A good point made last night on "Talkin Football"

We all know we abandoned the run game when Chaney went into panic mode after Florida went up on us, but one really good point they were making on Talkin Football was that we didn't just abandon the run game, Rivera was constantly in 1 on 1 coverage and was eating his man alive every time. Rivera was consistently showing he was stronger and faster, and when Florida went up we abandoned throwing to him too. For the most part Chaney only called plays involving Bray to Hunter/CP.

I have always felt Chaney's play calling was suspect. But that was horrible. It's almost like he calls plays as if he's playing against a weak defense even when the defense clearly isn't weak. He calls plays against a Florida D that will only work if Bray has plenty of time and the wide-out can burn his man. But Florida was getting pressure on Bray and their DB's were just as fast as our WR's. You've got to see that as an OC. Chaney needs to be gone before Dooley does.

Inseparable now...too late. It has been said before..but Dooley has a headset. Should have corrected it mid game.

I wonder how much of it was also Bray locking in on someone? Either way, it's a mistake that could have/should have been fixed.

Chaney has oftentimes said...."When the pressure is on, I play to our strengths". On 4th and one, Coach Fulmer always ran behind his best offensive lineman.


I personally don't have any problem with that approach

Only problem with that is Dooley said he changed his philosophy , he wants to score. He endorses this garbage offense...

I have a feeling Dooley had some words with Chaney after that game. That's why we're hearing rumors about Dooley calling plays.

I like CDD and he has done nothing but help drag this program out of a deep hole. He may not be the long term solution, but was a definately a good short term one when no one else was willing to do so.

His success at this point may very well hinge on Chaney...or lack there of. I think CDD went out and hired a lot of good assistants this year, but I am unsure as to why he kept Chaney. I think someone else should call plays. There was a reason Chaney didn't call plays for Kiffen. I don't know if CDD or any one else can call plays any better, but we should experiment with some better options.

It's like deja-vu around here.

I seem to remember another coach struggling and people defending him said we just needed to fire the OC and get another one and everything would be ok.

The more I think about it, the more it seems like another part of the problem is failure to rotate other players in and just attempting to ride the stars an entire game. UF was substituting DL in the first half knowing they were going to need something in the 4th. Not sure I like the message that the "play stars only in big games" is sending especially against deep SEC opposition. Kinda thinking the coaches outsmarted themselves a bit with this approach.

Everyone is so upset over losing to Florida, yes we were 3 point favorites, because it was a home game, but wasn't Florida ranked 18 and UT 23rd. Is it really an upset? :unsure:

Great post WesternNC....

The only thing I would like to add: Last year I think Wilcox leaving and Dooley wanting him to leave was a mutual, but imminent thing. I also feel Dooley has problems with Chaney's play calling at times, but couldn't afford to lose both his OC and DC in the same season. #1- it's hard to install a new system on both sides of the ball; that is a huge, huge task for any coach. #2- We need a big time RB and need to prepare for our WRs leaving; losing our OC would coupled with Dooley's hot seat etc cd really hurt recruiting.

Now that Wilcox is gone and we have weathered the asst storm, I think Dooley is in more of a position to get rid of Chaney. Dooley is smart enough to know that it's either him or Chaney moving forward; I think we will have a new OC next year.

If he felt the philosophy/scheme was an issue he should not have retained him when he took the job. I don't see where Chaney has changed in 3 years. I think Dooley bought into his scheme and now that all the pieces are here and it hit the wall against a legit SEC D its a problem.

While his play calling sucked and played a big part in our offense flopping in the second half, his overall scheme has holes in it. Thats the bigger issue. Im just puzzled as to why it took this long to figure that out.

I respectfully disagree.

A good OC would play to the defense's weaknesses in a pinch. Playing to your teams strengths in keys moments makes you incredibly predictable. And for OC's, being predictable is pretty damning.

I actually think that the best way to do it is to blind draw. Sometimes play to your strength; othertimes, play to their weakness. I thought that is what Lane did when calling plays.

I don't remember the exact game, but we lost at the end. We had a crucial 4th and goal against someone...UCLA maybe. Lane ran it straight up the middle. We did not make it. But I loved that call because it was so off the chart unpredictable.

All this talk about horrible offensive play-calling, yadda yadda. If CP and Hutner both catch those passes that they are suppose to catch then the score is tied at 27 in the 4th quarter and its a totally different ball game. That was not play-calling.

I was pretty confident they were ready for that run up the middle since we'd already tried it twice. As a defense, I think you pretty much always expect a run up the middle in a goal line situation. JMO but I thought that was the worst play call of his brief tenure here.

Very true.

3 consistent 3-and-outs on the same play action sideline pass plays over and over is on the play calling.

Holding up the neon sign that says "hey defense, play back because we're not going to try to run anymore" is play calling.

It didn't work so I guess that you are right. But as a DC, the last thing I would have expected was a simple run up the middle.

That or every play in the VA Tech bowl game. Some of the play calling of that game had me convinced he was trying to lose.
