A Few Things About LV's First Game

My comments were inquisitive in nature. Calm down. Please.

I was just about to say... relax... LOL not everyone is trying to crucify Holly, just two guys having a chat about the game.

The funny part is when people aren't mentioning Holly someone who supports her has to bring her up just to show how much they support her LOL. I get it you love her just as much as I get the people who want her gone. Even still though chill out. Nobody is running around with a pitchfork in this thread... yet!

If it's gonna happen let is happen naturally. LVJeff and I were just shooting the breeze.

That is kind of what I was looking for. That was really disappointing to not see how they reacted to a zone. I am going to re-watch the game now because i briefly recall a sagging man in the second quarter.

Also, last year I would see Mercedes defending on the perimeter and would think she was out of position and in most instances she would be (but you aren't if the coaching staff tells you to play there). After seeing them play last night they are definitely being taught to defend that way. Nunn was guarding the perimeter and Middleton was in the paint. I am eager to see if they stay that way vs Baylor.

At the beginning of last season the LV'S would switch and stay that way...there was no switching back. Mercedes would be stuck for 30 seconds on the perimeter and a guard would be stuck defending a post player for the entire possession. They got better at switching back later in the season - you could see them switch and then immediately start to communicate, point, whatever as they tried to switch back.

We'll see what happens against better teams as this season progresses.

Really impressed with Nared's play. If she continues to drive to the basket with such confidence, in control, and effectively using a change of pace (as she did last night), she should spend a lot of time at the free throw line - which is great, considering she was one of our better (best?) shooters there last year. Her jumpers also looked smooth and improved.

DeShields (and her teammates for that matter) seems to recognize and believe in her abilities to simply take over stretches of play and I hope we'll see a lot more of that this year.

Hard to gauge much on post play from this game. Agree with others that I'd like to see Russell impose her will a bit more but found it encouraging to see her score through contact several times. Harris has a ways to go but my initial impression is that she has a higher ceiling than Nia Moore just given her build and length.

Neither player got a ton of minutes but Nunn clearly looked to me to be ready to contribute. She was strong on the boards and looked as if she felt comfortable on the court. Harris fouled too much and seemed to be uncomfortable.
Harris never touched the girl on the first foul they called on her.

do you really think she can tell them how to run there team , ppl stop reaching please

Actually, yes. This is something that Pat would do rather regularly. Not saying that it happens with every exhibition game, but it is not really unusual for a coach to request that a team brought in for what is, essentially, practice, present their team with a particular offensive or defensive scheme.

First off it makes no logic to go play man and not zone. Again reaching . and this is not the old days they don't have to come to lady vols to play for exposure

Evidence that they have progressed at all from last year can't be decided until at least five games into the season.

Five games in still won't tell you anything. The first six games are against cupcakes. Games 7 and 8 are against Baylor and Texas. After those two games the team will know where they stand.

"Cupcake" is a bit strong. Many of these teams made the NCAA tournament last year and should compete to get in again this year.

Being one of the sixty-four teams to receive a bid does not mean a team is any good or even competitive. Many teams that were invited got their butts handed to them in the tournament. Every year in WCBB there is only a small handful of teams that have a realistic shot at winning it all. The rest are just going through the motions. Watching these other teams play can be painful on the eyes, to put it mildly.

Not quite sure how you consider my comment "reaching". I did not say that Holly made a specific request of the Carson-Newman coach, I simply said that it would not be unusual for such a request to be made. I know Pat did this on occasion.

They played zone.,, It was cleverly disguised as "man"...I had this very same conversation with a fan from CN. She too was wondering why CN continuously stayed with a defense that gave them a disadvantage. Of course if CN had kept it close or won, it would have been seen as genius.

Also, last year I would see Mercedes defending on the perimeter and would think she was out of position and in most instances she would be (but you aren't if the coaching staff tells you to play there). Nunn is cut from the same cord that Diamond is. You better be able to read what she needs, on command, or you lose them....

I am more than good with A\M in the paint and Shaqui at the arc. You never know when you are going to get caught in a switch, This gets them ready for it.

Funny, because I think the same of Middleton. She has a lot of talent if she could learn to harness it. But the way she runs a hundred miles an hour into the lane makes me cringe.

I have worked out with her. She works out with the same fervor and pace. . . . I wouldn't want to limit a player's propensity to attack the rim. What needs to be done is to make it more efficient and with proper technique... Tony Parker is an undersized and is slower than most PG's,,,But he knows how to bounce off the big bodies and fall without incident or injury. It's not rocket science,,, Teach A\M how to use the big bodies as a pivoting mecganism in flight and she lands on her butt instead of on her hands. And then, give her the license to drive.

Uh huh!

There are automatic bids in the 64 field. About 25-30 of them. Pepper in the top 25 and you usually have about 10-12 places left for non automatic bids.

No matter how you DO get into that field, you are one of 349 teams to start and one of 64 to play when everybody else's season is over. I will take being in the top 18%

He is actually a really good example. I recall an interview with Moriah Jefferson where she said the summer between her freshman and sophomore year the UConn staff made her watch hours and hours of video of Tony Parker so that she could try and model her entries into the lane after him.

do you really think she can tell them how to run there team , ppl stop reaching please and switching is part of a game plan as well. esp when a team only shoot three if we did not switch they would be open from the three point line. and to refresh your memory. we switched on stanford when we played them at home and we won 59-40. ppl trying so hard to find something wrong with holly but to be honest I don't think half of you could get the lady vols to an 15-15 record.

I agree team defense must be based upon the opposing team's DNA. If they are three point shooters you have to guard the three point line. I would rather see the guards and wings taking care of the outside shot and Russell taking care of the paint. However, if you remember, sometimes Genno used Stowie to guard the three point shooters. As long as it works go with it. 15-15 record, do you think half of us could overcome the stress of coaching and do that well? We are very opinionated, however, put us in charge and reality would sets in. :eek:lol:

And sometimes coaching do this to force their team, to improve their confidence just in case they are caught on the perimeter, and this force the players to communicate on defense and some of the 4 and 5 around the country are athletic so Nunn and Cedes might find themselves outside the paint.

Good and Great defenses is all about talking... communicating.

Relax... not everything is a red flag.
