A Few Thoughts on Summer Practice

What are Neal's lifting stats? There is no way he is stronger than Jamal Lewis was. I remember when Lewis and Al Wilson had a lift off and were benching well over 500 lbs. Those guys were freaks.

I am with you on that I will believe that when i see it. If that did happened I am surprised I didnt come across that during the summer.
Then again with every passing summer kids workout more and more and wieght training as seen many changes since Jamals days on campus.

I cant remember was johnny long the S&C guy when Jamal was here, I dont think it was.

Don't put a freakin' freshman at KO or punt returner. Why do coaches always want to put a speedy freshman in that role when they are guaranteed to fumble and cost you a game. Don't understand it. The odds are much higher that a freshman will fumble before taking it to the house--much higher.

DY did pretty well last year even though he was a freshman, undersized, and frowned upon by many on here. I say give'em a shot until they prove unworthy of the role.

Has anyone heard how Rajion Neal has been doing with his ball security issues? He has a chance to be a very good back as long as he doesn't lay it on the ground like he was last year. Any news on this issue?

He's been doing alot better. CJG is doing work! :loco:

Sounds good maybe CJG is teaching Rajion the Tiki Barber high and tight. I would love to see Neal have a big year.

I can't wait to see q Watson out there.kids got great footwork and his feet look weightless in drills. I think he's gonna surprise a lot of people

I had season tickets until my divorce, I give to the Tennessee Fund like clockwork, and I graduated from Tennessee. How can I be called negative? I wonder how many posters on here actually support the university financially?

I gave to the Tennessee Fund for 4 1/2 years (Yes, ME, not my parents)...now I give to the 529 for a certain 9 year old future Vol. Although, her mama, who graduated from Vandy, may argue with me about that :)

I agree with all your points... I still don't feel very confident in our depth at LB... Our starters can ball though...

1) I did not expect it, nor do I believe the coaches did either, but I believe that Fugate will be a great back up to Herman. I think many fears due to Lather's durability have been put to rest by the play of Channing. hats off to the kid and to the coaches that initiated the move.

2) Teague seems to have experienced somewhat of a rebirth. I admit that I have always expected big things from him since he flipped to us from UF. Maybe there is a lesson to be learned here about simply never giving up on a player. I think that he is finally coming in to his own and will be a great player at a position of need for us this year.

3) What a great pick up Brain Randolph was by CDD. The kid is a player that was passed over by many schools. We never mention his position because he has just locked it down. How UGA didnt offer is a mystery for Dateline NBC.

4) Very happy to see Moore named the starter. I think his ability is unquestioned and its nice to see him finally step up. He has a tremendous upside.

5) LaDarrell McNeil, Geraldo Orta, Tino Thomas, Deion Bonner, and Daniel Gray are all players. I am more excited about this group in the defensive backfield than I have been in some time.

6) Very encouraged that it seems like Neal is finally going to live up to his potential. The fact that he owns all but one strength and conditioning record for his position in program history and didnt enter this year as the unquestioned #1 rb is criminal imo. I expect great things from him this year. Some of his production this year will be attributed to the upgrade with Pittman as well.

7) Borque leaving sure does sound like addition by subtraction. His dad sounds like another Juicy Locke.

8) Quenshaun Watson will house a couple this year, book it. Let's just hope he doesnt put an equal number on the ground.

9) Good to see Hood up to 306. I know that LK took a tremendous amount of grief as did the program as a whole, but Im glad he received another chance. I think he will contribute this year significantly depth wise.

10) The future is bright my friends, especially if we can catch a few breaks this year.

The Only thing I would add to this: coaching upgrades. CSS has an energy about him like many of the GREAT defensive coaches in the game. He has an old school demeanor that heats up the team chemistry and energy level...

I also believe that CJG is the missing link we needed to get our running game paying more attention to details. Running hard, blasting the holes, breaking tackles, making defenders pay in the open field, holdin onto the football, footwork, stiff arms, etc...

Here's to hoping our coaching staff sustains stability within themselves and in the program...we really seem to be on the right track because the small details are getting much more attention.

I can't wait til next Friday!!!!

GBO!!!!

Stuckey was the S&C coach in the 90s before he became ill. I still think he was the best we ever had, but the current S&C coach seems to be doing a great job and may surpass Stuckey..

I'm not quite as pessimistic as you, but I do have concerns about LB. It just sounds to me like the first time Lathers tries to go "all out" in a practice or game he will re-aggravate one of his injuries and be shelved for the year. Not a knock on him...I really feel bad for his situation. But it just doesn't sound like he's going to be able to make it very deep into the year. Hope I'm wrong. Thoughts?

Maybe they should rest him in non-conference games and play him only against top 25 foes. This way he is healthy when it really counts.

Neal holds all the records but one.

my point was that he has the ability, but not the production and that is criminal.

With all due respect, I watched those running plays last year. Except for Buffalo, Marcus Allen or Eric Dickerson could not have gained 1,000 with those "holes". Raijon could have done little even were he in this years version.

2012 looks to be a different year entirely. RN and our OL are about to burst onto the scene IMO. Still excited about Lane and Young too.

"Why not run it every time?!?"

Rex, your bit on Randolph is spot on and the "mystery for Dateline NBC" made me lol. Rex, you probably suffer from some of the same misconceptions that I do from VN. Once the negavol label is on you, its hars to shake, especially when posters just ignore or dismiss your positive posts because its just easier to play up the nega label for them. Jmo.

^negavol imo. Go find a new team etc.

Yeah at the time, I don't know if there was a better S&C coach in the business. Although I have to say, we looked mighty weak against Nebraska in 97. They pushed us all over the field.

That's just my point. You see how 460 lbs turned into "well over 500"? Kinda males you question the 460 claim a lil bit unless you were there to see it.

There was someone a few days ago who said they were watching a replay of a game from the 90's where the announcers were talking about how there was a lifting competition going between Lewis and Walker and the coaches shut them down at 460. Doesn't make it gospel but I'm assuming that's where the 460 is being quoted from.

This is true.

I like Dooley. I want him to succeed very badly. That's the best thing for the UT football program. I just don't believe it's going to happen.

didn't know that about Neal and the strength records, wow!

Side note: wonder which one is the one he doesn't have....slacker...

I do believe we're in for a treat. A raging Raijon running like a mid-sized version of Trent Richard at the line and a Demps-Rainey hybrid in open space.
