Look here I've let it go lost money a lot of money on this game but one thing I can say is to TEAM 119 you guys are destined for greatness and taking losses like this makes a team bond stronger and makes them play harder when it comes to crunch time I know the feeling from my football year's of playing we went from a 2-10 team to a 11-1 team the next yr what I'm saying is dont let this defined your season we still got 8 games ahead of us it can either make you or break u and wit that being said "FROM ROCKBOTTOM TO ROCKYTOP VOLNATION THE HATE MUST STOP THE KIDS WE HAVE GAVE IT ALL THEY GOT. WE ALL BLEED ORANGE AT THE END OF THE DAY BUTCH JONES WILL LEAD THE WAY. WE STILL HAVE STATEMENT GAMES COMING OUR WAY PREPARE VOLNATION THE STORM CLOUDS WILL BE LEAVING N-E DAY"

When the HS coach I played for years ago arrived, we hadn't beaten our main rival (same school Jimmy Streater played for) for years. More than 10 I'm sure. They thought of us much like UF thinks of UT... a rival... but not really. More like a pet you tease a little each year before taking the bone away.
We had about half the enrollment of the other schools in our conference and hadn't won the conference in about 25 years.
He broke the team down and demanded perfect execution. He ran off some prima donnas. By the time his first team took the field... they were convinced they couldn't lose.
He broke that streak in his 2nd year and won about 75% of his meetings with them. Oh, their coach at the time was the all time winningest coach in NC HSFB history.
We played that way for all of my 3 years. I started playing varsity in his 3rd year. We were playing a class above what our enrollment says we should have but won a state title and lost a total of 5 games in 3 years. Four of those 5 losses came to teams that won state championships in the same season... to include a 7-6 loss in the state semi's my Sr year against a team that won the championship game by about 40.
He was always criticizing and correcting... but somehow he always said the right things to make us believe we were going to win every game. No excuses about not being fast enough... big enough... athletic enough. We almost never had an advantage in talent. But we believed.
The confidence a coach has and demonstrates in his team goes a long way toward determining the confidence they play with....
Yeah... its the wimps that recognize a problem and criticize it rather than trying to pretend it doesn't exist.
In any team or group, you will have a range of opinions... just like this board. There will be guys like these. There will be others that are more skeptical.
Medley has gotten Jones' trust even though he has a good back up and has not kicked well. Jones has shown him loyalty. Hardly surprising he would say that.
Kirkland is starting as a Fr at MLB. Jones has shown him trust and confidence.
When I start seeing UT's 4/5* WR's tweeting supportive comments... the guys who Jones apparently DOES NOT TRUST to win games for UT... then I'll be more impressed. But the way their collective talents are being wasted, I'm not looking for it.
Right now, its thr middle of the season and all HECK has broke loose with the media and VN turning their backs and several literally giving up. I'm not worried about the players who may or may not sign. I'm not worried about the staff. If Butch continues to blow games just like this one, recruits will start taking notice and will start jumping off the ship sooner than you think.
I haven't given up on the team or season. But "this" coach MUST change... and do it right away. He can't keep blowing leads by coaching not to lose. He has a general problem of overestimating opponents going into games and underestimating them at the start of the 4th qtr.
This would have accurately expressed my thoughts following OU... then he didn't change and it cost UT another game.
It isn't a new problem. He lost vs a terrible UF team in year one by coaching not to lose... and Vandy the same year. Last year he lost to UF and Mizzou again last year while playing not to lose. The USCe win is thought of as a great game... but again his coaching not to lose made those heroics necessary. The same passing game USCe couldn't stop at the end... wouldn't have been stopped in the previous 3.75 qtrs if he had given them a chance.
Yes. Unfortunately they do. And they watched the game too. And unlike you with your VAST and SUPERIOR football knowledge... they saw a coach lose a game that the players and assistants had won. They saw WR talent unused in a game that should have been blown wide open. They saw an OL that still seems to struggle with "the system" after two or 3 years learning it. Hint: If they can't learn and execute it in 2 years then it AIN'T the players.
They watched botched game management and highly questionable play calling at various points.
Booger nailed it. When Jones goes conservative then he demonstrates a lack of trust in the players and assistants. They respond by playing tight and making critical mistakes. They "feel" the lack of confidence shown when you run the ball into 8 men in the box on 2nd 8 and needing a drive to win the game.
When he becomes even moderately aggressive in the 4th qtr... this will change. Until then, the most favorable position an opponent can be in vs a Jones coached UT team is down by 2 scores to start the 4th qtr. They can take whatever risks they want because all Jones is going to do is run it into the middle of the line and punt it back to them.
Not sure why expectations were set so high. We all knew the Oline was a risk along with middle linebacker. Any time you see a depth chart full of freshman and sophomores you can expect to win big games.
