A goodbye to Nico

I think it all came down to his dad thinking he could play a high stakes game of Chicken and win. I honestly believe that Nico‘s family had no concept of the possibility that UT would call their bluff.
How do you know he hasn't already accepted a deal somewhere else for tons of money?

If so, the school got a bad deal. The school rep quoted in the NYT article is correct....he isn't worth $2 M.
Yeah who knows. He could ball out somewhere next year. Sounds like he made a business decision yesterday. Not sure why he chose to do it this way and burn bridges, and take a hit on his character. Weird situation all around.

Good luck to Nico (no animus from me. People make decisions they think is in their best interest, regardless of what others think.)

On the other hand, UT did the right thing. You can't let someone hold you hostage (whether it's a player or employee) when they threaten to quit...

I think the reason most of the fans are really torqued by this is the fact the timing of this was well-calculated to give Nico maximum leverage. Once that card is played, the party's over.

Good luck!

I think he wasn’t planning on transferring. There was a relief pitcher a couple years ago that went through arbitration and said “the things the Mets said about me, I’ll never forget” I’m paraphrasing. I think Nico got publicly arbitrated when the story came out and his camp was too soft to take the criticism. So they took their ball and went home

If he has left Knoxville and touched down somewhere, it's not going to be an easy secret to keep. Reporters are undoubtedly looking for his next spot and that scoop. It'll break very quickly if he's at UCLA or SMU or any major school.

There's a ton of clicks, like there have been today for Thamel and others, in reporting where he is and where he's going.

My thoughts are that Nico's probably sitting somewhere with one of those funny accident videos running through his head: "Yeah, that's me. You're probably how I got here...."

He may HAVE a landing spot that's now saying, "Did we say $3M earlier? We've run the numbers and it's looking a lot more like $1.5M is the best we can do....." which would be cold hand of karma grabbing his curlys and squeezing.

Either way, he's getting paid millions for playing one season of football. Unfortunately it's just a business for some players. Probably not the best way to go about it, but he may not even care. He's gonna get paid, and be a starter, most likely at Ohio St, or another playoff contender.

You think he's got the game to play for OSU or some other playoff caliber programs?

Um, yes. He played for one last year with less talent around him. Put NFL talent around him and see what happens. And even if he doesn't, he'll be laughing all the way to the bank.

He's not going to Ohio State which is flush with 2 great QBs. There's a very, very, very good chance Nico would never see the field at Ohio State.

Maybe somewhere in lesser B1G schools but Oregon called Coach Heupel about him being shopped and Michigan has Underwood.

Again, with national guys like Chris Low and Pete Thamel lighting up phones all over the country looking for a scoop, he'll not be in the shadows very long IF he has a landing spot already picked out. Somebody will talk.

They were all over him leaving UT. Low and Thamel know EVERYBODY. They'll find him by Monday OR they'll have word that he's still looking.

I'm rooting for him having nowhere and still looking. Yeah, I'm that petty.

Oh I totally agree. I hope dude ends up riding pine into oblivion. But that is highly unlikely. Chances are he had a deal, leveraged UT for more money, it didn't work, and we'll find out Wed where he's transferring to.
