am more of a college basketball than football fan and congratulations to UTC for beating Georgia and Wisconsin losing was a surprise.

I can honestly say that I love both bb and fb equally. I used to be frustrated as heck when I was young and it was rare to see UT on tv in bb. PBS out of Sneedville had the replays sometimes and I lived to see them. Most of the time you could see them on regular tv it was against a high profile team like Ky. and we all know how that used to play out.
