I haven’t been doing the postgame reports, probably won’t on any sort of regular basis, maybe some thoughts here and there but been too busy to consistently get those done. Figured with the OOC ending and a few days before we start conference play I would give some general thoughts, opinions, predictions etc…

1. In large part we’re exactly where expected/projected preseason, feels a bit disappointing given the start to Vegas before losing 3 in a row, but we’re 14th on both KP & Barttorvik which is where we were preseason iirc, and 10-3 is also what we were projected to go OOC. Again, it feels like a disappointment due to how it started, but big picture it pretty much was as expected.

2. So what are we if that was what was expected? I’m not sure anyone knows, I think this team is the furthest away from its potential ceiling and from Barnes figuring things out than any team he’s had here. Now maybe he never does with this team, no way to know, but we’ve never seen him still tinkering with lineup as the calendar changes to a new year the way he still is with this squad. Again not necessarily a bad thing, you want to be playing your best in March, not November, so there is time.

3. I mentioned it at the time, but I think Cade Phillips injury could turn out to be a silver lining for this team…he doesn’t fit great with the other pieces that are going to play, and given the need for offensive production he’s not a guy that can really go get his like Carey & Estrella, so both getting more minutes was paramount and now happening with him out.

4. The 2 spot was the question preseason and still is a question, Boswell appears your best option there, but would love to see a little more aggression there. He’s shooting very well from 3 and it looks good, but he’s also shown a great ability to finish at the rim, something we didn’t know he had in his bag, would love to see him continue to uptick the offensive aggression. Behind him, Abram has his moments as do Burg and Henderson, you can’t really keep playing them all so again someone separating themselves would be something I’m sure Barnes would like to see.

5. The recent emergence of Amari Evans clouds the whole rotation a bit, he gives Barnes another option and can play some 4 with his size also if that’s something they want to do. He missed a lot of time this off season so it’s great seeing him finding footing and developing, whether it’s this year or in the future he’s showing some nice flashes. We’re so deep in the post you don’t feel a need to go small, but if you do him at the 4 with Ament at the 3 or even Boswell at the 3 could be some fun options against smaller teams wanting to spread you out.

6. Speaking of the bigs, I love the 4 we’ve got and would put our frontline up against any in the country from a 4 deep standpoint. With that said, idk if Barnes will do it but would love to see Carey plugged into the starting spot, thus taking a few minutes away from Brown. By starting Brown each half you’re essentially giving him 8-10mpg guaranteed just from a first TO standpoint, you could make a change prior, but most of the time those starters are going til first media timeout. I would like to see the 80 minutes at the 4/5 split more like 30/25/25 between Okpara, Estrella & Carey…now I know that those last 2 have needed to improve conditioning and JP has worked back from injury so no reason to this point to rush it, but those 2 guys are so good offensively and efficient it brings a whole different look to this team, they’re also your 2 best rebounders. I love Brown and much like Evans love his future, but ideally he’s our 4th option and a 5-8mpg off the bench imo.

7. Gillespie has been really good, I don’t feel like it’s been discussed as much as it should or maybe taken for granted to an extent, but he’s playing really well and seems to be getting better and better with each game understanding what Barnes wants from him and how to run this team and be a leader. He’s right there with what Clayton was doing last year at Florida, even better from an assists standpoint, great to see from the hometown kid.

8. Obviously have to talk about Ament…imo he’s been about what should’ve been expected overall if you were fair, he’s putting up over 15ppg, that’s exactly where the number was most set preseason for a recruit like him. If you extrapolate his numbers to 30mpg he’s right at 18ppg, which I expect his minutes to increase as conference play starts. He’s obviously not shot great, he’s struggled at times, but he also defends really well, rebounds it well, and is an underrated passer…Barnes loves him as Ament does things the right way every day, they knew he wasn’t a finished product and that getting a better him in March was the goal, we will continue to probably ride a roller coaster with him, but you hope to continue to see a trend upwards from a consistency standpoint.

9. Free throws and turnovers have got to be a continued focus for this team and staff, the turnovers seem to be trending right as we’ve been 12 or less 4 games in a row, that’s a reasonable number although you’d prefer it to be a touch less. The free throws though continue to be an issue, we’re now under 70% on the year, which ranks 241st on the year, that is awful. Both of those areas can directly improve our offense, we lead the nation in offensive rebounding %, we rebound half of our missed shots, that is insane, but that’s why those stats are so important as well. When we don’t turn the ball over we typically either make a shot, miss a shot and get our own rebound, or we get fouled…right now we’re costing ourselves points at the line each night out. In our 3 losses we combined to shoot 33/55 from the FT line, that’s 60%, that’s also 22 missed points (more when you add in 1 and 1s), and you lost those 3 games by a total of 20 points, now I don’t expect us to shoot 100% but you cost yourself a chance to have 2-3 more wins as of today because of our horrid FT shooting. Carey, Estrella, Okpara & Boswell are the main culprits as of today that really need to improve.

