He broke the team down and demanded perfect execution. He ran off some prima donnas. By the time his first team took the field... they were convinced they couldn't lose.

He broke that streak in his 2nd year and won about 75% of his meetings with them. Oh, their coach at the time was the all time winningest coach in NC HSFB history.

We played that way for all of my 3 years. I started playing varsity in his 3rd year. We were playing a class above what our enrollment says we should have but won a state title and lost a total of 5 games in 3 years. Four of those 5 losses came to teams that won state championships in the same season... to include a 7-6 loss in the state semi's my Sr year against a team that won the championship game by about 40.

He was always criticizing and correcting... but somehow he always said the right things to make us believe we were going to win every game. No excuses about not being fast enough... big enough... athletic enough. We almost never had an advantage in talent. But we believed.


The confidence a coach has and demonstrates in his team goes a long way toward determining the confidence they play with....

That's very cool. Those rare people who can elevate those around them, are fascinating. You would think all coaches would have that ability. Obviously, they do not. Sometimes, certain players have that quality. It's a gift for those who have it.

In any team or group, you will have a range of opinions... just like this board. There will be guys like these. There will be others that are more skeptical.

Medley has gotten Jones' trust even though he has a good back up and has not kicked well. Jones has shown him loyalty. Hardly surprising he would say that.

Kirkland is starting as a Fr at MLB. Jones has shown him trust and confidence.

When I start seeing UT's 4/5* WR's tweeting supportive comments... the guys who Jones apparently DOES NOT TRUST to win games for UT... then I'll be more impressed. But the way their collective talents are being wasted, I'm not looking for it.

Right now, its thr middle of the season and all HECK has broke loose with the media and VN turning their backs and several literally giving up. I'm not worried about the players who may or may not sign. I'm not worried about the staff.

Right now I only care that this team comes out on fire against Arkansas likr they playing for the NCG. I hope they dont feel like total losers because of several VN total losers calling shows saying they're starting a buy out Butch fund...

This makes me ill. I love these kids and how UT isn't ThugU (Kiffin) ir Quit High (Dooley) these youngg men are awesome and I'm hoping they reel off some big wins!!!

It isn't a new problem. He lost vs a terrible UF team in year one by coaching not to lose... and Vandy the same year. Last year he lost to UF and Mizzou again last year while playing not to lose. The USCe win is thought of as a great game... but again his coaching not to lose made those heroics necessary. The same passing game USCe couldn't stop at the end... wouldn't have been stopped in the previous 3.75 qtrs if he had given them a chance.

Booger nailed it. When Jones goes conservative then he demonstrates a lack of trust in the players and assistants. They respond by playing tight and making critical mistakes. They "feel" the lack of confidence shown when you run the ball into 8 men in the box on 2nd 8 and needing a drive to win the game.

When he becomes even moderately aggressive in the 4th qtr... this will change. Until then, the most favorable position an opponent can be in vs a Jones coached UT team is down by 2 scores to start the 4th qtr. They can take whatever risks they want because all Jones is going to do is run it into the middle of the line and punt it back to them.

BS..... The players HAD NOT won the game. They had the game won and then the defense went into the fetal position. The players are not without blame as they missed enough tackles to lose two games. There is plenty of blame to go around and the players are smart enough to know it wasn't all on the coaches. Only guys like you believe the crap you're shoveling

Fulmer is living proof that having enough talent on the field can overcome poor in-game coaching.

Next year could be reminiscent of those days.

No matter how I feel towards butch, I do want our players behind him. Once a coach loses that, things get much worse.

Marcus Stroud said today that the players are doubting Butch, but that they wouldn't ever say that publicly because they would be crucified for it.

He said if he were a player he would think the same thing, but he would back the coach publicly because he was smart.

Don't get this OL bash still going on! They pretty much had their way with a very good Gator front 7. That 4th quarter drive to go up 13 was a thing of beauty. This group is getting better every week. Just wish the in game coaching was.

Well hopefully they are still behind him. Ask Dooley what happens when the players bail on you ala 2012 Vandy game.

BUNCH OF WHINERS ON HERE!!! Most including me was upset after the game but quit acting like the season is over and we need to clean house tomorrow. Some are going overboard with the negativity but I know that isn't going to change. This team isn't done whether a lot of you believe it or not. I'm archieving this dang thread till the end of the season. GO BIG ORANGE!!!!!
