While many still believe that this remains Jones’ offense, Tennessee’s coach certainly ceded some control when he promoted Scott. The OC’s fingerprints are all over the Vols’ new staff now, with connections to quality control assistants to assistant coaches like Canales, Kevin Beard and Walt Wells.

Jones is entrusting that Scott’s hardened background, amiable personality and competitive spirit will take Tennessee’s offense to new heights. After all, a first-time offensive coordinator who’d never called plays has made his mark in Knoxville before. David Cutcliffe, the offensive coordinator for Peyton Manning and the 1998 national title team, was new to the role himself back in 1993.

“He’ll do a great job. He’s so sharp,” Canales said of Scott. “Larry knows what he wants to do and how he wants to do it. And that’s half the battle.”

If Jones starts to share control it would surprise me. Maybe share like the guy a Bama did with his past offensive guy (no name here). But for Jones to go this far seems to me for him to be out of character.
The Cut example is going a long way as a realistic example. I personally think he was the real reason for our success in the 90's and early 2000's. ( I know this leaves me open for much abuse for the Coach Fulmer folks) However, if Coach Jones can back off and be a little more flexible than he seems to be, then we may be in for a great run over the next few years.

Nah, I for one agree with you. I just hate how he did Randy Sanders and allowed him to take that beating!

That is a good read and interesting feature on Scott. It sounds as if he has done a lot of things right in his life.

I really want him to be successful as our OC, and I am confident that he will. And, if he is, he'll be on the HC short list in a year or two.

As for CBJ letting go of some of the details, I think it is possible. He now has enough experience at this level to understand what model works and what doesn't. Sure, he may be stubborn, but he isn't stupid, IMO. I think he wants to win, and he certainly understands that he needs to win if he wants to keep his job. All it takes is to look around at who is having success and the model they are using. The guys that are winning are using the talent of their assistants to its greatest potential.