10. So we sit 10-3, we’re projected 22-9(12-6), never know but that’s likely 3/4 seed territory in the NCAAT which again is about what was expected preseason. Looking at the start to SEC play the first half is definitely tougher than the back half, at least how it looks as of today with how teams are projected to finish. 3 of our top 4 toughest projected games come within the first 6 games of SEC play, starting 3-3 would probably be seen as a win big picture wise. If you split the SEC 18 games in 2 going 6-3/6-3 would get you to that 12-6, the first half definitely appears tougher though, so if you can indeed manage to go 6-3 over the first 9 that would certainly be considered a win imo.

Looking forward to watching this season play out, again it feels like we have so many unknowns and toys to play with, watching Barnes try and figure the best way to assemble pieces has been fun, here’s to hoping he finds the right combo.

Appreciate the thoughts, BTO. Certainly been a fun but weird start to the year. Continue to think more people would be higher on this team if not for the inexcusable slip up against Syracuse. 11-2 certainly feels a lot different than 10-3 when you consider our wins against UH and UL.

Still, I’m excited to see how the SEC season goes. Really wish we had a slightly easier first game than on the road at Arkansas. I would feel much better going into Bud Walton in February than early January with all the growth this team still has to do. If we somehow manage to win that first game, I think it bodes well for the year. Definitely not a must win though.

I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I wonder if our greater use of the frontcourt to create offense, thus getting them fouled, is making our FT% a little lower. Carey gets to the line a lot and he's shaky, to say the least.

Otherwise, I agree with the sentiment we need Ament to turn a page by March to be a real threat.

As I mentioned Carey, Okpara and Estrella are the main culprits, so yes it is related…but that can’t be the case, Grant Williams usage as a post was through the roof and he was a good FT shooter. I’m not suggesting 90% from those guys, but 75%+ is fair

Okpara is going to be about a 65% shooter, most likely. He's a big, lanky 7ish-footer and that's just how it is for most of them not named Durant or Nowitzki. Carey can't shoot 48%, though. I think he can, and should, hit your mark of 75%.

No need to say this, but I will anyway. You are dead on target as usual. My personal opinion and hope is that this team will grow. You addressed the glaring errors which are fixable (FT, TO, Growth, Lineup). IMHO, I have full faith in Coach Rick Barnes to fine tune and tweak all of these areas. He is a player's coach that can adjust. I would not be surprised to see throughout the season starting lineup adjustments for opposing teams. Those that make good fits and then adjust the lineup by subbing to fix the in game play. Tweaks that fit. Phillips injury is a silver lining, solid player but I guess a Medical RS will help for the future if eligible.

I too like Cade and he’s a great kid but felt we would be better. He’s not a threat on offense and not the passer Carey and Brown are.

We have had so many guys playing that it doesn't feel like we have a team, but just a collection of good players. Hopefully, with Gillespie's steady hand, we can now getting down to business as a real team. If so, our depth can hopefully put us over the top, and we can pick and choose playing time based on matchups and who has the hot hand.

Our level of depth is something I'm not sure we have had in my lifetime. So, I'm struggling to decide how big of an advantage it is going to be. It will also be interesting to see how the freshmen backups figure into our success (or not) as the year goes on. All of them seem to be capable of playing at least a small role.

This team didn’t start shooting free throws poorly until the Syracuse game, then it just snow-balled. We hit 31-35 against Tennessee State and 23-29 against Houston along with other games that were okay to good. This team can shoot free throws well. They’ve proven that, and that’s why the mental side to basketball is so tough. This is a very different situation than a team which just has several players who are bad free throw shooters. None of these guys are bad, and I think this team will shoot free throws pretty decently the rest of the way.

As much as I hate saying it, this was my exact thought when Cade was shut down. I love the kid, he embodies everything good about what Barnes has built here, but the other four bigs all offer different flavors of offensive upside, while with Cade it is pretty much just alley oops off of P&R.

I think the biggest change this year might be the size of the rotation, as Rick appears to be expanding beyond his normal 7-8 to possibly 9-10 players getting time. Finding an offensive identity playing this many guys will be difficult and a work in progress, but defensively having waves of solid defenders and bigs to play the kind of 94-foot pressing defense we have shown for 40 minutes would be lethal.

I can't wait to see this group grow through the league schedule.

I thought this was a final 4 team preseason. After the non-conference run I see them as .500 SEC team with a high seed, if any. There is no 2nd guard that is scoring consistently and generally the guards we have can't play defense. Barnes is forced to switch on almost every pick creating mismatches, exactly what SEC coaches are tying to achieve. We are doing on the job training with Ament which is going to cost us games until he is hopefully ready by the 2nd half of the season. They can't seem to get the ball inside to our strength, playing inside out, and that will only get tougher starting today.
To be 12-6 in the SEC they will need to get the ball inside and score a high percentage or pass outside for the wide open 3 which we also must hit a high percentage. Free throws can be improved. If Ament had been a force to be concerned with for defenses its a must different prediction.

Seems a little dramatic to say this team is a 0.500 SEC team. We have two Top 15 wins already. Not many 0.500 teams are doing that and this is not the historic SEC of last year. I think 11-7 is the floor for this team and feel pretty good that we finish right at 12-6.

Losing this game isn’t a big deal, but continuing to do the same thing and expect a different result (FT & TO), is the literal definition of insanity SMH
Yup. I don’t know whether to feel better because FTs are the only thing that’s standing between this team from being a 1 seed hunter and where we are now or if I should feel worse because it’s obvious this team is mental midgets, as evidenced by the poor FT shooting and TOs. Just a maddening team to watch at this point.

What a waste of a 7-7 FG performance by Amari Evans. Won’t get a game like that from him the rest of the year and we squandered it.

Disappointing loss, but not a surprising one. I’m less concerned with the result than I am with HOW the result happened. Racked up 4 losses already and done so on the backs of being very undisciplined and lacking the fundamentals we’re used to in a Barnes’ team.

Free throws and turnovers. Basic stuff we can’t get right.

Mostly I’m disappointed that this team has had to be as reliant on Brown and Evans as we have been because of some poor evaluations by the staff. Burg and Abrams are mostly a waste of space, and because of that we’re asking a lot of Evans (who has really been a huge surprise). I can’t be too hard on Brown, because he’s young and he’s only playing as much as he has because his experienced peers aren’t performing, but that just felt like a game that was too big for him. Still don’t love him starting, but when you get that type of performance from Carey it’s not surprising why.

Gillespie and Okpara have also just been huge disappointments. With Okpara, I thought we’d see another step from him this year, and it just hasn’t materialized. Missed layups (where he should have dunked) and a step back on defense it feels like. 3 points from him is not going to cut it. And Gillespie….he’s been a sieve on defense and hasn’t offset it with lighting up the scoreboard. He can’t be 5-15 from the field if he’s not assisting on more buckets. Ament obviously is struggling a lot, but I would think he’d get some easier buckets if Gillespie was more of a threat to score at a high level, which he hasn’t been.

Still very early in the year, and that’s a road game against one of the best teams in the conference, but we have a lot of issues to correct and really need to see someone step up and become an alpha on offense or we aren’t making any noise in March. Moving forward, would like to see more minutes from Evans, fewer from Abrams, very few from Burg, and swap Brown and Estrella in the lineup.

I lean this way too, mostly because we’ve seen some early season stinkers in past seasons where we’ve ended playing very well (as has every team). This wasn’t a game I expected to win, but we played well enough to have the ball up 5 with about 10 minutes to play and just couldn’t finish it.

Definitely frustrating to see the same issues plague every game, but we’ve seen this team play at a championship level before this season, even if just for a game at a time. They are capable, they just need to find some consistency. I won’t act like I’m supremely confident that they will, but I certainly believe they can. Lot of season left and the SEC is down this year - there will be plenty of chances to find it at the right time.

I just have a hard time b’tching too much about roster construction, 2 guard fit etc when you’re a good FT shooting team away from being a favorite for a 1 seed. That’s bigger picture, even just today good FT shooting and taking care of the ball and you’re pushing up against 90.

I know everyone is disappointed, but if JG shoots his normal percentages and Ament makes his 6 missed free throws then we probably win. We dropped a couple of those OOC games where JG and Ament were terribly inefficient much like they were today so that’s something to track as the season progresses.

A positive stat was JP and Evan’s both shot 100% on their attempts. Seems like that would merit more minutes?
